‘The Perfect Fit’

It’s Maths Week! So in Drama this week we listened to ‘The Perfect Fit’  by Naomi and James Jones. We really enjoyed the story and used our bodies to try and make different shapes.

Poor Triangle tries hard to fit in with the other shapes but she  knows  they are not the same. She is searching for a group where she fits in perfectly.

We explored shape, patterns and tiling using lots of different objects.. counters, cubes, dice, pebbles, pompoms and even real tiles!

The story helped us learn about shapes but also about how we are all different and the importance of  being included.

Maths Week in The Hive

We have enjoyed learning new Maths and Numeracy skills in a variety of ways during Maths Week! Some of the activities we did are :

Making 2d shapes using our geoboards and describing each shapes properties.

Using 3d shapes to make a rocket.

Making shapes using sticks in the woods.

Counting each bubble as we pop them.

Counting in 2’s, 5’s or 10’s as we pop each bubble.

Using jigsaw puzzles and Smartboard games to learn about shape and numbers.

P3a Money

This week we have been trying hard to improve our work with money.  We used games on the iPad, coins in class, a class shop and challenge cards.

I am learning the value of coins.

We are playing shops to check we can lay out the correct coins to buy something.

We are playing games on the iPad to show we know how to use coins to pay for things.

P3a Maths Week Activities

A mysterious box was left in our classroom this morning. We tried to think what might be. When we opened it, it was filled with triangles. We looked at them and discussed what was the same and what was different. Then we heard a story about triangles. Next we split into groups and took part in different activities.

At Base 1 we were using 2d shapes to create a picture and then tried to name all the shapes we had used.

At Base 2 we were using construction to build 3d shapes. We then thought where we might see them in the world.

At Base 3 we were working on our money by setting up a shop and buying different items.

At Base 4 we logged onto our Sumdog accounts and worked on our Maths online.

P3B Learn About Money Through Play

In P3B, we love Numeracy and Maths. We take part in Numeracy every day and on Tuesdays, we focus on our Maths Topic. “Money” is our Maths topic this term and we have been learning through play.

Miss Marra gave us a selection of coins and we worked with our learning partners to answer these questions:

What do you notice?

What do you wonder?

We had lots of questions about the coins and notes. We all recognised the bank cards and could talk about times when we had seen family members use these to pay for items. We had a class discussion about how most people use Apple Pay or bank cards to pay for items nowadays. During this discussion, we realised that it is still important to learn how to add coins to help us understand the value of money. This will help us to pay for things and budget when we are older.

We started using the money in different ways depending on our interests. Some of us collected one particular type of coin and added them together. Some of us started ordering the coins from smallest to biggest. We noticed that the largest coins are not always the highest in value. Some of us started adding the coins and showing Miss Marra the different values we can make. This then started the ball rolling with a different discussion. How much can we make with the coins?

We were confident sharing our learning with each other. We have photos on our Maths and Numeracy wall with examples of the discussions that took place. We are very excited for our parents and carers to see this on Parents Evening.

Relax and Read in Primary 3B

In P3B, we love our “Mindfulness Moment” after lunch every day. This is our ten minutes of quiet time where we choose to read, draw, use play dough or build a model with construction. We have started taking part in “Relax and Read” once a week during Mindfulness Moment. This is when we find a comfy spot in the classroom with a book to read for enjoyment.

Miss Marra took photos for our reading display and she asked us to explain what we love most about reading. Here are some of our responses:

I love reading because I love to learn new words.

I love reading because it is relaxing and it helps my brain.

I like reading because I like looking at the pictures.

I like reading because I like to learn new facts. I like non-fiction books.

Ranger Service Visit P6

We were lucky enough to have a visit from The West Lothian Ranger Service this week. This was an environmental workshop which engaged the class by running a range of nature inspired games to help them understand the community and environment around them. We started with a mapping activity where we saw an aerial shot of East Calder taken by a satellite. It was interesting to discuss what our access rights were to the land that surrounds us and how by following a few simple rules it will allow us all to assist in managing our natural heritage whilst also enhancing biodiversity.

Primary 1

It has been a busy few days in Primary 1.  We continue to learn our phonics and have now completed the first set (s, a, t, i, p, n).  We have been finding objects that begin with these sounds, playing ‘I hear, with my little ear’.

We continue to work with numbers to 10 and have been finding missing numbers on a number track.

We have also been able to meet with our Buddies, play in the classroom and enjoy stories in the school library.
