Sportshall Athletics East Regional Championships

On Wednesday, 20 members from our P7 class took part in the Sportshall Athletics East Regional Championships at the Jack Kane Centre in Edinburgh. This is where the top two schools from City of Edinburgh, East Lothian, Midlothian, West Lothian and the Borders take part in activities which include: 4 x 100m, over/under relay, obstacle relay, 6 lap parlauff, 2 lap relay, 1 lap relay, javelin, speed bounce, long jump, vertical jump, triple jump and chest push.

Our team placed 8th overall. Kirknewton Primary finished 10th which means although we were not crowned Champions on the day, we are the top performing school out of 67 in West Lothian. Another fantastic achievement. On the day our children demonstrated resilience, perseverance, motivation and superb sportsmanship. We cheered on the winners and all the other competitors and enjoyed a really great event.

This will start on Tuesday 20th February.

Our school handball team took part in the final round of fixtures of the Livingston Handball league. I am very proud to announce that our school are the Livingston Champions!!! Well done team. Snowy Science!

Today P5 thought they would enjoy the snow and put a science based twist onto their fun. The children worked in groups to come up with some snowy science questions and the recorded their predictions. We then put our coats, boots and gloves on and headed outiside.

Questions for investigation included ……Does paint make snow melt quicker? How many drops of cold water does it take to melt a snowball? Will a snow tower collapse before a snow bridge? And hitch melts a mound of snow quicker, hot water or cold water.

Lots of discussion about the questions, making experiments fair and then comparing results with predictions.

Enjoy the snow folks!

Burns Poetry Competition

The children have chosen the poem that they would like to recite for this years competition. They have all been given a copy and told to keep it safe!

Can I ask that the children have their poem ready for recital to the class for Monday 22nd January, as the class will be voting for the best 3 competitors to reach the Final.

I have included links to the poems in case they lose their copy, or forget to take it home.

Any questions then please let me know.

Happy New Year

Welcome back to Primary 5, they seem to have had a brilliant holiday!

Today it was my turn to bring something for Show and Tell…

Mrs Warrender!!!

Mrs Warrender came to visit the school, before she returns to Australia in a couple of weeks. The children were so excited and had lots of fantastic questions to ask her. Questions included ….Have you been bitten by any insects? Have you seen any crocodiles? What is you favourite Australian animal that you have seen? and What is your house like?

We will try and keep in touch with Mrs Warrender and maybe we can email her and ask about the learning the children do in Australia!

Lego Challenge 2 – update!

Yesterday we designed and made some amazing marble mazes using our Lego blocks. Lots of collaboration, problem solving and testing of designs were carried out! The children thoroughly enjoyed the activity and these STEM challenges are proving very popular in P5!

Here are some pictures of the children testing each other’s designs.

Ask the children about the roles given during Lego Challenges and the rules they need to follow to ensure the challenge is successful!

Well done P5!
