Executive Showcase @ Arbroath Academy

Posted by Les Hutchinson, Head of Quality and Performance

Recently four members of the Directorate’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT) attended the first of our Executive Showcases. We were warmly welcomed by a group of enthusiastic staff, who described a number of activities in Arbroath Academy grouped around the theme of “Together – with pride”. Each item highlighted collaborative working based on the school’s agreed values. The examples that were showcased covered the whole spectrum of school and community life: international, national, community, partners, cluster, and across the school.

It’s only possible to cover a few examples here, but you can see a bit more by flicking through the Powerpoint presentation.

The Pupil Council is inclusive – i.e. all pupils can apply to be a representative. Following application, pupils are trained in communication skills, public speaking and planning.

respect

The values were developed by the Pupil Council and form the basis of Arbroath Academy’s ethos. They worked with their peers to develop the design that now features on a wall in the social area.

Pupil reps attend the Parent Council meeting; planned the school’s Funfest; met with the catering staff and provided feedback to Tayside Contracts; work with the Support Assistants to improve behaviour in the social area; and 30 Pupil Council reps attended a School Improvement Partnership Programme event in Edinburgh.

“The Pupil Council love to be involved and take responsibility.

Every second year the school organizes a trip to Rwanda. A group of pupils (8 to10) are selected through an application and interview process. All applicants are given feedback to help them clarify learning and potential career pathways. The local community is actively involved in these trips, with all costs being met through fund-raising, so there is no cost to the participating pupils. The trip is intended to support schools in Rwanda and involves practical work (see some of the photos!).

A key collaboration has been participating in the School Improvement Partnership Programme (SIPP). this involves collaboration with two secondary schools from other parts of Scotland to share good practice and jointly develop approaches to improving attainment. During the Easter holiday in 2015, staff gave up their time to participate in a conference at Stirling. A concentrated effort on improving attendance has led to improved attainment at Arbroath academy, with posters and leaflets produced to help everyone understand the importance of attendance. The school has also seen a big increase in the engagement at parents’ evening, with an increased attendance from 22% to 50%. learning from SIPP is reflected in the school’s improvement plan and work with the other schools is ongoing.

The final example to highlight here is the development of Teacher Learning Communities. These are cross-curricular groups who meet together to establish a professional peer learning culture. This provides a regular opportunity to discuss and trial ideas, reflect on issues and report back on progress. The TLCs have created an open community, leading to natural sharing and support. Benefits include getting to know each other better, developing new ideas and raising morale. It also helps teachers with their personal action plans and links to their General Teaching Council update requirements.

“Quality professional discussion is a regular part of the life of the school.

Overall the SLT members who attended the showcase were impressed with the enthusiasm and passion that the staff demonstrated, and it is clear to us that there is a real sense of working together with pride in Arbroath Academy.

There was also a lively #askSLT session after the Showcase, but more of that in another entry.

From this week’s SLT

Posted by Les Hutchinson, Head of Quality and Performance

We previously committed to publishing a summary of the key points/highlights from our Senior Leadership Team meetings. Now that we’re settling into the rhythm of regular meetings, I hope that these updates will be more consistent.

At every meeting, the first item on our agenda is to share successes and challenges. This week’s successes included:

  • the visit of a group of teachers from Sweden, with the prospect of maintaining links;
  • the leadership retreat for secondary headteachers at Ardoch;
  • the Early Years Collaborative/Raising Attainment for All learning session; and
  • the first roadshow presentations on our statement of ambition and budget position (second roadshow – not such a success)

Our challenges:

  • meeting the attainment challenge in the National Improvement Framework
  • preparing for the arrival of Syrian refugees in Arbroath – we’re very pleased with the support from the voluntary sector who are offering support.

The last time we met we had a creative conversation about how to tackle some of our current recruitment issues. We’d like to encourage you to share your ideas with us in the comments section – go on, be creative!

