On the 5th Feb the organising committee for the Local schools Burns event met for the second time to confirm their plans for the day. The representatives from Rockfield, Lochnell and Kilninver’s Pupil councils printed certificates and organised nametags and presentations. Hopefully the arrangements we have made will ensure that the day runs smoothly.

On 11th Feb over 200 children from the Lorne area came together to compete in a range of Burns competitions that had been organised by the pupil councils of Rockfield, Lochnell and Kilninver Primary schools and over 400 entries were received.
The event was held in the Argyllshire Gathering halls and the adjudicators came from the local Burns club who had donated £500 towards the costs of the day.
We are very proud of our P5 pupils who took part in the annual athletics competition in Atlantis Leisure. Rockfield had 2 teams in the final, Rockfield A and Rockfield B, and we are delighted to say that our B team won first place in the competition and our A team came second! The children worked very hard to improve their skills and should be very proud of their achievements
Schools from the Oban area were invited by Tesco to enter a competition to design a bag to launch their new ‘Click and Collect’ service and Rockfield were lucky enough to have the winner in their school! Our winning designer got his logo printed onto reusable bags and every family in the school was given one for free. As well as this, he was also awarded a £25 gift card for himself to spend and a £250 cheque for the school. Well done!
Some of our Primary 6 and 7 pupils were delighted to hear that they had been awarded prizes after taking part in a national writing competition. The children entered a writing competition organised by Scottish Ballet that was based on the story of Hansel and Gretel.
Lots of fantastic pieces of work were produced by the classes involved and lots of hard work and effort that was put into the pieces of writing so everyone was delighted when a letter arrived to the school to inform us that one of our pupils was a winner!

The children in the Gaelic classes in Rockfield got a huge surprise last Monday when a crew from the BBC turned up at the school! The pupils had taken part in some filming for Gaelic television programme “Dè a nis?” earlier this year and were delighted to be told by the television presenters that out of 16 schools, the pupils from Rockfield were the fastest on space hoppers! The children in Rockfield showed off a wealth of talent to celebrate Burns’ day. Our Clan Captains started the celebrations by giving the whole school some information about the life of Burns at a whole school assembly and then each of the four clans within the school hosted their own cèilidh. The children were invited to perform either something Scottish or something related to Robert Burns at their cèilidh and each child who performed was awarded points for their clan. The Primary Learning Centre pupils of Rockfield Primary, Oban have enjoyed learning outdoors over the last three months in partnership with the Stramash team. We based our activities around the woodland characters from the children’s classic story “The Gruffalo” by Julia Donaldson.

As part of their topic learning all about food, the children from Rockfield Primary’s Gaelic Nursery visited MacPherson’s foods in Oban. They had great fun learning about recycling and how sandwiches, wraps and baguettes were made from the start to the finished product that’s sold in the shops!
Children from Oban’s Gaelic Medium department in Rockfield Primary School shared a fabulous afternoon of song, music and stories on Thursday 22 November with a special guest all the way from Cork, Ireland.
In advance of his concert as part of the town’s Winter Festival, John Spillane, a gifted singer, songwriter and performer, made a special visit to the school, courtesy of the festival organisers. John’s blend of songs in Irish and English, combined with his witty stories and highly engaging manner, were a huge hit with the pupils.
