Primary 6 Blog Post

Welcome back to my favourite term – the Winter and Christmas term. We have lots of exciting things coming up in P6. It is going to be a busy one! I am also looking forward to meeting parents and carers at the Parents Evenings in November.

Below is an overview of the learning and teaching taking place in P6 this term.

 Literacy

Reading

This term our focus is on non-fiction texts. P6 will study non-fiction texts appropriate to their level. They will complete daily reading to writing tasks and work on active comprehension tasks both independently and as a group. Focus comprehension strategies this term are finding the main idea of a text and summarising. All pupils will complete a non-fiction reading assessment at the end of the block of lessons.

As we move into December, we will be using a Christmas movie as stimuli for our reading lessons. P6 will have the opportunity to work in ‘Literacy Circles’ to analyse the film in groups.

 Writing

At the beginning of this term, P6 will complete their block of lessons on Response Writing by writing a film response on a film of their choice – school appropriate of course! We will then move on to Report Writing, in particular focussing on writing a Newspaper Report. In December, the pupils will have the opportunity to work in pairs or trios to write and illustrate a children’s Christmas story which they will then read to our infant pupils. This has proven popular with previous P6 classes.

 Spelling

The spelling groups will continue to experience the Active Literacy spelling program, this will introduce familiar words and focus on phonemes pertinent to their level and stage. The pupils will revise the Active Spelling strategies throughout Term 1, these include diacritical marking, syllabification, and words within words.  Some weeks pupils will be given topic-specific vocabulary as part of their topic.

 Numeracy

This term P6 will focus on the four operations – Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Subtraction. This will also include decimals for some groups. Our Beyond Number topics are Money and Finance and 2D and 3D Shape. P6 are encouraged to practice multiplication tables using Sumdog and Topmarks games.

 Health and Wellbeing

The focus this term is Emergencies and Accidents. P6 will learn what to do in different types of emergency situations which ties in with our Natural Disasters topic.

Our PE days are Monday and Wednesday. Pupils are asked to bring FULL PE kit on these days. If pupils are without PE kit the school will be able to provide pupils with required items of clothing. The focus in PE this term is Social Dancing in preparation for the Day of Dance at The Grand Hall, Football and Gymnastics.

 Expressive Arts

P6 are currently learning traditional Scottish dances for the Day of Dance event in November. Despite inital reservations, I am glad to report that they all are enjoying learning the dances and are giving 100% effort. P6 will have the opportunity to create pieces of artwork over the winter and festive season and create craft items for the school Christmas Fayre. We will also be learning and performing a song at the Christmas concerts.

 RME

Throughout Primary 6 the pupils will listen to and engage with stories from the Gospel of Matthew. This term P6 will also reflect on the Saints who shaped our Faith and look in depth at the Nativity story. P6 have also started out on their Pope Francis Faith Award journey and will continue to work on this throughout the school year.

 Modern Languages

P6 receive weekly French lessons from Mrs MacKinnon. This term pupils will learn basic greetings, colours, numbers, and basic commands.

 Homework

Homework this term will include Spelling, Reading, Mental Maths, and one other curricular area (RME, topic, etc). Homework is issued on a Monday and is due back on a Friday. I appreciate and wholeheartedly support wider achievement outside of school. If there are any reasons why pupils cannot complete the homework, due to activities out with school please contact the school.

In Primary 6 we promote hard work and amazing attitudes. Our reward card system allows pupils to gain reward cards for Wonderful Work, Amazing Attitude, and being a ‘Superstar.’ When the pupils gain five cards, they can choose an individual reward. They can also choose to go for a class reward once everyone reaches five reward cards; this promotes teamwork within the class.

If you have any queries or questions, please contact the school directly.

Thank you for all your support.

Primary 6 Term 1 Blog Post

I hope everyone had a lovely summer and enjoyed the fabulous weather. It’s lovely to have returned from my maternity leave to such a lovely class. P6 are settling into their new classroom well and are making progress learning the new routines.

