P1 Weekly Reflection 13.9.19

In Primary One this week we have been learning the sounds and n.  We have begun to build words with the sounds we have learnt so far (m, a, d, t, s, i, n), perhaps you could practise building some words at home?

In numeracy we have been learning about the numbers 8 and 9.  We have been counting lots of objects around the classroom and we have been forming our numbers in the sand, showing teddy how to write them on whiteboards and making them with playdough.  We have also been singing and dancing to some number songs, perhaps you’d like to have a listen at home! Here’s a few links:

In our topic work we have been developing our understanding of families and in particular, babies.  We would like to give a very special welcome from all of P1 to Isla’s new sisters, Freya and Emmie.  We hope to meet you very soon.

This week we also watched Jessie and Friends where we learned what to do if we are watching videos online and we see something that we don’t like and gives us a funny feeling in our tummy.  We know that we must tell an adult who will help to make it go away.

Have a lovely holiday weekend and I look forward to seeing the children back in school on Wednesday.

P1’s weekly reflection 6.9.19

Another busy week in Primary 1. This week we have been learning the sounds and t.  Now we know m, a, s, d and t we have begun to build some simple words.  It would be good if you could practise looking for these sounds at home and when you are out and about in the local environment.

In our numeracy this week we have been learning the numbers 6 and 7 and have been learning the days of the week.  There are lots of songs on Youtube to help the children learn their numbers and days of the week, have fun singing these together at home.

This week the children have shown a great interest in playing mummies and daddies in the house corner so we have begun to look at learning about Our Families and have talked about diversity and how everyone’s family is different.

In PE we have been developing our listening skills as we learned to follow instructions while playing a game with partners.

Here are some of the children’s comments about their learning this week:

Elise “I liked playing in the house corner with Nieve and being a mummy and I liked drawing.”

Georgie ” I liked playing doctors and playing with Penelope and Sahasra. I liked playing with every single person in the playground.”

Sophie ” I liked learning and playing with Eva.”

Ruby ” I liked playing doctors with Penelope.”

Penelope “I liked playing tag outside with Georgie and Ruby.”

Elloise “I liked playing doctors in the house corner and drawing.”

P1 Weekly Update 30.08.19

Our first full week in Primary One has been fun but tiring!  We have been learning lots of new things and everyone is settling in nicely to the new Primary One routines.  This week in our literacy we have been learning the sounds m, a and s.  We looked for these letters in the sand, we made them out of playdoh, practised forming them at the writing table and told teddy how to write them.

In our number work we have been learning the numbers 0-5 and we are becoming really good at counting forwards and backwards.  Next week we will move on to numbers to 10.

We have been learning about staying safe while crossing the road and talked about how to use a zebra crossing, an underpass and the Green Man to help us.  We have been using Go Safe With Ziggy, check it out at home using the following link: https://roadsafety.scot/learning/go-safe-with-ziggy/road-safety-awareness/.

We have settled in quickly to the lunchtime routines and many of us have been enjoying the school dinners and going out to play with our buddies.

Thanks to all the parents who have remembered to name their children’s belongings, it has made returning misplaced items so much easier.

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you all on Monday.

P3 Weekly Update

Last week we were developing our understanding of telling the time using analogue and digital clocks.  We learned to tell the time in 5 minute intervals and we all know that there are 60 minutes in an hour and 24 hours in a day.  We also learned that AM refers to the morning and PM refers to times after 12noon and before midnight.

In literacy, we were learning the spelling rules for adding ‘ing’ to words to make present tense verbs.  In writing we started thinking about the features of an adventure story and we began to plan out characters for our own adventure stories.

We has a visit from the SSPCA and we learned about looking after rabbits by taking part in the Rabbit Rescuers workshop.

The children have now completed their Bikability Training and are looking forward to practising riding their bikes over the summer.  Mrs Hill is hoping to take the children on a cycle ride around the village at the beginning of Primary 4.

P3 Weekly Reflection 27.5.19

Last week while Mrs Clyne was at P7 Cluster Camp, Primary 3 worked hard with Mrs Fraser and Mrs Stewart.

Here are some of the children’s highlights:-

Olly “On Thursday we made spiders and frogs out of paper.”

Luke N “Miss Greig came in and taught us 3D shapes.”

Lakshya “We went into the back garden to find some shapes.”

Jarrad “On Friday we had Bikeability which I am enjoying.”

Ethan “We went outside for PE and Mr Keast got us to run about to see how exercise affects our heart.”

Joe “On Tuesday, Mrs Fraser took us outside for PE and we were developing our running technique.”

