Maths and Book Week in The Hive

This week is Scottish book week.  We discussed our favourite types of books and a common theme was Space! In Maths this week we have been learning about money.  We have been recognising and adding the value of coins, and some of us managed to work out change too!  We linked our maths with our book week chats and tried to work out how much it would cost us to go into Space.  We then did some role play and acted out us being in a space rocket.

Primary 1

This week Primary 1 have been learning all about 2D shape.  We named the shapes and used them to make shape pictures.  Some of us went outside for a Shape Hunt and we used things we found to create our own shapes.  Others took turns to use the feely bag, and, without looking, describe what the shapes were.

We continue to learn new sounds, this week o and u.  We have also been practising our Fry’s words.  Please remember to return reading books on Thursdays.  We have a limited number of books and we want everyone to be able to bring a book home weekly.

Our science learning in class is all about the weather and we have been using symbols to record the weather.  On Thursdays Mrs Beattie is in class for science and children have been learning about night and day.  This week they made sundials.

Primary 1a & b

Last week Primary 1 completed our leaning of the second set of phonics (ck, e, h, r, m, d).  These sounds will be included in reading bags going home tomorrow.  In numeracy we have been adding within 5 and learning the number bonds.  In class we have been reading the number sentences using the maths vocabulary previously shared on Seesaw.

We have begun to learn about our weather and are observing and recording the weather in a chart this week.

We enjoyed dressing up for Halloween and today went to the hall and had fun singing and dancing to Halloween songs.

Learning in P2/1

We have been learning about our bodies. We have been taking part in experiments to learn how we use our senses.

We did a ‘smell test’ to see if we could tell what was in the cup.
‘My favourite was the hot chocolate because it reminds me of the hot chocolate I get at home. My Mum makes it with marshmallows’. Belle

P1 created these super glasses when learning about the sense of sight, and P2  labelled the parts of an eye.

We had fun learning about the brain, lungs and heart. We placed the organs in the correct places on our body outline.

We’re really looking forward to presenting our learning at our assembly this week.

Primary One PE – Tennis

Our primary one pupils have had a great time pretending to make pancakes in PE! The children have been using the tennis rackets and beanbags to develop their hand-eye coordination, gross and fine motor skills. Our little chefs were shaking, flipping and catching their pancakes.

Primary 1

This week in literacy Primary 1 have been learning two new sounds; e and h.  We have been practising sounding out and blending to read small words too.

In numeracy we have been learning all about number 10.  What it looks like in tally marks, in a 10 frame and finding it on a number track.

We have also been learning about how important electricity is.  We drew pictures about how we use electricity everyday and have been learning how to stay safe around electricity.

We met with our buddies in their classroom today and had great fun together making models with playdough.

Primary 1 – Maths Week

It’s been Maths Week and Primary 1 were lucky to have 2 visitors in class to talk about how they use numbers in their jobs.

We also took part in a different outdoor numeracy activity every afternoon.  We made paper plate pictures and counted or ordered all the items we found and used to make our pictures.  We had lots of balls to count!  We had to try different strategies because it was difficult to count so many and they kept moving!  We had a number trail, to count and show numbers in a ten frame.  We even tried to count bubbles.

It was great to meet and talk to so many parents this week.  Seesaw activities have now started with a revision of our first set of phonics, enjoy!  New activities will be added on Mondays (unless it’s a holiday).

Learning in P2/1

This week has been maths week.

P2/1 were lucky to have three visitors!
Abby’s Mum is the owner of Abby J cakes and she told us how she uses maths in her job.
We had great fun learning about using money to buy the ingredients to make a cake, counting the ingredients into the bowl, turning the oven on, and lastly, making sure we shared the cake equally with all our friends! We came up with some fantastic flavours too!

Nola’s Mum worked as an environmental scientist. She told us all about ‘data’ and the numbers she looked at to make sure the water was clean. We loved her diagram to show how it worked and used our mental maths to see if our water would pass the test! If our number was too big, then the water wasn’t clean enough. We had good fun playing the game.

Norma visited us from the library. She told us how she used numbers in her work-spending money for the library and telling the time. We loved the story she read to us too.

We have had lots of fun learning maths outside. We learned about counting items and showing the numbers in different ways. Our favourite was the maths trail. We worked with partners to find the clues.

Maths Week in The Hive

We have enjoyed learning new Maths and Numeracy skills in a variety of ways during Maths Week! Some of the activities we did are :

Making 2d shapes using our geoboards and describing each shapes properties.

Using 3d shapes to make a rocket.

Making shapes using sticks in the woods.

Counting each bubble as we pop them.

Counting in 2’s, 5’s or 10’s as we pop each bubble.

Using jigsaw puzzles and Smartboard games to learn about shape and numbers.