Below is an overview of the learning and teaching taking place in P6 this term.

Literacy

Reading

Our class novel and topic this term is Wonder. The pupils will complete Active Reading tasks related to this novel. In Primary 6 most pupils will be expected to quote from the text when answering comprehension questions. This will be modelled by the teacher. Most pupils will complete daily reading to writing tasks associated with the novel. This novel has links to other areas of the curriculum such as Expressive Arts and Health and Wellbeing. We have already begun reading it together and the children are enjoying the humour and the message it delivers – Choose Kind.

Writing

Our writing day will be a Wednesday. The pupils will have the opportunity to discuss and plan their writing the day before. This term Primary 6 will be focussing on Descriptive writing. The pupils will use the Active Literacy description bubble template to structure their writing. Later in the term, we will focus on Report Writing. Primary 6 will focus on a different aspect of grammar/punctuation each week with the expectation they use this in their formal writing. Some pupils will be expected to up-level their writing by using tools such as thesauri and the VCOP pyramid.

Spelling

The spelling groups will continue to experience the Active Literacy spelling program, this will introduce common words and focus on phonemes pertinent to their level and stage. The pupils will revise the Active Spelling strategies throughout Term 1, these include diacritical marking, syllabification, and words within words.

 Numeracy

This term P6 will focus on Place Value (whole number and decimals), Rounding and Estimation, and Addition and Subtraction. Our Beyond Number topic this term is Time. The pupils will experience activities at their stage and level. The revision of multiplication tables will be encouraged across all groups. Sumdog and Topmarks games can help with the rigor of times tables at home. Pupils will complete their first personal research project on either a famous mathematician or maths in the world of work.

Health and Wellbeing

The focus of this term is Friendships and Relationships, Changing relationships, and Self-esteem. These are core themes in the novel Wonder. These themes also tie in nicely with our PATHS lessons. P6 complete two PATHS lessons a week. Our ‘Pupil of the Day’ is up and running. This year we are complementing each other based on each other’s skills and talents.

Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday. Pupils are asked to bring a FULL PE kit on these days. If pupils are without a PE kit the school will be able to provide pupils with the required items of clothing.  The focus in PE this term is Badminton and Hockey.

Expressive Arts

Through our class novel, P6 will have the opportunity to experience activities in Drama and Art activities pertinent to their level and stage.

RME

Throughout Primary 6 the pupils will listen to and engage with stories from the Gospel of Matthew. This term P6 will also reflect on their own gifts and talents and discuss and learn about inspirational people who use their gifts to enhance the world.

Modern Languages

Homework

Homework has restarted this term with a focus on Spelling and Reading only. Pupils will receive Numeracy homework later in the term. Homework is due back on a Friday. Maths Week in Primary 6

This week Primary 6 have taken part in lots of activities to celebrate all things maths. P6 were entered into the national Sumdog challenge for Maths Week Scotland.

We started out the week by discussing when and where we use Maths outside of the classroom. The pupils came up with great ideas of where they use maths in their everyday lives.

Then P6 started their new angles topic and enjoyed learning about, and drawing, different types of angles outdoors.

Finally, P6 had a mini-lesson on co-ordinates and played co-ordinates football as a class.

Primary 6 enjoyed taking part in all the different activities 🙂

Primary 6 – Term 1

Welcome back. I hope everyone had a lovely summer and enjoyed the fabulous weather. It’s great to have Primary 6 back. They have all settled into their new classroom and have been brilliant remembering all the routines around the school.

Firstly, I would like to introduce myself; my name is Miss McKenna, and I am thrilled to be joining the Mount Carmel team. I am from Glasgow and some of my interests include travelling, hiking, and going long walks with my dog Alfie. I have lived and taught in Spain previously and I am looking forward to this new chapter teaching at Mount Carmel and getting to know you all over the coming year.

A huge Thank You!

Firstly thank you for the very generous gift I received today. I was overwhelmed and I promise I’ll treat myself and not just Baby T.