Weekly Update 13.05.19

Since we last posted we have been learning about speech marks in literacy.  We have been identifying speech marks in our books and also adding these to sentences to punctuate them correctly.  In spelling we have learning to understand the oa/ow sound and have discussed when to use each spelling.  In writing we have begun to look at writing a description and were encouraged to think about using the literacy bubble to add more detail to our writing.

In maths we have been learning about money and talking about different ways to make given totals.  We talked about how to write amounts correctly using the ‘£’ and ‘p’ signs.  We have also been trying to solve problems which involve money.

In Health and Wellbeing, we have been talking about the different stages of the human life cycle and we thought about why we have different nutritional requirements at these different stages.

With Mrs Stewart we have been learning the technique of paper folding which is called origami.  Some of the animals we have made include a whale, a cat and a caterpillar.  In drama we have been reading stories about pirates and we have been making pirate hats and acting out the stories.

The children have enjoyed several assemblies over the past few weeks including one from P6 about their residential and one from P7 about sport.  Mrs Mill lead an assembly about ‘Respecting yourself’ and the children have been thinking about their own special skills and qualities that make them unique (we are looking forward to seeing the homework sheets when they are returned on Wednesday).

Lastly, we have been writing comic strips as part of the ‘Oor Wullie’s Big Bucket Trail’ project which we are involved in.  The whole school had to write a comic strip and two people were chosen from each class to have their comic strips stuck onto our ‘Oor Wullie’ sculpture.  In Primary 3 the children who were lucky enough to be chosen were Emma F and Sophie.  Photos of the completed sculpture will be posted soon.

P3 Window into Learning Term 4

We are all set for our final term of Primary 3 and it’s going to be a busy one!  Can you believe the children are only 8 weeks away from the end of P3.  They say time flies when you’re having fun and we have lots more fun and learning to do before the end of session.  Have a look at our Window into Learning to see what our focus will be for the term ahead!

P3 Weekly Reflection 29.4.19

What a busy first week of term it was!  We had several visitors in school last week and the children enjoyed all of the interesting information they had to share with us.  The PDSA came to share a whole school assembly and an exciting project was launched by Jacqueline from the Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity.  The school will be taking part in Oor Wullie’s Big Bucket Trail and we have to decorate a statue of Oor Wullie.  All children will contribute towards this over the coming week by drawing their own comic strip of Oor Wullie and his adventures.  The statue will then be returned to the Charity to be added to the trail which we will all be able to take part in over the summer holidays.  We are all very exicted.

Last week saw the closing date of the Young Writer’s Poetry Patrol Competition and we are now all eagerly awaiting the publication of the book so we can see all our hard work in print.

Some of the children’s highlights are as follows:-

Olly enjoyed learning how to make an origami caterpillar.

Luke N and Freya enjoyed listening to Emma from the PDSA telling us about Canine Communication.  Jarrad enjoyed the whole school assembly where the children learned more about pets.

William said he enjoyed learning a new game in PE, Team Dodgeball.

Lots of the children enjoyed the assembly from Jacqueline at the Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity.  She introduced us to Oor Wullie and launched Oor Wullie’s Big Bucket Trail.

Kayden enjoyed when we did number talks and Mr Valentine came to watch.

Finn liked when we learned about money.

Teme and Harris Si enjoyed when the class were learning about rounds in Music.  Mrs Stewart said they were very quick to pick up how to sing a round and Mrs Clyne agreed that the children did very well to learn how to sing in a two-part round in only one day.

P3 Weekly Reflection 15.02.19

This week we were practising our spelling words using plasticine and art straws, it was not as easy as some of the children made it look!  We have been learning about Magic ‘e’ and how it changes the sound of a vowel from it’s sound to it’s name.  I wonder how many examples of magic ‘e’ words the children will be able to tell you?

In maths we have been learning about halves and quarters.  We know that a quarter is half of a half and we talked about the numerator and denominator, tricky words but we are becoming more confident about what these mean!

In our topic work we have begun to look at key dates in the life of Ancient Egyptians and we talked about why the River Nile was so important to the Egyptians.  We are looking forward to learning about hieroglyphics and the process of mummification in the next few weeks.

In P.E. we have begun to work on gymnastics and we have been practising our jumping and rolling this week.  The star shaped forward roll using the springboard was a definite hit!

Here’s some of the children’s highlights:-

Luke C “I enjoyed when we did Humpty Dympty in different voices in Drama.  I also like when the nursery sang Baby Shark.”

Joe “I liked doing rolls and especially the star jump forward roll in gymnastics.”

Rohan “I liked doing homophones with Mrs Stewart.”

William “I also liked the homophones.”

Kalista “I enjoyed learning about Egypt when we were learning about the timeline of important events.”

Have a lovely holiday weekend and I look forward to hearing all the children’s news on Wednesday.
