Primary 1 – Numeracy

Number Talks

Snack Time

Without counting how many stars does Mrs MacCallum have for her snack?

(* Information For parents – Children might say “I think 10 because I can see 5 and 5 and I know double 5 is 10.” or “I think 10 because I can see 4 and 4 and 2 more which is 10” “They may also say 20 because I know Mrs MacCallum likes to eat chocolate” or something else a bit random. The purpose is to begin to spot patterns that help with quick mental calculations. Children wont always get it correct first time and sometimes will just guess. So spend time together spotting patterns and discussing different ways you can get the correct answer.)

Numeracy – Subtraction

Mrs Macallum – begins to eat her snack. Can you write a number sentence to find the missing amount eaten by Mrs MacCallum?

       _        ?         =

Use your snack or toys  to create subtraction problems for those in your house.

Working a home has it downside Mr MacCallum wants some snack. Can you help Mrs MacCallum share her snack equally?

How could we forget Baby Mac? His bowl is at the ready. Can you share the left over stars equally between 3?

Your turn- Share a given quantity equally of crisps, sweets, lego or building blocks with a parent and or sibling and make a number or letter.

Taking the learning outdoors

Don’t forget to get outdoors and get some fresh air.

Today our outdoor learning activity was collecting leaves from the grass in the back garden. We each had our own bag and  collected as many leaves as we could.  We then counted how many we had in our own bag and then counted how many we collected altogether as a family.

#SPSSnowDay Number 3

Good Morning P6

Despite the bad weather preventing us getting to school, we can still continue our learning at home.

  • You can continue to work on allocated Snow Day activities on Education City.  Why not explore some of the other curricular areas too?
  • You could also log on to Sumdog or play some games on Top Marks for further Maths and Numeracy practise.
  • Continue to read your novels for our First Minister’s Reading Challenge and if you have your passport at home remember to add any books you finish.
  • Find out more about your favourite author – e.g. when and where were they born?;  have they always been an author?;  who or what inspires them to write?;  what other books have they written if any?; what other interests do they have?.
  • Create a poster or factfile with the information you gather.  Why not use ICT and upload your work to Teams or Yammer?

Be creative, use your imagination and have fun!

Don’t forget to upload your photos #SPSLovestoRead, #SPSSnowDay

Snow day activities for P1D

I hope you are enjoying your time at home with your family.

Phonics

  • Our new sound this week was “ch”, you could practise making “ch” with paint, coloured pencils, chalk or pens.
  • Go on a “ch” word hunt around your home or you could even go outdoors and write “ch” and “ch” words in the snow.
  • Create treasure – real “ch” words and trash – made up “ch” words and play your very own game of treasure or trash.
  • Write words and sentences with the “ch” sound.

Today is World Book Day

  • In class the plan this week was to make a World Book Day head band, you could create this at home including drawing of your favourite character
  • How many books can you read today, I wonder which one is your favourite?
  • Look at some of the titles on The First Minister’s Reading Challenge, some of these books are available as ebooks,
  • Can you make your own book? Staple or stick a few pages together and then decide on your character for your book. Draw lots of pictures on each page to tell a story, if you can, have a go at writing this story, I can’t wait to see your books next week.
  • Can you create a story about a snowy day?
  • Remember you can post photographs of snow activities or reading activities on #SPSlovestoread or #SPSsnowday

Another #SPSSnowDay

Happy World Book Day!

All P6 pupils should continue to access the variety of Numeracy, Reading and Spelling activities allocated in the Classwork tab of Education City.  The allocated activities can be accessed by clicking on the Snow Day folders, but please explore some of the other areas of the curriculum and activities too.

Since we are not at school to celebrate World Book Day please also visit the website www.worldbookday.com and try out some of the fun activities on here.

It would also be great to see everyone get a little creative in celebration of the the day and send pictures of you reading somewhere a little different.  We had some great examples in the snow yesterday – can we add some more today?  Why not create something in the snow related to one of  your favourite novels or characters?  Or if you’d rather be warm indoors how about creating a model, painting a picture or even baking and decorating a cake along the theme of your chosen book?

We’d love to see your ideas so don’t forget to tweet #SPSSnowDay #SPSLovestoRead

Learning outdoors

Today we did our maths outdoors. In class we have been  having lots of opportunities to measure. We have been comparing volume, weight and length. We have also been choosing appropriate items to measure objects. Today with our learning partner we built snowmen. Some of us found this really tricky so we changed it to snow towers. After looking at a variety of objects, we choose our cubes to measure our snowmen or snow towers.  After counting how many cubes, we then returned to the class to record our results.

We continued our topic on transport today. After finding out how difficult it had been for some people to travel in their cars today, we looked at the road cameras on different roads around Scotland. We found the M8 motorway close to our school was very busy and the cars were travelling very slowly. We brought snow into the classroom and tried to move our cars on an area with snow and an area without snow.

Orlaith said, it got really stuck on the snow.

Zach- they can’t go as fast when there’s snow.