Tomorrow is the last day of Primary 6 and I think we’re all in the mood for a party, so that’s exactly what we’re going to do!

I’ve had a wonderful year in Primary 6. You have all worked hard and have been excellent learners. I am proud of each and every one of you for the resilience you’ve shown despite the difficult year.

Well done to the P6 who will be our House and Vice Captains next school year. I am proud of all the children who put themselves forward for a Captain position. There will be plenty of other responsibility roles in P7.

The P6 wrote wonderful stories for their P1 buddies which went home in the new P1 gift bags. I know you’ll be excellent buddies when the time comes.

Have an amazing holiday and I’ll see you when you’re back as the new P7.

Primary 6 update

We had a lovely time at Dean Park on Tuesday, the rain stayed off which was a huge bonus.

This week P6 have been planning, writing, and illustrating stories for their P1 buddies. The stories will be created into a book which the new P1 will receive before the Summer holiday.

P6 have also been writing and rehearsing their House Captain speeches. Tomorrow they will film their speeches and next week the classes will vote for the 2021/22 House Captains and Vice Captains.

Primary 6 update

I hope everyone had a wonderful Bank Holiday weekend and enjoyed the glorious sunshine.

I can’t believe we are coming into June and the final month of Primary 6. This month is going to be busy. Below is information for parents and carers.

Buddying

We are hopeful that buddying will be able to go ahead in August. Thank you to all the parents and carers who signed the forms allowing the pupils to record videos for their P1 buddies. This week Primary 6 will find out the name of their P1 buddy and will record their ‘Hello’ videos introducing themselves.

God’s Loving Plan

This week we will be commencing our God’s Loving Plan unit. Primary 6 have been notified that this will be happening and have been encouraged to let their parents and carers know. Primary 6 are aware of what is expected of them during this unit. Please be prepared to discuss sensitive issues at home with your child.

Lastly, if the weather stays as it has been this weekend we will be spending a lot more time outdoors. Please ensure children apply suncream before coming to school.

Thank you,

Miss Mudge

Home Learning Primary 6 – wb 11th January

Hello Primary 6,

Happy New Year! It’s not the start to the school year we expected but hopefully, we’ll all be safely back in school soon. Until then I have created home learning tasks for Monday and Tuesday. I have posted the tasks below but I will also post them on Microsoft TEAMS. Going forward TEAMS will be the place where all home learning tasks will be posted. I’ll also be able to communicate with you via the chat feature on TEAMS throughout the school day.

I’ll also post ‘a beginning of the week check-in’ form on TEAMS which will replace our class feelings books and feelings box whilst at home. There’s no obligation to fill this in (just like in class) but it’s there if you do want to share how you’re feeling during this strange time.

If you need to contact me you can email or go onto the TEAMS chat page during school hours.

Hopefully, this won’t be for too long and we’ll be back in our class soon. Until then stay safe and I’ll speak to you soon.

Merry Christmas from Primary 6

Well we’ve made it to the end of 2020. It’s been a very different start to a school year! I am so proud all the boys and girls for their resilience and hard work over the last two terms. I am proud to be your teacher!

We’ve had a lovely week enjoying the Pantomime, having our Christmas Party, doing Christmas craft activities and having our pyjama and movie day today.

I hope all the parents and carers have managed to access and watch the Mount Carmel Christmas Extravaganza. Who knew Primary 6 were such good dancers – lots of talent for our next Summer show (fingers crossed!).

Wishing all the P6’s and their families a safe and healthy Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Love Miss Mudge x

Primary 6 update

What another busy week in Primary 6!

Over the last couple of weeks, the Primary 6’s have been planning, writing, and illustrating their own Christmas stories for P1-3. The pupils worked collaboratively in pairs and trios. Tymek and Krystian worked together to write their story in Polish!

To help them with this task the pupils first looked at popular children’s Christmas stories to inspire them. The pupils enjoyed reading them too!

