P5-7 Homework

This session  we are going to use Seesaw for practice at home where each child can log into their own account: https://app.seesaw.me/#/login

Seesaw was the online learning platform that we used during lockdown. I would like this resource to be ready should we ever need it again. I am also going to make sure that all Pupils are familiar with using this technology to learn. We are hoping in time to use Seesaw to share work from school with home too.

Homework will continue to be reading, spelling and mental maths, where each pupil is at a specified level or in a group.

  • Group reading has now been set in reading records which states the pages to read at home ideally out loud with a Parent or Carer or for the Pupils reading novels they can read a few pages out loud and then finish the rest silently by themselves. All pupils have had a reading assessment and the information is shared in their reading record. This assessment helps me to set reading that is at the appropriate level of challenge for each pupil. Otherwise, for those who would like to read more, every Pupil has chosen a reading book from the library to read. These usually allow Pupils to take an Accelerated Reader Quiz which can earn House Tokens.
  • Spelling homework practice has continued in the same way this year, where new words are learned on Tuesday and then practiced four times a week at home. These words are then tested on Monday morning where a record is kept of the score and also how many times the words were practiced. I also teach spelling, including rules, during literacy lessons.
  • Mental Maths has also continued in the same way as previous years: practice four times a week at home and then test on Monday whereupon the next week’s work is set.

If you are going to do any homework, reading is the priority.

For those who want to do more:

For any pupils looking to practice their writing there are excellent resources on line including 500 Words or 100 Word Challenges which they would be welcome to share with the rest of the class.

Another activity for anyone keen to do more maths is iXL. Each pupil has their own login. The pupils that answer the top three number of questions each week will get: 1st Prize a Golden House Token, 2nd Prize two House Tokens and 3rd prize a House Token.

Read Theory, is another online resource that the pupils log into which is comprehension work on many different subjects.

Homework challenges and tasks are sometimes set during holidays and usually appear on this blog. The pupils are always free to do projects or holiday homework and present them to the rest of the class on the first week back of the new term.

Good luck,

Mr Archibald
