Small Isles Primary nominated for Community Archives Award

In Spring 2012, Small Isles children became involved in the Crofting Connections Project. During the summer term they invited the community to be involved too by hosting four Crofting Community Cafes in school. Each cafe had a crofting theme (Crofting the land, Life as a child, Crofting Culture and Crofting at Home) and a panel of ‘experts’ from the community were invited to come and share their memories and experiences of the theme by answering questions from the children, leading discussions and having drinks and home-cooked treats.

Academy Award For Port Ellen Primary

‘Scent-Citizens’, run by P4/5 in Port Ellen Primary, is to receive an award from the Social Enterprise Academy. The children in P4/5 have been working diligently over the last few months to set up and manage their own social enterprise business producing soaps and bath bombs. They have been involved in writing their own business plan, creating a company name and logo, designing order forms, invoices and customer feedback froms, making orders for resources, producing soaps and bathbombs, packaging, sales, book keeping and delivery. The Scottish Book Awards

Primary 1 – 3 pupils from Strone Primary School had a very exciting day out in Glasgow on Wednesday 5th March, attending the Scottish Children’s Book Awards at the Mitchell Library. All the pupils at Strone have been reading the shortlisted titles and voted online for their favourites. At the awards, pupils were able to get their own books signed by the authors and watched the ceremony as the winners were announced.
More literacy themed activities were enjoyed on Thursday 6th March when pupils took part in World Book Day and dressed up as their favourite book characters.

Budding Engineers at St Joseph’s!

Last session P5 (now current P6), under the excellent guidance and tuition of class teacher Catherine McLean, entered the Scottish Engineer’s Leaders Award organised by STEM in conjunction with Strathclyde University’s Faculty of Engineering. The project was to create an engineering design for the future and with such a wide remit, the creativity of the children exploded onto the page! The children had to submit a drawing of their design along with a written piece to describe it.

Kilchrenan Wins Rolls Royce Award

Kilchrenan Primary has been selected as a Special Merit Award Winner in the Rolls Royce Science Prize. This award, and a prize of £1000 for science teaching and learning, comes as the result of the school’s focus on science in it’s improvement plan and follows the submission of an action plan after a summer school in the National Science Learning Centre in York. Park Pupils Impress at Burns Event!

A few weeks ago, Primary 7s at Park School entered the Burns competition at the Corran Halls. After weeks of preparation, the pupils took part in different categories and clearly impressed the judges as they returned to Park with 10 medals in total! These were as follows: silver and bronze in Recitation; silver in Solo Singing; gold and silver in Instrumental; gold and bronze in Art; and gold, silver and bronze in Writing in Scots.

Congratulations to our Primary 7s – we are very proud of their achievements!

Tobermory High School & Primary School Celebrate 2nd Green Flag

Tobermory High School 3-18 Learning Community are celebrating being awarded their second Eco Schools Green flag. The eco committee worked hard over the last 2 years to minimise waste, improve the school grounds and keep on top of litter across the campus. The Eco Schools assessor was impressed with the collaborative approach the school has adopted to tackling eco topics, working in conjunction with the Forestry Commission, Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust and the Mull and Iona community Trust.

Dunoon Grammar School Badminton Winners

A number of our pupils took part in the Annual Argyll and Bute Schools badminton championships last week. Our pupils were a credit to Dunoon Grammar School. Their standard of play was exceptional and they returned with a number of titles.

Achaleven Goes Green for the 5th Time

Achaleven Primary School pupils and staff were very proud to receive their 5th Green Flag from Eco-Schools Scotland last week. This follows an assessment at the end of January where Eco-Schools assessor Paula Love commended them on their collaborative approach by working with local environmental organisations including The Grab Trust and AliEnergy, and for the work done in the community by involvement in recycling, village litter picks, charity fundraising and promotion of Fairtrade.

‘Food for Thought’

Lochgilphead Joint Campus has successfully been awarded a £3781 grant from ‘Food for Thought’ – a funding initiative of Education Scotland. The money is being used to build a fully adapted polytunnel, large fruit tree planters and soft fruit growing areas. The aim of the project is to get students involved in growing more produce for the canteen and home economics department and learning how food is produced.

We know how good our school meals are and how much effort the catering staff put into making tasty food which appeals to pupils but also promotes sustainability and healthy eating. It was no surprise therefore that a visit to the kitchen by the Soil Association assessor was instrumental in securing the Bronze Food for Life Catering Mark for the council.

Furnace celebrate their 3rd Green Flag..with FROGS!!!

To mark the achievement of getting their 3rd Green Flag, the children decided on a ‘frog’ themed party to celebrate, as the school mascot is Frankie Frog. On Thursday 30th they played leapfrog, sang ‘frog’ songs, played games and made frogs from fondant icing to sit on chocolate logs. At 3p.m. we were joined by parents and friends for the raising of the flag in the school garden. Ms Rhona McKenzie, the school cook, was asked to raise the flag, alongside our P1 and our P7, as she had been a wonderful help to the children in the garden. After the flag raising everyone came back into school for teas, cake and the frogs on logs!

St. Mun’s On Their Bikes

A group of Primary 7 children at St. Mun’s were recently presented with their well-earned i-cycle certificates at a whole school assembly.
The children who had undergone their training in Term 1, had to demonstrate their ability to ride safely on the road (displaying knowledge of the Highway Code), cycle maintenance and road user awareness, as well as passing a written multiple choice test. Well done everyone.

Dalintober PS Allotment wins ACHA ‘Garden In Boom 2013’ Competition

Dalintober Primary School pupils and staff were delighted to hear that they had been awarded first prize in Argyll Community Housing Association’s ‘Garden In Bloom 2013’ competition. Members of the Mid Argyll & Kintyre Area Committee scored allotments independently and Dalintober’s allotment was judged the best. Members of the Eco-Group, staff and parent and partners have all helped to maintain the allotment, growing a wide range of fruit and vegetables which has been used in school meals and for ‘Green Days’.

DGS: Youth Achievement Award (YAA) Bronze

The YAA is now in its second year at Dunoon Grammar. The Bronze Award is the equivalent of General Standard Grade and is offered to S5/6 pupils who wish to develop skills and qualities useful to them in the future. The YAA involves the members on the group negotiating and planning 4 projects. This session the projects are Teambuilding, Trying New Things, Have Your Say (discussion) and Fundraising.

Congratulations to S4 Int 1 Skills for Work Hair pupil Rachael MacIndeor who competed in Argyll College’s annual hair competition. Rachael came 2nd place in the Hair Up category, competing against both full time and Skills for Work students. She received her certificate at the award ceremony at Argyll College in Oban on Wednesday 18th December

A fantastic achievement. Well done Rachael.

5th Green Flag for Strachur Primary School

Dunoon Grammar School – “Hair-up” Hairdressing Competition

Dunoon Grammar School Hairdressing Skills for Work pupils have recently participated in a “hair-up” competition where every student from 3rd to 6th year took part in creating their very own design of their interpretation of this season’s trends and styles. The students have chosen hairdressing as a school option over a one year or two year course and thought the competition would be a fun way to show off their new skills of plaits, back-combing, curling and much more of what they have been learning from working with their tutor, Honor McCutcheon.

Oban Hoopsters Take the Win!

Oban High School Senior Boys A Team and Junior Girls took the top title in the Argyll & Bute Basketball Tournament held at Atlantic Leisure Centre on Thursday 12 December. Mrs Sharp, the Junior Girls’ and Boys’ team coach, was delighted with the teams’ win. “They have worked really hard to get to the top of their game and this win represents their high level of dedication and skill at basketball.” She added that she is confident the teams will continue to excel at the sport.
