Our Gaelic Cafe

On Friday 2nd May some of p6/7 set up a Gaelic cafe. Throughout the morning we had to speak Gaelic to the customers and the other pupils. We served tea, coffee and cakes that were kindly made by Cameron’s  mum. We also had to make help sheets for all the customers so that any of them who do not know how to speak Gaelic can try and learn a wee bit. Oliver was running the juice, Cameron and Annie were running teas and coffee, Izzy and Ciara were running the cakes and Robbie was adding the money and giving out change. Over all the day went really well and we made a profit of £29.19.

The National Mod in Paisley

On Sunday the 13th of October Port Ellen Primary School Gaelic choir set off to their fun and exciting Mod in Paisley where they would compete against other choirs from different schools.

They stayed in a Premiere Inn and got their dinner, lunch and breakfast provided for them.

On Monday the 14th of of October they all set off for their competitions where they sang the Unison, Puirt-a-beul and two part harmony.

They did very well and they won all their competitions!!!!

That night they went to the concert where they sang their songs and it was recorded to go onto T.V.

In the morning they had to leave to go home . On the ferry they sang their songs as entertainment.

When they were going off the ferry the pipers piped them off.

Primary 5 Learning

Primary 5 have been doing a lot of maths in fact I think they are math experts, they have been doing a lot of work on their times tables and place value.  For homework they have been getting sudoku for fun. In Spelling they have been doing the normal Nelson spelling textbook(plurals).   For PE they have had Brandon Freeman in as a sports ambassador from High School to teach different skills and basketball. They have had Mrs Macdonald in for gaelic to teach numbers up to 20 and items in the class room. For art they had Mrs Onions who tought them how to change a spring picture into a autumn picture.For Music most of them have taken up an musical instrument and received them today.  Their class room has now became a secret agent HQ as they have designed their own gadgets and wrote about them.

Choir Sing Their Heart Out

Every Thursday after school every one in the choir go to the hall for practice. On Saturday 2nd June all of the choir went to Bowmore to the local mod. They sang the unison, unison 2, strathspey, reel and the peurt a ‘beul. They came first for the unison and second for the strathspey and reel. They won two trophies, one for the Psalm and the other trophy was for their unison. The choir said “Yeah we came first!” Then Mrs Macdonald the conductor said “We won.” They all had fun.

The Choir Sing Their Hearts Out

On the 2nd of June, PortEllen Gaelic choir were at the High school, to sing at the local mod,they were conduced by Maureen MacDonald, the head Teacher.

The first song they sang was the unison, secondly was Peurt a ‘ bheul, then the reel. They made some mistakes and Mrs Macdonald said ” we have blown it now” But just then Mr Macdonald, her Husband came though and said they had won 1st in

the unison. Yeh!  They also came second in the perurt a ‘ bheul.

Action Song Success

Port Ellen P1/2s, aged 5-6 won the action song trophy, against another two schools, at the Mod in Bowmore high school!!! On Saturday 2nd June. They sang a song called {Engine,Tractor Agus Van}
Ellie said “I am glad we won!” Miss Macrae said “Well done.”  Everyone wore fantastic costumes and Ruraidh did very well as Donny Dotamen!!!

Learning about the Moon and Gaelic

Today at school in the afternoon at 1:00 we had Mrs Rae and we were makeing a moon chart. We made little moons, you get a cup and a black pen and trace over the cup and get your pen and colour in the moon and get tin foil and wrap the tin foil around the moon all the moon shapes and thats how you do it.  After break we had Miss Macrae and went on Twitter and a man was asking us to tell him the days of the week in gaelic. Then we all got given numbers and typed them on the computer then after that it was home time.

Our Achievements At The Mod

On Sunday 16th October the Port Ellen Primary Gaelic Choir flew off on an aeroplane to Stornoway.  It took us 40 minutes to get there and it was 20 minutes less than what it normally is.  The next day was Monday 17th October that was the day of the mod, the people that were doing poems and solos had to get up quite early to go and do them.  I got a 4th for my poem and for my solo I got a score of 178.  My choir did really well, we won all of our songs that is our 2 unisons, 2 two parts and our Puirt a beul.

Carved Stones

A long time ago people in Scotland carved stones instead of writing.  We don’t know why they did it.  Perhaps it was to mark a grave or tell people about something that happened.  All the stones have different symbols on them, each of them mean something different.  The Picts carved lots  of mythical beasts on their stones.  You can find lots of carved stones all over Scotland. In Orkney there is the ring of Brodga and there is a big hole in the middle of the stones.  Some people think a carved mirror means a woman. Carved stones are one of the only things we can get information from that time, because all the other materials have rotted away.  The Gaels carved stones had crosses on them because they were Christian.  Here are some we made in class.
