Whoosh & Kaboom! Science-Stem Activity

Good Morning Boys and Girls,

For today’s topic I am going to ask you to relate the title of this post and a picture of one of my favourite Disney films. Can you guess what we will build today? Can you name the film?

.

.

.

Well done! Today we will build a Catapult, in order to do that I am going to show you some materials you can use and a possible way to do it. You can choose the level of difficulty you want:

Spicy: You can follow the steps from below.

Hot: You will build your own using your own way to do it.

With this activity you will be developing your Scientific skills, such as critical thinking, planning, problem-solving,  persevering, following steps.

Some of you might need help or supervision when using the materials. If you realize you don’t have the exact materials you can always find other things  to help you, that would be a fantastic problem-solving!

Score Card and Planner: Click the green link to find a handout that will track your design, play and questioning skills.

Whoosh & Kaboom!

Materials

Steps 1

Collect all the materials you will need and set them on your table, ready to begin.

Step 2-3

As it is shown in the picture, pile up 7 popsicles  and make a safe knot at the end of each.  The 2 popsicles left, pill them up too and make a knot just at one end.

Steps 4-5

Like a big tweezer open the two popsicles and place them on top and under the other big pile. Make sure the one in the bottom passes between the last two popsicles of the pile. See picture below.

Step 6-7

Make sure everything is well tight and stable. At the end glue the lid at the tip of the popsicle, make sure it’s well glued before using it.

While you wait for it to dry you can start preparing your targets, here are two ideas.

Let’s begin the battle! You can comment on the post about your work and thoughts. Also, you can send me a photo of your design to amanda.maturana@aberdeenshire.gov.uk

This is mine, it was so fun trying it! There were a few things I didn’t have so I replaced them and it worked 🙂

Well done for trying!

HWB: MILD – Emotional Crayons

Morning Everyone,

I hope you are all enjoying our mini project on conflict with our featured story ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’.

After reading or listening to the story a few times we notice that the crayons are expressing their feelings to Duncan as to why they have quit and left Duncan.

Use the questions below and discuss the family members, everyone might have different answers as it is their opinion.

Can you describe what each crayon is feeling?

What words can you find in each letter that tell you their emotion?

Which crayon do they feel most sorry for, and why?

Which crayon seems happiest and why do they say this?

Which crayon would they most like to cheer up?

What could they do to make one of the crayons feel happier?

Which crayon is the angriest one and why?

What could Duncan do to calm this crayon down?

Use the sway below to go through some examples.

Flower of power Resource

#EveryCrayonCounts

The Crayons all come from the same box, they are all apart of a larger team. Just like you and your family we can all have different emotions but we should all still come together.

Follow the link below to make your own every crayon counts sign to share with family.

Magic Words – Spanish

During this period of being at home we have learnt to be more thankful about people, moments and opportunities. Also, the beautiful Assembly we had yesterday gave us the opportunity to think of different ways to say thank you.

So when we are thankful about something or someone we say “Thank you”  and that is our first Magic Word. We usually use 3 magic words all the time, can you remember the other 2?

Your challenges for today is related to these important Magic Words, click on the sway to see them.

Magic Words
The following words can make a huge difference in our lives by using them. We use them all the time and lately we might have been using them even more. Today we will use them as much as we …

Spicy – Literacy – Writing no.3

I selected ‘The Six-Legged Spider’ as my focus.  It contained a conflict between the main character, the spider, and a long list of employers.

This was the front cover I redesigned.  This was my second attempt.  On my first try I included some of the challenges she faced in the story, but then I thought it might give to much of the plot away, so I had another go.

I looked at some other blurbs before writing mine. I came across some that didn’t give too much away, but made you want to look inside to find out more.  I tried to keep mine similar to this, as well as short and sweet!

I can’t wait to see what you come up with Spicy writers! You can show yours to your teachers over on your Sway Journals or on Seesaw. 📝

Health and Wellbeing VE words

Just wanted to say a BIG Thank You to all those that have tried out our Health and Wellbeing task. They are looking FAB!

Don’t worry if you haven’t had a chance to do one yet you still have another week to go.

Please send on your creative pieces of your work to your teacher so we can collect them all to create a Sway for you all to see .

Thanks

Miss Deans
