As part of Dunoon Grammar School’s aim to improve attainment and to promote mathematics as a subject that provides enjoyment, a guest speaker, Professor Adam McBride OBE visited Dunoon Grammar School today in order to give a series of talks to selected S1, S3 and Senior pupils. Professor McBride, having taught at the University of Strathclyde for over forty years, has recently retired but still visits schools around the country. He has given countless lectures and masterclasses to pupils from P6 upwards. In 1999 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and was awarded an OBE for services to the understanding of mathematics in schools. Today’s talks generated interest and involvement from pupils and were well received. Problems that have remained unsolved in the maths community were explained along with the importance of maths in everyday life and possible future careers.

Achahoish Primary visits Bank of Scotland
Pupils from Achahoish P.S. had a wonderful visit to the Bank of Scotland in Lochgilphead, on 6th November. They were given a well-planned and very informative tour round the Bank by Lynn and Claire. Both the adults and the children enjoyed the visit and we all learned about the role a Bank plays in keeping money safe.
The most popular area of the Bank was the Safe! Lynn and Claire were very patient and answered all the children’s questions!
Really Small Scientists Win Prizes
Following the Nano-Science workshop in September, Primary 3 and 4 pupils from Dunoon Primary School produced posters about Nano-Jelly. During the workshop, run by the Really Small Science Group from Strathclyde University, the pupils became ‘Really Small Scientists’ for the day and learned about the world of Nano-Science. They discovered how everyday items such as jelly and even their own bodies are made up of tiny nano-sized molecules.

DGS Physics Phenomenons Storm into Semi-Finals
Three senior physics students at Dunoon Grammar School enjoyed success in the first round of the West of Scotland Physics Education Group competition.
S5 pupils Rowan Oxland, Peter Swift and Scott Morton worked on a number of University standard physics experiments before putting their knowledge to the test in a series of quiz style tasks.

Outdoor Learning at Strone Primary
The P1-4 class took their maths lesson outdoors this week, and went in search of brambles. Back in the classroom they used ten and twenty frames to count the brambles and are hoping to collect enough to make some jam!
Gaelic Transition through Local History
Ms Howitt from Dunoon Grammar School initiated a transitional topic for the Gaelic medium pupils of Sandbank Primary School where they could gradually get to know the staff, subjects and building during their last couple of years at Primary. The pupils were already working upon an enquiry based local history project which allowed many opportunities for interdisciplinary work, some of which were suitable for the Grammar staff to lead.
LAB IN LORRY DELIVERS AT DUNOON GRAMMAR SCHOOL
Science lessons with a twist for DGS pupils.
Pupils and visitors to Dunoon Grammar School last week were greeted with a curious addition to the school car park – a science laboratory based in an articulated lorry!
During the week a number of pupils worked in the lorry on a number of physics related experiments. Lab in a Lorry – organised by the Institute of Physics and STEM – is an interactive mobile science laboratory which gives young people the opportunity to explore science through open ended experiments. JLB Maths Challenge Awards!
Ben, Kelci and Rebecca, P7 pupils at John Logie Baird Primary recently collected their prize for the annual Schools Maths Challenge run by Strathclyde University. The pupils all received a Silver Certificate and mug for their high scores in the problem solving challenge at Strathclyde University. The event also had their brains working – the had many challenges to complete which were very thought provoking – even for the adults present!

PORT ELLEN HOLDS FINANCE WEEK FAIR
This week was finance week at Port Ellen and all the classes have been involved in learning about money, finishing in a finance fair on Friday Morning. Primary 1&2 have been learning about banks and spreadsheets, and have even started saving their money up for the summer holidays. They ran a bank at the exhibition and showed they could count change, and had even made their own piggy banks. Primary 2&3 had made commonwealth animal banks, which included a wonderful anteater and Kiwi bank.
Dunoon Grammar School’s Mathematicians
Dunoon Grammar School’s team of four mathematicians from S1 and S2 won 12th place in the UKMT Team Challenge held at the University of the West of Scotland. The team enjoyed competing against 28 other teams from the west of Scotland region. The challenge consisted of four rounds including a cross-number, maths shuttle and an intense relay race. Congratulations to Hazel Oxland, Willow Grieve, Conor Adams and Katie Lambert for an excellent result against some very fierce competition.
