P7 Week 2

This week we have been thinking about our mindset for learning. We have been working on some positive thinking and how to change what we say to be more open to new things. For example “I can’t do it.” becomes “I can’t do it yet.” or “I’m not as good as she is.” becomes “She is good at this, maybe she can help me.”

We have also been looking at our rights and have learned many more that we didn’t know about before.

We have elected our Pupil Council representatives for the year and they are Ben and Elise. The great thing was that 8 people went for it and some had to overcome lots of nerves to stand up and say their bit. I am very proud of them.

During our reflection time this week there was a common theme around applications for House Captains and Sports Captains.

Holly – Writing my Sports Captain speech was so hard. I couldn’t decide what to say.

Emmie – I had so many things to say in my House Captain speech and it was hard to decide which ones to keep so it didn’t go on too long.

Kaitlyn – The House Captain speech was hard to write because I’ve never done anything like that before.

Katie – I feel like in my writing I don’t use big words but I did in my speech for Sports Captain and in my poem too. I am getting better at writing.

Harry – I did better than I thought I would in the basketball trials. I enjoyed writing my House Captain speech even though it took me about 4 times to get it right.

Well done P7. Your willingness to give things a go is most impressive, and also I love the way you don’t just accept ‘good enough’ and always try to improve. That’s growth mindset in action.

Welcome to P7

What a lovely week I have had with our new P7s. They have been so much fun and have come back to school with great enthusiasm for the year ahead.

Today we have been reflecting on how the week has gone and as you will see from the comments below, the pupils feel that they have also had a good start to the term.

“I think I’ve settled in really well to P7 but I think it’s going to be harder in the year. I’ve enjoyed spending time with my buddy at break and lunch because we have had a lot of fun.” – Ben M

“Settling in to P7 has not affected me but I’m happy to see my friends. The thing I am looking forward to most is visiting The Risk Factory.” – Harry

“I think I have settled in at Primary 7. I still sometimes nearly go into the P6 classroom but I mostly know. I am looking forward to trying  out for all the different teams and house captain! Also to improve in all subjects.” – Tyler

“I feel that I have settled in quite well in primary 7 because I’m just really excited for this year. I have enjoyed PE this week because I have never played rock, paper, scissors like how we played it on Wednesday. I am looking forward to the school play because I will probably go for a bigger part this time.” – Elise

“I think I have settled in well in P7. It just feels kinda natural. I have enjoyed PE the most as a subject this week. I love the P7 corner. I am looking forward to the school play because I love singing and acting.” – Eleni

So far, so good for P7.

Pupils should be thinking about whether they would like to be house captains or not. Please encourage your child to go for it if they are not sure. A copy of the success criteria is attached below.

Presentation Success Criteria

2 weeks of P7 left!

Another hectic week this week, and that’s how it will be for the last 2 weeks too.

Another raffle prize was claimed today so we had a pyjama day. I wish I could do this all the time!

Lots of pupils visited JYHS this week for transition and they didn’t want to come back to LVPS.

“It was really good to make new friends.” – Holly

“The best bit was making new friends. I was a bit worried about that before but it was OK.” – Briony

“We got to light bunsen burners in science and we mixed liquids so they changed colour then we put them in a filter and the liquid came out clear and the yellow was left on the paper. It was so good.” – Eilidh

Don’t forget P7 have their leavers’ assembly on Friday morning at 9:15 – they think you should bring your hankies!

P7 Board Games Afternoon

Well done to all the P7s who won prizes for the class at the Fun Day on Saturday. There are so many events to fit in to our already busy timetable. After some negotiation, it was decided that today would be the day for the Board Games Afternoon, and also to use one of the music during class vouchers. Here are some photos from the afternoon.

Weekly update…

I can’t believe this is the last month of this session and in only 4 weeks time your children will have finished at primary school. The year has flown by and the children have grown so much!

Monday was Miss Lenathen’s last day with us. She had a fabulous time and the pupils were feeling really sad to see her go. We wish her well for next year in her first year as class teacher.

The week has been very quiet compared to the last few, giving us a chance to revise some of the maths and literacy that we covered months ago.  We have been working on basic numeracy skills, multiplying in particular.

The weather has been kind and we have been able to go outside for PE and for our reading. That has been lovely.

The latest Sumdog competition has started today and finishes next Thursday. It is for West Lothian schools only, so we are really going for it this time. Pupils all have log-ins and can play at home.

On Monday we will start a block of Outdoor Learning with Mrs Murdoch. Pupils will be outside no matter the weather, so please ensure they have sensible shoes and raincoats if the forecast isn’t good.

So, there goes another very busy week for P7…

As well as Inveralmond CHS transition on Wednesday – Friday, pupils had to fit in West Lothian Netball Championships and Athletics Championships.

All our routines and timetables have changed due to all these events, and well done to pupils for managing to keep going. It can be really difficult to keep up when everything is changing. Even for those not involved in the big events this week, things have been very different.

Well done to our sports teams as they have done very well representing the school, some even bringing home medals. Mr Stewart has all the information on our twitter feed.

This week our main focus in class was debating. This builds on our learning about how things work at The Scottish Parliament, and links to our current block of non-fiction writing. Topics so far have been about the World Cup and driverless cars. It has been great to see how carefully the pupils have listened and responded to each other. They are all improving in their use of rhetorical questions and counter-argument.

Another hectic week for P7!

P7 have hardly stood still this week. Some pupils have had a successful sports transition day at high school, making lots of new friends already even though they were nervous at the start. The formal transition process is building up pace next week for pupils who will be attending Inveralmond CHS as they will be spending 3 days there  – don’t forget to download the Google Expedition app before you go!

Several pupils had a great new experience at the West Lothian Triathlon yesterday. They enjoyed it very much even if cycling in a dripping wet swimming costume was a bit weird!

In class, pupils have continued to learn about area in maths, pilgrimages in RME – focussing on the Western Wall in Jerusalem this week, and ways to generate electricity in science. Pupils have been working on functional writing and using their experiences of building wind machines to write instructions.

ICHS Transition

As part of a transition project for P7 pupils who are attending ICHS, we have been asked if the pupils could download an app called Google Expeditions onto their smartphones. This will be used with Virtual Reality headsets as part of their work in English, Maths and Social Studies.

Thank you,

Mrs Sansom

This (short but busy) Week in P7

What a whirlwind few days it has been. Miss Lenathen has been squeezing in lessons in between all the other activities, including practising for our assembly today. Thank you to the parents who attended and for their positive comments and feedback.

The highlight of the week had to be our visit to The Risk Factory. The class have been continuing to reflect on the scenarios they encountered and on what they would do better/more safely next time. It is a great learning experience for P7 pupils as they begin to be more independent and venture further afield. Thankfully, at The Risk Factory, they are allowed to make risky decisions in a safe environment – was your child one of those who went onto the railway line to get a £20 note, or did they run back into a burning building?

Just a reminder for pupils that the latest Sumdog National Competition started today, and that all pupils have been entered. It is easy to log on and join in from home. As soon as they start answering questions it will count towards our school total.