Next, they worked together to plan their stories developing a plotline, characters, and an overriding positive Christmas message.

The pupils then typed and illustrated their stories including a front cover and blurb. I am so impressed by the finished results and the pupils cannot wait for the P1-3s to enjoy their stories next week.

This week we continued with our 3D and 2D shape topic. One group learned about the properties of a circle and had plenty of practice drawing circles of different radii with a compass.

Other groups looked at tiling 2D shapes and had the opportunity to take part in lots of practical activities to build on this skill. I was impressed with their tiling creations!

As a class, the pupils looked at identifying the nets of 3D shapes. They used the 3D shapes to help them with follow up tasks.

On Friday the pupils took part in a real-life price comparison task. They had to find the prices of Christmas dinner food items in three different supermarkets. They then totaled the costs of the items in each supermarket to find out which was the cheapest. Some pupils got a shock at the price differences between supermarkets.

Next week is our final week before the Christmas holidays and we are going to be very busy with different activities to make the week special. There is no homework now until after the holidays. I was very happy with the home projects and the effort that was put into them.

Keep your eyes peeled for a VERY special Primary 6 Christmas message 🙂

Thank you to the boys and girls for the very lovely card that was sneakily left on my desk on Friday!

All about shape in Primary 6

We have had another busy week in Primary 6! There has been so much excellent work I had to share it with parents and carers.

The pupils started exploring 3D and 2D shapes this week. Some of our pupils were identifying polygons and their properties whilst others explored regular and irregular 2D shapes.

All pupils revised the properties of 3D shapes and the pupils were able to take part in practical activities.

The pupils also created their own tessellations with some pupils opting to use 2D shapes and others challenging themselves by creating their own templates.

The pupils also learned how to draw 3D shapes and I was so impressed with the work they produced!

The pupils also used their problem solving (and patience) skills to try and solve tangrams. These proved challenging but they used their resilience to try and solve them.

What a busy week. I’m so proud of all the Primary 6’s. We’re looking forward to exploring 2D and 3D shape further next week 🙂

Primary 6 News

Primary 6 have been busy these last couple of weeks….

Primary 6 enjoyed the Halloween theme day and looked super all dressed up in their costumes. They took part in some fun Halloween activities including making skeletons using cotton buds.

Primary 6 have been working hard since they returned from the October holiday. In Literacy, they have been writing their own short story over three weeks looking at suspense openers, characterisation, and effective conclusions. This week the pupils will be redrafting and publishing their stories and designing a front and back cover too. Their stories will then be shared with other pupils in the school to enjoy and give feedback on.

The pupils are enjoying the new Rainbow Reward time on a Friday afternoon. This week they chose to go outside and use the ghillie kettle to make hot chocolates. Miss Mudge was a confident individual using the ghillie kettle for the first time herself! There were some ‘bumps’ along the way (not using the ghillie kettle properly and the fire not starting) but everyone eventually enjoyed a lovely hot chocolate.

During our PATHS lessons, Primary 6 has been discussing problems and solutions relevant to their age and stage. This week they took on the role of ‘problem solvers’ and wrote ‘fictional’ problem-solving letters. I was impressed with the strategies they suggested in their letters and the mature responses to the problems presented to them.

The pupils are working on their first Pope Francis Faith Award presentation on their hobby or interest. The pupils are enjoying using PowerPoint and the Internet to make their presentations interesting for their audience. We also watched Father Martin’s ‘Christ the King’ assembly that he kindly recorded for the pupils at Mount Carmel.

We still have lots of work to do before we move into festive activities in the lead up to Christmas. I am very proud of all pupils so far and I am looking forward to celebrating their achievements throughout Primary 6.

P6 Learning Overview – Term 2

Welcome Back to Term 2

I hope everyone had a relaxing holiday.

Below is an overview of the Term 2 learning and teaching

Literacy

Reading

We will be using the Bug Club core readers to aid and build on our active comprehension skills. Pupils will focus on a chapter each week and work on tasks around the chapters they have read. Pupils will also work on specific skills such as inference this term. Some pupils will start to use direct quotes from the text to justify their answers to comprehension questions.

