Playground Competition

Hello everybody,

I hope you are enjoying spending time with your family this Easter. As you know, we have been working to improve our school playground and have recently had a number of new playground markings/games painted on the ground. Our Parent Council have told us about an amazing competition where we have the chance to win £10 000 to make our playground even better.

Click here and it should direct you to the competition documents. I’d really like you to complete the tasks and ask your parents to submit your competition entry via email to play@creativeplayuk.com by 1st May. I would also ask that you include the school email address (wlsimpson-ps@westlothian.org.uk) in your entries so I can get an idea of the improvements you would like to see. There are quite a few tasks to do so make sure you don’t run out of time!

Creative Play and I want to see what you’re doing, so please ask parents to share your photo on social media tagging @CreativePlayUK, @SimpsonPrimary and the hashtag #playgroundprize. Please make sure your name is not posted alongside your picture due to West Lothian policy. If we get a lot of people using the tags, it will get our school really well known with the company and hopefully improve our chances of winning!

Have fun, get creative and I’m looking forward to seeing your ideas.

Happy Shoesday 22nd May 2018

As detailed in the School Newsletter, Simpson Primary will be taking part in #HappyShoesday on Tuesday 22nd May to celebrate Walk to School Month. Children can wear their favourite shoes/trainers to school (no High Heels please) or they can decorate an old pair of shoes with a happy theme – the more creative, the better! There will be no donations required – all we want is for the children to have a bit of fun and to encourage as many as possible to walk to school.

Thank you for your support.

The Lost Words

As part of our World Book Day celebrations, the Pupil Council delivered a copy of The Lost Words to each class in the school. For those unfamiliar with the book, it is a stunning spell book written by Robert Macfarlane and illustrated beautifully by artist Jackie Morris. It showcases words from our natural world which are no longer included in the Junior Oxford Dictionary due to lack of use (including acorn, conker, dandelion and otter). Before each class received the book, Primary One to Seven engaged in a ‘guess the meaning’ task and it has created quite a buzz. We have been thrilled with the response our posts have had on Twitter – including comments from both author Robert Macfarlane and illustrator Jackie Morris.

As we FINALLY head towards spring (fingers crossed!) our school challenge is to get out into nature and find out about the plants and creatures we have discovered in this fabulous book. Can spot any of them outdoors? Draw them? Make a fact file about them? Get together with a friend and record a news report about them?If you are looking for something to do over the holidays, why not give it a go!

Ask an adult to tweet about it using the #lostwordsSPS @simpsonprimary or comment below.

To quote the wonderful David Attenborough,

Primary 3 Snow Day 3!

Another day and still there’s snow!

Here are some more activities for all of Primary 3 to do today and over the weekend.

If you’ve measured the snow in your garden, have a go at measuring the temperature throughout the day. Can you find somewhere else in the world that has the same temperature? Do they usually have this temperature at this time of year? Can you find out where the coldest place on Earth is today?

This cold weather was called “The Beast from the East” because the cold weather came from the east. Can you draw a  magically weather monster that can create snow, wind and ice!

Polar regions will be our next habitat for our topic (what else!). Can you make a list of what animals live in the polar regions? What animals live in the north, what animals live in the south, and what animals live in both? (Remember ocean dwelling animals too).

Remember to do your homework grid and all the activities included. Clearing the path of snow counts as ‘Helping at Home’!

Read your reading book out loud to an audience of toys. Perhaps you could make your own reading group and do different voices for each toy when its their turn to read.

Remember to keep your World Book Day hat or T-shirt as we’ll be celebrating this next week!
