Numeracy & maps with Rothesay P2

We were pleased to receive Task 2 – ‘where is my head?’ from Easter Island.
We had lots of ideas of what we could do to fulfil the task. We decided that we would like to create a 3D map of Easter Island.
We had great fun creating the island using paper and glue to make volcanoes, mountains and rocks. We made sure that there was enough room left so that we could stand some of our clay models on them and we all agree that it looks really effective.

We have enjoyed this task a lot, so we wanted to do more!
We decided that we wanted to make old looking maps – a bit like a treasure map.
We tore round the edges of the paper, after that we drew our map of Easter Island. We then used our knowledge from learning about coordinates and symbols to draw different symbols on the map as well as a compass showing North, South, East and West.
When we were happy we had all the information we wanted on our map, we used a tea bag to stain the paper to give it the authentic look of an old treasure map.
Lots of fun!!!!

For our numeracy work this week, we have been learning all about how to read maps and plot symbols on maps using coordinates. Our Moai head is from Easter Island, so we used a picture of Easter Island to write down coordinates and plot different areas on a map.
Now that our Moai head is in our pre-5 garden we went out to the garden to write down coordinates and plot different areas and items on a map.
We have really enjoyed our Numeracy this week!!

  1. I think the maps look great, very realistic. Have you visited Easter Island using Google Maps? Is there any buried treasure on your maps?