As part of our performance management agenda, we’ll be reviewing one of the priority themes from our Directorate Improvement Plan on a regular basis. The future attractions are:

  • 16 December 2015 – Raise the attainment and achievement of all of our pupils.
  • 27 January 2016 – Provide positive, nurturing and inclusive environments to support learning and development
  • 24 February 2016 – Restructure Criminal Justice Services in line with national policy.
  • 23 March 2016 – Ensure that our priorities, ambitions and our resources are fully aligned.

Put a note in your diary to come back here for an update on the theme(s) of your choice.

Note of previous meeting

Hear all about it!

Staff from Schools and Learning, Children and Young People, and Quality and Performance are invited to attend a series of briefings where members of the Senior Leadership Team will outline the budget position and statement of ambition for Children and Learning. Sessions will start with presentations (maximum of 30 minutes) followed by questions and answers.

The first sessions will be held in the Boardroom, Angus House on Wednesday 11 November 2015 starting at 0815 and 1200. It’s OK to come along for part of the session, you don’t have to stay to the end.

Briefings will also be held in Kirriemuir Town Hall on Wednesday 18 November and Carnoustie High School Theatre on Wednesday 2 December. Again sessions will start at 0815 and 1200.

Dates for the Arbroath leg of the SLT tour will follow. Watch this space.

At the consultative group…

posted by Les Hutchinson, Head of Quality and Performance

Within the People DIrectorate we have a consultative group (imaginatively called the People Consultative Group). The PCG brings together unions, staff representatives and managers to look at issues that affect our workforce. We also look at some wider aspects of service delivery. Generally meetings are held every two months. The minutes of the meetings are  published on our Intranet sites (we’ll let staff know when they’re available), but we’d also like to let you know about some of the highlights as soon as possible.

So, yesterday’s highlights included:

  • As previously mentioned, we will be visiting staff groups (during the working day) to explain our budget position and to seek input to our future planning.
  • We had lively conversations about improving support for staff during service reviews – especially in the implementation phase –  and the level of uncertainty surrounding Health and Social Care Integration.
  • We have established a group to look at the key messages from our recent Investors in People assessment. This group will produce an action plan and set of commitments about how managers will support and engage with staff.
  • We will be consulting on a set of values that we will all use in our daily work. More details to follow.

What happened at SLT?

You may be asking, ‘What is SLT?’

Well, SLT (Senior Leadership Team) is a meeting of the senior managers in the People Directorate to manage our key activities and review how we’re progressing. We will be meeting at least twice per month, and it is our intention to provide regular updates following these meetings.

Here are the highlights from yesterday’s meeting:

  • We reaffirmed our overarching commitment to fully embrace the ‘Getting It Right’ agenda. This will be reflected in our next Directorate Improvement Plan .
  • eSLT will be planning a series of locality roadshows in the coming weeks to explain our budget to our staff and to seek their input and ideas for future budgets. More information will follow.
  • We will be reviewing all regular meetings and groups within the Directorate to assess their purpose, value and where the outputs should be reported.
  • Communication will be a standing item on  agendas to ensure that we provide information as soon as possible after meetings – like this!
  • We want to encourage everyone to contribute to this blog – send us draft entries, comment on what you read, give us ideas about what you’d like to read here, and give us feedback on how useful you find entries like this one.

How to follow this blog

by Les Hutchinson

follow blogWe realise that some people who find their way here will not be experts in using blogs. So this is a quick guide to ways to keep up with our entries.

The first way is to keep coming back here. If you’ve found us once, and would like to read more or comment, then please visit again. We recommend that you add us as a favourite/bookmark (depending on your web browser) to make life a wee bit easier.

The second way is to follow us on Twitter. You’ll find us at @AngusChildren. Every time we publish a new entry, we’ll tweet about it. So you’ll know when there’s something new to get involved with.

Thirdly, you can add us to an RSS reader. (This is a bit more complicated.) An RSS reader basically brings entries from as many blogs as you like to one place. There are lots of RSS readers available for free. When you’ve picked one, you’ll probably need to visit our homepage and copy the web address to paste into the reader. After that, you can choose when you want to look at your RSS reader to see all of the new entries from the blogs that you follow.

If any of that has confused you, please leave a question in the comments and we’ll do our best to help.
