A busy second morning in P1a!

Despite the rain the boys and girls were delighted to get outside and play with the buddies this morning.  The buddies also helped them to practice lining up smartly – one line for boys and one for girls rather than one big long line.

We were delighted to welcome our music specialist Mrs McWhirter to join us in P1a this morning.  Mrs Mc Whirter knows some of the boys and girls from our nursery class but she was pleased to meet lots of new children too.  We played some singing games and then played some bells and sang a special rain song which has hopefully chased the rain away for the rest of the day! Mrs McWhirter will be teaching us music on Wednesdays this term.

After milk and a story we went for a walk round the school.  After meeting Mrs Robertson and the ladies in the office we popped into the hall and had a quick practice of how we will need to sit for assembly when we go on Friday.  Fortunately because we are P1a we will be sitting in the front row but this means we will also need to sit properly and do good listening as Mrs Robertson and Mr Taylor will be able to see all of us!

Last of all, we said hello to our school cook Mrs Boyd.  She told us that she is looking forward to seeing us all again on Friday for the special P1 lunch and that one of the choices on the menu is pasta bolognaise – delicious!

A busy second last week of term in P2/1!

My apologies for not posting this last week but here is a little update of a few of the things that we have been doing even though it is just about holiday time!

As you may have seen on Twitter we have enjoyed learning about the Scottish artist Steven Brown and were even more delighted that he retweeted our post and obviously some pictures of our art work too.  I’m sure you’ll agree that there could well be some famous artists in P2/1 some day soon! Here a few more of the finished McCoos.

As the weather was nice last week we went outside to do some “wild writing”.  This is part of the outdoor classroom initiative and we were able to write about anything we chose although spiders did seem to feature in quite a lot of the stories.

One of the reading groups was recently reading about a book about World Instruments which included the didgeridoo.  MissMcDermott just happened to have a didgeridoo in her loft so she gave it a good clean and we all had a go at trying to play it. However, it was not as easy as it looked so we did some internet research ( which also said it was fun and easy!!!) and gave it another go.  With a lot of perseverance we finally managed – well, some of us did!

On Thursday some of the P6a buddies game to our classroom to join us in playing a variety of maths games.  We have been practising telling the time and money skills throughout the year and these are something that ideally we need to keep practising over the holidays. We would like to say a big thank you to the buddies for all their help this year!

P2/1 celebrate 50 years of LPS!

This  week we have enjoyed lots of birthday celebrations including sharing our learning about 1967 – the year our school opened at Preston Road.  Thank you very much to everyone who came along on Wednesday evening and well done to the tour guides who certainly seemed to have learned lots!

Today the children looked fantastic in their 1960s costumes. They enjoyed the 1960s disco which was organised by P7a.  The class did not go together today but with their P1 or P2 peer group which they seemed to enjoy.

After a very busy day we enjoyed some ginger beer (a favourite of Enid Blyton!) and a little piece of Mr Kipling cake ( first sold in 19671) to toast “Happy 50th Birthday!” to Linlithgow Primary School.

P2/1 and P6a – Outdoor Classroom Day

This afternoon P2/1 and P6a celebrated Outdoor Classroom Day by taking part in a joint scavenger hunt around the school grounds.  The theme was weight and measure which is the focus for P2/1 maths learning at the moment.  The children had a long list of things to find and do – some of them much trickier than others! Here are just some of the photographs.

Brown paper packages tied up with string…

On Friday morning, P5A received an intriguing package, wrapped in brown paper and tied up with string.

We spent some time handling our mystery parcel and discussing it. We wondered where it had come from, why it had been sent to us and, most importantly, what might be inside.

After waiting and wondering for three long days, we finally opened our parcel this afternoon. There was great excitement, lots of speculation, and some worry (from Mrs Paton) that Robert might cut his fingers on the scissors!

At last, the box was open. Buried inside layers of tissue, we pulled out…a tiny felt hat, covered in sequins and embriodery.

Most excited of all was our Circle Time pet, Happy Lion. He was delighted to find that the hat was a perfect fit!

We quickly set about writing down all of our big questions about this unusual hat. Where did it come from? Who sent it to us? What sort of hat was it? Which culture did it belong to? What could we learn from it?

We visited the school library and consulted Dr Google. Our suspicions were confirmed. We had received a tiny sombrero all the way from Mexico. We discovered that the name ‘sombrero’ comes from the Spanish word for shade. This wide brimmed hat was originally designed to offer protection from the sun.

Next, we discussed where we could take our learning from here. Would we design and make our own hats? Would we find out more about the traditions, customs and traditional dress of Mexico? Would we explore politics, religion or culture? Could we write our own music, or find out about traditional Mexican musical instruments? Could we explore different types of hats? Perhaps we could write our own poetry, adventure stories or factual reports about hats. We even discussed the possibility of learning a new language or writing to new pen pals.

So, where to begin? P5A, it’s over to you!

P2/1 Cows Jumping Over the Moon amongst other things!

This morning we were very fortunate to have Mrs Lowe, one of our parent helpers, in class.  She helped us plant nasturtium seeds whilst Miss McDermott worked with the maths groups.  We learned that nasturtiums are unusual because you can eat their flowers! We know from Mr Hogg that we will need to water our seeds carefully and we are going to have a rota for doing this.

After break we wrote instructions for planting seeds and discussed how instructions are another kind of non fiction text.

In the afternoon, we learned about another Scottish inventor.  Here are a few of the pictures that we have drawn so far.

Then we worked with a partner for today’s challenge – to try and make a cow jump over the moon!  We had lots of fun trying to make catapults and pinging toy farm animals all over the classroom!  Like many of the challenges we do it was not easy but we are getting much better are not giving up and helping each other to do our best.

Each child will only speak at one of these assemblies and I will inform you nearer the time which one that will be.

 Weds 29 Mar

Easter activity afternoon – this will be a similar format to Halloween afternoon – a mixture of craft and games including hopefully some outdoor activities. Adult helpers required 1.15 -3.20pm.

 Help! Big Scarecrow Team Challenge

I am planning a team challenge with the assistance of Mr Ross and Mr Fagin our school janitors which hopefully will take place just after Easter and will conclude our farm topic.

As part of this we will need to collect old (adult) clothes and newspapers which will be used to make 2 life size scarecrows.  Any materials that we do not use will be recycled in line with us being an eco school.  These can be sent in at any time along with anything else that you think might be useful for scarecrow making!

Adult helpers will be needed for this challenge but I am not quite sure of dates and times at the moment.

Thank you to everyone for your continuing support and please remember if you have questions, queries or indeed good ideas – come and speak to me!