Writing

This term Primary 6 will continue to focus on Narrative writing and Figurative Language (Similes, Alliteration, Personification, and Metaphors). Pupils will focus on purpose and audiencethey will have the opportunity to write stories for some of our younger pupils to listen to and enjoy. We will focus on a different aspect of grammar/punctuation each week. Our writing day will be on Thursday. The class will be told the focus of their writing in the homework grid sent out on a Monday.

Spelling

The spelling groups will continue to experience the Active Literacy spelling program, this will introduce common words and focus phonemes pertinent to their stage. The pupils will revise the Active Spelling strategies throughout Term 2

Numeracy

This term we will be focusing on the four operations within the context of decimals and long multiplication. We will also cover 2D and 3D shapes and a money and finance topic. Mrs. McIntyre will also focus on Beyond Number topics on a Friday. The pupils will experience activities at their stage and level. The revision of multiplication tables will be encouraged across all groups. Sumdog and Topmarks games can help with the rigor of x-tables at home.

Health and Wellbeing

Our focus this term is Internet Safety. This topic ties in with our class topic of digital skills. Our weekly PATHS lessons will focus on social and emotional lessons. The pupils enjoy ‘Pupil of the Day’ and are great at giving each other lovely compliments.

Our PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday and is it very important the pupils bring in a jacket these days. I have also suggested to the pupils that they bring in a change of bottoms just in case our PE days are ‘rainy’ – that will become a certainty coming into the winter months. The pupils understand that I will try my utmost to deliver PE lessons outdoors, however, this might become tricker as we come into the winter months.

IDL

Our class topic this term is Digital Skills. Stong digital skills are vital in today’s world. Pupils will learn about different aspects of Office 365 such as Teams, Forms, and PowerPoint. We will also be learning how to email correctly. Pupils will learn how to use different features of our school iPads and will create and edit videos to highlight learning in the class. Our topic ties in nicely with Literacy – using word processing to publish writing and creating reports. Office 365 can be downloaded FREE from the pupils’ Glow account.

RME

Throughout Primary 6 the pupils will listen to and engage with stories from the Gospel of Matthew. We have already started looking at The Bible as our sacred text. In the months of October and November, we’ll be looking at the story of Creation. During the month of December, we will look at the Nativity through the Gospel of Matthew.

The pupils are also working hard to gain individual reward cards for Amazing Attitude, Wonderful Work, and being a Superstar. When the pupils gain five reward cards, they can trade them in for an individual prize or keep them until everyone gets 5 cards each for a whole class reward 😊

Thank you for all your support.

Miss Mudge 😊

This week in Primary 6…

Primary 6 have been really busy this week. We have been doing lots of activities and learning outdoors.

The pupils worked together to create excellent nature-inspired symmetrical artwork. I was really impressed with how engaged in the task they were and their super pieces of artwork at the end of the lesson.

Literacy

This week the pupils used Microsoft Word to type their Personal Recounts. The pupils learned how to use the thesaurus to uplevel their adjectives.

RME

During RME we discussed inspiring people in our own lives and in our world. The pupils learned about inspiring people such as Ann Frank, Nelson Mandela, and Martin Luther King Jr. The pupils researched and created a Powerpoint on an inspirational person which they will present to the class next week.

Well done Primary 6 for all your hard work this week.

Primary 6 – Writing

This week our writing focus was on Newspaper reports. Primary 6 listened to the ‘twisted’ version of Red Riding Hood and then used their knowledge of the story to create a newspaper article. We looked an example newspaper report first and discussed the features as a class. Another fantastic week of writing in Primary 6!

Primary 6 Playground Leaders

Mr. Devlin from Active Schools has been coming to support Primary 6 to becoming Playground Leaders. They have been focussing on athletics and team games that can be done safely outside. Mr. Devlin has commented on how hard the pupils work during these sessions and how sweaty they are at the end (proof of hard work!).

