Sports Day

On Monday 14th of June, Port Ellen took place in their sports day. We do a lot of races like the p6/7s do 100 meter sprint, mini marathon and a flat sprint. The whole school does an egg and spoon race, an obstacle race, a flat race and a mini marathon starting at the pitch. The adults who come do a egg and spoon race. Our house captains’ pick 4 people to present their houses for the relay race: Orsay, Texa and Nave. The first place in the really race is Nave. Second is Orsay. Last is Texa. The girl champion this year was Bonnie Cresswell and the boy champion Freddy Munro. Well done everyone!

Saint Phnx

On Friday the 22nd of August we visited Bowmore high school and met Saint Phoenix. Saint Phoenix was a band of two men who sang the song happy place. All of Primary 5 and upwards from Port Ellen, Port Charlotte and Bowmore primary came with us. P56s went on the Mundell bus while P 7s went on the mini bus that we use for the school bus. They showed us how to practice our vocals and it goes like “mmm” they also showed us some exercises they do like wiggles and wobbles! Their icon was a blue feather and they told us a story about why they choose a blue feather as there logo. The story was, he was scrolling through TikTok at night because he couldn’t get to sleep but he found this video about a blue feather and he watched it and it was quite interesting and it made him fall asleep. as he woke up to go to work he told his wife about the video his wife didn’t really believe it but when he went out the front door, she shouted stop to him so looked around and when he looked down he saw a blue feather and that’s how it started! After that they played us their song happy place. It was really helpful.

ENDEAVOUR HEALTHY TUCK

Hi, my Endeavour is healthy tuck which is learning how to make healthy food and what healthy food is. In the end of Endeavour I would like know how to know different recipes off by heart.

Healthy baking is when you do your normal baking but adding some health to it to make it healthy. Maybe put a piece of fruit into it. For example, banana muffins, it’s making normal bread but mushing bananas and adding them in.

I am raising money for breakfast club which is a club that starts at 8:30 every Wednesday, anyone in school can come. We get all different things like toast, cereal, scrambled eggs on toast and sometimes even waffles!

Maths Inside Winners

Port Ellen Primary school recently took part in the National Maths Inside competition as part of Maths Week Scotland. Entrants must take a photo and write about the ‘Maths Inside’ the picture they have taken, identifying and reflecting on the maths in the world around us.

This year we had commended entries from P1- Rosie Hannett with Boaty Bubbles, P2 Noah Johnston with Rolling In, P6 Archie Logan with Dosing Sheep, P7 Thomas Edwards with Distracting Refracting Reflecting Rainsbows, Rachel Heads with Dancing into Shape, and Hugh Mackinnon with Bend it like Magnus. Jacob Hart P7 was a runner up at second level with Angel’s Share and Brody Shakespeare P6 was the winner at second level with Taking a Photo of a Photo of a Photo… Port Ellen Primary School itself was also a awarded best school for the quality of engagement and entries.

Finally we had overall winners in the 2023 competition: in the category ‘Oot An’ Aboot’ Aidan Ambrose P6 won £50 gift voucher for his Archaeology entry and in the category ‘In Motion’ Ellie Chandler P6 won £50 for her Bee Tornadoes Entry. Well done everyone.

Ellie’s Endeavour

My Endeavour

My name is Ellie, I’m in primary 5 and I am sewing for my Endeavour. Endeavour is where you pick a project to do, and it starts on April the 18th and ends sometime in June. Ambitious, new learning shared with others and independent; are the key things for Endeavour. These are the different things I have learned: to sew a needle in a sewing machine, make a knot in a sewing machine and do a knot in thread.

Shoe Box Appeal

It’s easy to choose gifts for people who have so little. Shampoo, a pair of socks, a notepad, a small toy, a bag of sweets – things we take for granted will seem like luxuries to people living in poverty. By filling a shoebox with simple things you can bring hope this Christmas.

Shoeboxes will be delivered to vulnerable people in Ukraine, Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Romania and Serbia.

We sent 65 Blythwood boxes this year to send to children around the world.
