Earth Day Fun for P2W

Good morning everyone,

I hope you all had a lovely Easter holiday with your family doing lots of fun activities.

Today is a very special day in the calendar called ‘Earth Day’. This year is even more special as it is the 50th anniversary. Below are some links for fun and interactive resources to give you more information about Earth Day.  Have fun doing some of these activities.

Missing you all,

Miss Walkingshaw

P2M Science with Mrs Beattie

We look forward to Science with Mrs Beattie every Tuesday and this term, we have been learning about materials. One of our favourite learning activities was when Mrs Beattie asked us to use different materials to build a bridge. We had to work collaboratively to decide which materials worked best and why. We used what we know about the properties of different materials to make decisions in our groups. Mrs Beattie was very impressed with the learning conversations that were taking place. We were proud to use all the collaborative skills we have learned in class to work as a team. We listened well to each other’s ideas and we made sure everyone took part in the challenge.

P2M Learning Update

We have been so busy with all our learning in Primary 2M! We have decided to blog more often so we can share all our hard work with everyone. We would also like to blog with Miss Marra so we can share how we feel about our learning.

In Literacy, we have been working hard to learn our sounds. These are the sounds we have recently been learning: au, aw, ew, nk, ng, st, ft and mp. This week, we are learning to read and write words ending with rk, nd and lt. Some of us are also learning to sound out and blend CVC words. One of our favourite learning activities in Literacy is Hangman on a white board. We enjoy learning to recognise the sounds in our words with a partner. We are also enjoying our target task because we can challenge ourselves and learn to complete a pencil activity independently.

One of our highlights of the term so far is our Topic on The Romans. We have already learned so much about Gladiator battles, Roman soldiers and life as a Roman child. One of our favourite learning activities was using paper to make a Roman fort and a Colosseum. We also learned about the toys Roman children used to play with and we found it very interesting that they often made their own toys. We worked independently or with a partner to make our own Roman toys. We made toys including figures, dolls, kites, swords, shields and toy cars.

Roman children played with many toys that we enjoy playing with. However, we were shocked to learn that Roman children were not taught about gender equality. Girls were encouraged to play with dolls and boys were encouraged to play with swords and shields to practise for future battle. We know girls and boys can play with the same toys, do the same jobs and be anything we want to be. This helped us to understand more about how different life was in Roman times. We are looking forward to learning more.

P2W Science Fun with Mrs Beattie

During our Science lessons this term we have been learning about different materials. Mrs Beattie set us a challenge to try and build our very own bridges using different materials.

Each group were given the choice between spaghetti and blue tac or cubes.  By the end of the lesson we were to create our own bridges using our chosen material followed by an explanation as to which method was better and why.

We are looking forward to learning even more about materials over the course of this term!

Literacy Fun In Primary 2W

This week we have been learning how to use a dictionary. We learnt when we would need to use a dictionary and how to use it correctly. Before we could do this we completed BBC Supermovers Alphabet dance to double check we could remember the letters in the correct order.

Miss Walkingshaw set us a challenge in pairs to see if we could find the real meaning behind words we use a lot during our learning. We had lots of fun taking part in this challenge as we were able to do it with our friends. Some of the words were tricky to find but we showed our resilience and kept on trying!

As you can tell we liked it so much we had to take another photograph to show you our smiling faces!

Roman Creations in P2W

Today we had been learning even more information about the Romans. This afternoon we were lucky enough to learn about the Colosseum and had a chance to create our own.

We were set a task to create our own Colosseum using only one material from the list below:

  • Building Blocks
  • Lego
  • Paper
  • Counting Sticks

We have been focusing on teamwork over the past few weeks and we were able to show how good we are at this during the task.

Here is some of our amazing work.

We are very proud of all our hard work!

Book Week in P2M

We have had a very busy and exciting book week! One of the highlights was when we shared our learning with our families and friends on Thursday. We also really appreciate all the feedback from parents and carers which is on display in our cloakroom. Another highlight was decorating our door to celebrate “George’s Marvellous Medicine” by one of our favourite authors, Roald Dahl.

We are very proud of all our hard work. All Miss Marra did was print the letters and she helped us put all our work on the door. We did all the other work ourselves. A huge thank you to our two super stars Esmae and Cooper for drawing George and Grandma. Thank you also to Farah for helping with colouring Grandma. We have our fingers crossed that our hard work pays off when the winning door is announced on Monday. However, as Carson so wisely stated, “it is all about having fun and trying our best” and we definitely did. Well done Primary 2M!

P2W Book Week

This week we took part in Book Week Scotland 2019. We were set many challenges to try and complete during our literacy time.

P2W chose to recreate the front cover of one of our favourite books – Charlie and The Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. We worked so hard creating this that it took us one whole week! We are very proud of all the hard work, effort and teamwork that has went into our amazing door creation.

We have all our fingers and toes crossed in the hope that we win the competition on Monday!

P2M and P2W Notice Board

Dear Parents/Carers,

In P2, we have been learning the sh, th, ch, wh and qu sounds in Phonics. We are now learning the ai and ay sound (e.g. paint, play) and some pupils have been practising CVC words (e.g. mat, jug, lid). Please support your child to read and write sounds with these words at home.

The children now all have tricky words to practise at home. Please support your child to read and write these words and they will be updated on  regular basis to meet the needs of your child. This task will also regularly be included on the homework grid.

P2M and P2W Sharing the Learning will take place on Monday 2nd December 2019 from 2pm -3pm. You will receive a letter over the next few weeks with more details about this event.

Please also ensure that your child brings their reading book and yellow diary to school every day to allow them to fully participate in learning activities with their group.

Thank you for your continued support.

Miss Marra and Miss Walkingshaw
