Athletics and Sports Day

Good morning,

Today is the start of our Athletics block in PE. Over the next 5 weeks, we will be practising different events for our Sports Day which will be held during the first week in June. Even if we aren’t back in school for that week, we will have a Virtual Sports Day! More information about Sports Day will be released closer to June.

This week’s Athletics is all based on the Long Jump. This worksheet has the key points for a successful long jump, a link to a long jump video and 6 activities to develop your strength and jumping. Make sure that you don’t just try everything once, spend time practising each day so that you are ready for Sports Day.

Remember to be active for at least 60 minutes a day.

P1 Home Learning 27.4.20

Hello P1!   We hope you had a lovely weekend and enjoyed the super weather.  There are lots of signs of Spring now.  Have you spotted any blossom or lambs?   Ms Boyes took this picture on one of her daily walks.  Do you know what these flowers are called?

Here is a new Grid for this week:

P1 Grid 27.04.20

Parents, there are two sounds to learn included in our new grid.  Booklets for the sounds are found below.   If you don’t have a printer, don’t worry, you can just look at the pages with your child, or, you could help them copy some activities into their jotters.

Finally, we have a new special square on our grid called ‘Amazing Activities!’. Is there an activity you have particularly enjoyed or are really proud of?   Did you do it by yourself or with your family?  If you’d like to share it with us, please email a photo, marked for the attention of your teacher to:                      wleastcalder-ps@westlothian.org.uk   We would love to see your Amazing Activity!

Attention Stargazers!

A couple of exciting things for you to get out and see over the next few nights:
Tonight Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite ‘train’ will be passing over head from South West to East at 9:58pm (just in case you are still awake at this time).
You can find the exact times here –
https://findstarlink.com/#1523;3
I’ve not seen them before so I’m very much looking forward to this! You should be able to see them without the need for a telescope or binoculars.
This week you can also see the Lyrid meteor shower which happens around this time every year. It is set to peak tomorrow (Tuesday) night, and if you are lucky you could see between 10-15 meteors an hour!
It’s always a good idea to go outside at least 15 minutes beforehand to allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness and give yourself the best chance of spotting something. Make sure you wrap up warm (I like to take a nice hot chocolate out with me too)
I’m looking forward to hearing all of your stargazing finds!
Fingers crossed for a clear night!
Have fun!

PE – Balance and Control

Hello everyone, I hope you had a fun and active Easter holiday.  This week in PE we are going to be improving our balance and control. This balance and control work grid has different tasks that will test and improve your ability to balance when you are standing and when you are moving.  By the end of this week, you should have completed at least one full stage from the grid so make sure you practise every day.

Balancing Grid 1

Here are some things to remember when you are practising.

  • Keep your head up and look forward
  • Don’t rush
  • Keep on trying, don’t give up

Balance is important for all sports. Think about how balance is important for a sport that you like to play. You could draw a picture, make a poster, make a list or tell a family member why balance is important for that sport.

It is also important to make sure that you are active every day. At least 60 minutes a day!

Here are some ideas to keep you active.

Happy Easter P1

We just wanted to wish you all a lovely Easter holiday.  It will be a very different holiday this time but I’m sure you will all find things to do in your houses or gardens with your family.

Stay safe and take care.
