Comic Relief 2013
Rothesay Primary had a Red Nose Day on Friday the 15th March. All the Primary 7s gathered up to organise a day full of fun for the rest of the pupils. We had a sponge throw; nail bar; designer dreams stall; a raffle; beat the goalie; car wash; float the lemon game and face painting. Everyone had a brilliant day! Along with the money raised in Pre-5, Primary 2 and the red noses sold by our pupil council, we raised a staggering £1028.78! It was such a successful day for all the Rothesay Primary pupils and staff.

Rothesay Pre-5 Eco Campaign
Rothesay Primary Pre-5 eco group recently visited their local newspaper, The Buteman to ask for help with their latest campaign. With the help of Alex Robertson, they are going to build an eco greenhouse made out of 2 litre clear plastic bottles. Only its not 10 clear bottles they need, but 2000 which is a very long sing indeed! The Buteman very kindly printed the appeal and with a poster campaign as well, the bottles are flooding in. We have counted 800 so far.
Rothesay Primary P7 Burns Supper
On the 25th of January, the Primary 7 classes of Rothesay Primary School had their Burns Supper at Mount Stuart. A group from our class went out to Mount Stuart to set up the venue, including ‘red, red roses’ at each table. We were so lucky to have such a beautiful venue for our Burns Supper! Mount Stuart also helped us out at the last minute by providing their mini-bus (plus driver) when we realised ours had been double booked! Thank you everyone at Mount Stuart for accommodating us. Primary 6 Football Tournament
Rothesay Primary’s P6 football team performed well at the recent Lloyds TSB 7 a-side Football Tournament in Port Glasgow. The boys won two games and lost one. The boys will attend the finals in Hampden in February.
Thanks to Jan McKirdy and Jane Gillies who organised this opportunity for the team. Good luck in the finals!!
Argyll and Bute Badminton 2013 Championship
Rothesay Primary achieved success at the recent Argyll and Bute Badminton Championships. The Primary 7 pupils secured Gold Medals in the Girls Singles, Boys Singles, Girls Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Well done to all those who took part and thanks to those who organised it.
Rothesay Primary Nativity
Rothesay Primary celebrated Christmas together at the United Church of Bute on 21st December. Primary 7 welcomed parents, carers, family and friends by singing carols while Primary 1 got ready. Then, we smiled as in came Mary and Joseph, the shepherds, angels and the innkeeper and his wife – with many travellers – all waving when they saw someone they knew! Rothesay Primary WOW two sold-out audiences!
P4-7 pupils in Rothesay Primary took part in an oustanding pantomime last week called ‘Cinderella Jones’. This production told the story of Sally, a girl in a very similar dilema to Cinderella in the traditional fairy tale. We had a 5 strong team of rapping mice, a duo of hilarious fairy godmothers and their ‘squeegie’ dancer girls, Matt Vinyl: an overly confident DJ and his two crazy pals, our two ugly (but they were beautiful) sisters, the cool and charming Surfin’ Sam and of course, Sally. Book Week Scotland on Bute
Rothesay Primary celebrated Book Week Scotland in lots of different ways. P6 pupils read the nominated books for the Scottish Book Awards to Pre-5, while P1, 2 and 3 also voted on their favourite which was ‘The Day Louis Got Eaten’ in every class! We had a ceilidh on St Andrews Day with each class ‘doing a turn’. Primary 3 sang ‘Ye canny shove yer granny aff a bus!’ which made us all laugh, Primary 2 sang a rousing rendition of ‘O Flower of Scotland’, Primary 1-2 danced the St Bernard’s Waltz beautifully and P1 led the ceilidh dancing. P7 Dragons’ Den event in Rothesay Primary
Primary seven pupils at Rothesay Primary School stood up in front of seven fierce dragons on Friday in the school’s own version of the Dragon’s Den TV series.
Pitches for a series of fantastic inventions were put before the seven Dragons, who had the unenviable task of choosing between the spider-catching Zapatron, a heated sofa and a jacket that charges your mobile phone as you walk, to name just a few. Rothesay Primary & pre-5 raise £848.25 for Children in Need!
