Activity 1 – Talk About Money
Focus – I can talk about and act out how and why money is used in everyday life and can recognise, name and order a range of coins and notes.
Resources – none
Discuss together at home how you use money. Share how different people in the family may spend and save money. What things might be bought daily, weekly? Where does the money come from?
Activity 2 – Money Abroad
Focus – I can talk about and act out how and why money is used in everyday life and can recognise, name and order a range of coins and notes.
Resources – none
Find out about money from another country e.g. country, currency name, value relative to £1, where they saw or found the information.
Activity 3 – What Money?
Focus – I can total my coins and notes to work out how much money I have.
Resources – paper, pens and a selection of coins.
Prepare a simple shopping list and prices e.g. milk 86p, paper 75p, sticky tape £1·28. |List the coins you might use to pay for each item.
Activity 4 – 3 Coin Challenge

What values up to 50p can you make using exactly three coins?
Activity 5 – 21p Combinations
Focus – I can find different ways to pay an exact amount using a variety of coins and notes.

How many different combinations of coins can you use to make 21p? e.g. 20p + 1p, 10p+10+1p
Activity 6 – Using Coins

Choose an item from home with a price shown on the item (e.g. from a pizza menu, food packaging or newspaper, etc.). Write down the coins or notes that could be used to pay exactly for this item. Can you make up a different combination for the same total?
Activity 7 – What Can I Afford?
Focus – I can compare costs to work out what I can afford.
Resources – online shopping and / or catalogue.
Look at either a catalogue or online shopping page. Decide on a budget e.g. £5 to spend. What items or combinations of items an you buy?
Activity 8 – Party Bags
Focus – When buying several of the same item I can work out the total cost and can divide up a sum of money .
Resources – online shopping and / or catalogue.
Create party bags containing at least five items, giving each item a price. List the cost of the individual items and the cost for all the items in one Party Bag. How much would it cost for two, three, ten bags?
Activity 9 – Sharing £12
Focus – When buying several of the same item I can work out the total cost and can divide up a sum of money .
Resources – online shopping and / or catalogue.
Discuss how you could share £12 between 2 people then between 3, 4, 5 and 6 people.
Activity 9 – Make it Up
Focus – I can select and use the most appropriate strategy to solve a variety of money problems.
