Primary One

Good Morning everyone.  This is a very strange morning for all of you- your teachers too.  You should have received a learning pack last week, this has lots of activities in Reading, Writing, Maths, Numeracy and PE. These activities will take a long time so please only try a few this week.

Our week in P1B

Last week we started to explore symmetry. We created our own symmetrical pictures in lots of different ways.

Last week we also continued to create our own hats for our World Book Day on Friday 9th of March. We talked about our favourite book characters and our reasons for liking these characters and then created our own hats showing this character.

On Friday we  had a task to complete to see if we knew the meaning of lots of words which are disappearing from the language of children. We knew some of these words. Most of us knew what a conker was and some of us gave a great description of an otter. Harris said it’s got a tail and likes water. Zach said it likes to build dams. Aria also knew that a bluebell was a flower with blue petals. Elena was aware that an acorn grew on a tree and Oscar said he knew what a conker was because his brother and him had collected them from a conker tree. We were confused with some words. Although Zach knew what a newt was because he had a pet one, another child said she had a newt bunny! We also thought a dandelion was like a tiger and heather was when you bounced the ball on your head. We were not sure what a bramble was but we’ve heard of a soft play called bramble. No-one knew what ivy was or a lark or willow or a wren. We thought a starling was a star made of wool and a weasel was something to make pictures on. We were really excited when our pupil council rep brought a present to the class from the parent council. When she opened this present we discovered it was a book called The Lost Words. This book will help us to learn what all these words mean. We can’t wait to start learning about these lost words.

snow day activities for P1B

I hope everyone is remaining safe at home.

Remember to add any of your learning at home to twitter. #SPSlovestoread, #SPSsnowday

Some suggested activities for today:

Yesterday on twitter, there was a fabulous photograph of a snow plough made from junk materials from one of children in our class. Last week we were making vehicles in class.

At home you could make another vehicle and bring it into class next week. Remember to draw your plan and make a list of the resources required. You can also post any photographs on twitter.

What books have you been reading? Have you been reading in any interesting places? Remember to post these pictures and complete your reading passport.

P1B

As the school remains closed, I hope everyone is staying safe at home with their parents. Here are a few suggestions of how you can continue your learning at home :

Today is World Book Day

  • How many books can you read today, I wonder which one is your favourite?
  • Look at some of the titles on The First Minister’s Reading Challenge, some of these books are available as ebooks, how many can you read today, in class we really enjoyed the book about Solomon Crocodile, I wonder if you now have a new favourite!
  • Can you make your own book? Staple or stick a few pages together and then decide on your character for your book. Draw lots of pictures on each page to tell a story, if you can, have a go at writing this story, I can’t wait to see your books next week.
  • Can you create a story about a snowy day?
  • Doorway Online is a good resource to practise your sounds, this also helps you to blend the sounds together. Some of our recent sounds have been, ee, oa, oo, w, ch, ng and sh. Can you create words and sentences with these sounds?

I hope the weather improves quickly and it will soon be safe to return to school. I will post more suggestions of ways to continue your learning tomorrow. Remember you can post photographs of snow activities or reading activities on #SPSlovestoread or #SPSsnowday

Snow day activities for P1B

Enjoy your day at home with your family.

As school is closed today you may want to try some activities listed below.

  • our new sound this week was “ch”, you could practise making “ch” with paint, coloured pencils, chalk or pens. You could even go outdoors and write “ch” in the snow.
  • create words and sentences with the “ch” sound.
  • have a look at your new words, which were issued on Tuesday, you could play pairs or snap with these words.
  • in class we’ve been creating hats for World Book Day, you could create another hat or t-shirt at home showing another book character.
  • design and create a bookmark, showing your favourite book character, can you write the character’s name on the bookmark?
  • create a snow creature or sculpture, can you measure it, what will you use to measure it?
  • read your favourite book, you’ll be surprised how many words you can read on your own now.
  • yesterday we were creating number stories for  the number 8, you could make 8 snowballs and use these to create number stories, remember you should be able to make 9 number stories for the number 8.
  • play a board game.
  • use your research skills to look for transport pictures.
  • earlier this term we were looking at the cameras on the motorway to see what was happening to the traffic in Scotland, you can look again, I wonder if this will change throughout the day.
  • try any of the activities listed on the P1 homework grid, issued earlier this term.

World Book Day in P1B

Next week we will be making our own hats in class and decorating these hats with our favourite book characters. Parents don’t need to prepare anything at home but please look out for our photographs of our hats next week.

We also look forward to seeing as many of our children and parents at our “developing our young workplace” showcase event next Thursday evening.

Our ceilidh

In music and in dance, Mrs. Gillies had a Scottish focus this term. Recently Mrs. Gillies invited P1A and P1B to a ceilidh to allow the children the opportunity to show the dances and the songs they have been learning to their teachers.. Mrs. MacLean and Miss Wilson were so impressed to see how many dances and songs that the children could remember.

Learning outdoors

Today we did our maths outdoors. In class we have been  having lots of opportunities to measure. We have been comparing volume, weight and length. We have also been choosing appropriate items to measure objects. Today with our learning partner we built snowmen. Some of us found this really tricky so we changed it to snow towers. After looking at a variety of objects, we choose our cubes to measure our snowmen or snow towers.  After counting how many cubes, we then returned to the class to record our results.

We continued our topic on transport today. After finding out how difficult it had been for some people to travel in their cars today, we looked at the road cameras on different roads around Scotland. We found the M8 motorway close to our school was very busy and the cars were travelling very slowly. We brought snow into the classroom and tried to move our cars on an area with snow and an area without snow.

Orlaith said, it got really stuck on the snow.

Zach- they can’t go as fast when there’s snow.

Happy New Year from P1B

Before Christmas we were very fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from our P7 house captains. The house captains helped us to learn about our school values.

Our P7 buddies also visited us in class and we shared our learning with them. Our buddies also helped us to make new playdough.

This week we have been very excited to have had the opportunity to have a talking/ learning partner in class. Mrs. MacLean selected our partners randomly using our lollipop sticks with our names on them. We will change our partners every week. This week as well as sharing information about Christmas with our partners, we have had opportunities to share learning in phonics, reading, PE and maths with our partner.

Sophie said, my partner got mixed up a little with his reading and I helped him.

Elena, my partner was really good at reading and she helped me.

Finlay- my partner was reading a different book, I liked seeing a different book.

Jenna- we helped each other in the gym hall, we got better after we helped each other.