I delighted at how well the pupils support and encourage each other during these sessions.

Well done Primary 6!

Nature inspired poetry

Last week Primary 6 headed outdoors for their writing lesson. They chose an aspect of nature to write their poem about. Primary 6 learned how to create a diamond poem. They also used a thesaurus to uplevel their adjectives. I am delighted with the poems they created and can’t wait to see what other fantastic writing they’ll do this year.

Primary 6 – Term 1 overview

Welcome to the Primary 6 blog page!

It’s great to have the Primary 6’s back. They have all settled into their new classroom and have been brilliant remembering all the new routines around the school.

Below is an overview of the Term 1 learning and teaching.

Literacy

Reading

Our class novel and the topic this term is Billionaire Boy by David Walliams. The pupils will complete Active Reading tasks related to this novel. This novel has links to other areas of the curriculum such as Art, Health and Wellbeing, and Drama. We have already begun reading it together and David Walliams’ ‘unique’ humor is engaging all the pupils. We will also continue using the Bug Club reading resource to aid our active comprehension skills. Pupils can access this at home too.

Writing

This term Primary 6 will be focussing on Narrative writing and Tools for Writing – VCOP (Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers, and Punctuation).

The pupils will revise the Active Spelling strategies throughout Term 1.

Numeracy

This term we will be focusing on Place Value (whole number and decimals), Rounding and Estimation, and Addition and Subtraction. Mrs. McIntyre will focus on Beyond Number topics on a Friday. The pupils will experience activities at their stage and level. The revision of multiplication tables will be encouraged across all groups. Sumdog and Topmarks games can help with the rigor of x-tables at home.

Health and Wellbeing

Our focus this term is Growth Mindset and The Compassionate and Caring Classroom. These topics cover themes such as Children’s Rights, Relationships and Friendships, Emotions and Behaviours, and Resilience. These topics tie in nicely with our PATHS lessons. The ‘Pupil of the Day’ is up and running and this year we are complementing each other based on each other’s skills and talents.

Mark Devlin from Active schools will be coming in on Tuesday mornings to lead the Playground Leaders scheme. It is important the P6’s have a change of shoes and a jacket as this will be taking place outdoors.

RME

Throughout Primary 6 the pupils will listen to and engage with stories from the Gospel of Matthew. We have already started looking at The Bible as our sacred text. The pupils have already learned lots of amazing facts about The Bible. Next, we will focus on how Christians use The Bible, explore different text types in The Bible, and discuss what is sacred to the pupils. We will also reflect on people who use their gifts to enhance the world.

Thank you,

Miss Mudge 😊

Class of 2020

This morning we said our final farewells to the Primary 7’s. We were able to have them back into the school for a gift presentation. It was lovely seeing them all and how grown up they all look. It has been a different farewell this year but they will always hold a special place in MCPS hearts for being the ‘Lockdown’ Class of 2020.

We are so proud of them and wish them all the best at St Joseph’s.

Hello Primary 6

Hello ‘soon to be’ Primary 6,

I was so happy when I heard I was getting Primary 6 – I had a huge smile on my face.

I’ve been busy getting your new classroom ready and I’ve been planning lots of lovely activities (and a Novel Study) for when you return in August.

I know you’ve seen me around the school and have known me as the Primary 7 teacher for the last 2 years but I’ve recorded a short message to remind you what I look like in case you’ve forgot!  Scroll down for the video.

I’ve also put some photos of what you’re new classroom will look like in August. It’s just missing all of your beautiful work.

I have sent a group email with a Summer challenge for you all.

P7 Leavers Event

Hello Primary 7,

Next week when you come in for your leaver’s gift you do not have to wear school uniform. You can wear your leaver’s hoodie if you want.

Mrs McConville has said that you can bring your mobile phones to take pictures (from a social distance) with your classmates.

I look forward to seeing you all next Thursday for a final goodbye.