Primary 7 organised an amazing Bring and Buy Sale and a Pudsey raffle. The pupil council sold Pudsey merchandise and the whole school dressed in spots… to raise lots! And what a lot we raised! Remembrance Day
On Sunday 11th November S6 captains Megan, Ryan, Laura and Sophie participated in the annual Remembrance Service at Croc an Raer, Bute. The service, to commemorate civilian sailors lost during the Second World War and buried at the cemetery. To reflect the many nationalities buried far from home, the captains laid flags representing each of the sailors’ country of origin whilst reading the poem Taking a Stand by John Bailey. George Wyllie: A Celebration
Primary pupils 7 in Rothesay Primary have been learning about the late, internationally-acclaimed artist, George Wyllie, whose often humorous works included The Paper Boat and The Straw Locomotive. We have been finding out about his life, his achievements and today we created mini replicas of his ‘paper boat’ which started out in Govan, Glasgow and went onto become an exhibit in New York, USA, in 1990.
Their boats will be part of an exhibition in the Mitchell Library, Glasgow, opening this Thursday called “George Wyllie Retrospective: In Pursuit of the Question Mark”. The Flower Garden at Rothesay Primary Pre-5
Rothesay Primary and Pre-5, along with parents, carers and friends, celebrated the ‘Grand Opening’ of our new outdoor area on Wednesday 3rd October. The area was planned, almost 2 years ago, by our present P2 when they were in the nursery and it has taken a lot of hard work and determination for it to develop into the challenging, exciting and beautiful space it is today. The children decided they wanted a workers area, a secret hide-out, a quiet place, a place to plant flowers and vegetables, a slide and a tunnel, a huge sandpit and lots of music… and a place to find creepy crawlies and to fly with butterflies. Rothesay Primary Wins the Cup!
The pupils at Rothesay Primary were delighted to win the James McMillan Trophy at their local Horticultural Show. The pupils had entered their tomatoes along with growers from all over the island and were amazed to win the best exhibit in section 7! They also managed to scoop a first for their cooking apples, dessert apples, rhubarb and sweet peas. We’d love to share the secret of success that our Young Green Fingers achieved – but we think it was mostly down to luck!
Rothesay Primary trip to Science Centre
Primary 7 enjoyed a fun-filled day at the Glasgow Science Centre on Tuesday. We loved the planetarium – especially when it went pitch black and you could see all the stars overhead. It was fun to see the phases of the moon projected on the big screen above us. We watched ‘Hubble 3D’ in the IMAX cinema and couldn’t believe the amazing images that this telescope could bring us. The stars were incredible and seeing the astronauts getting ready for their missions to mend the Hubble was very exciting. The Science Mall is full of interesting exhibits. We particularly enjoyed the thermal camera, the visual illusions, the electricity orb, the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ feature and the technology labs. Thank you to Mrs Blair for organising our trip and to the Science Centre for a great day out! We’re just delighted the ferries were on!

Rothesay Joint Campus presents “We Will Rock You”! We performed to a sell-out audience last night (Thursday) and will do so again tonight (Friday)… amazing performances from pupils from Primary 7 to Secondary 6.

Numeracy & maps with Rothesay P2
We were pleased to receive Task 2 – ‘where is my head?’ from Easter Island.
We had lots of ideas of what we could do to fulfil the task. We decided that we would like to create a 3D map of Easter Island.
We had great fun creating the island using paper and glue to make volcanoes, mountains and rocks. We made sure that there was enough room left so that we could stand some of our clay models on them and we all agree that it looks really effective.

Rothesay P2 starts Easter Island challenges
Our head is looking good out in the garden.
He has settled into the Pre-5 garden area which has an Island theme, so he is standing tall keeping guard on the coastline!
He is being admired by all the pupils and we are able to keep an eye on him from the classroom.
