Book Week P5/4C

Primary 5/4C took part in the BBC Authors Live event today in celebration of the 20th anniversary of The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. Author James Robertson was the person responsible for translating this well-loved book into Scots language, and we enjoyed hearing him read the story and listening out for familiar Scots words. Afterwards, we labelled a picture of The Gruffalo and drew our own wee moose, labelling them in Scots. We all enjoyed sharing our favourite Scots words; among the most popular in P5/4 were MINGIN, WHEESHT and , of course, BAHOOKIE!

Book Week Voting in Primary 1

All Primary 1 children will today have received their Book Bug pack with 3 fantastic stories in it.

In class we read the 3 books : The Station Mouse,  Unicorn Expert,  and The Prince and the Witch and the Thief and the Bears. We then voted on our favourite one and displayed our results in a graph.

The winner was …………………………………………………. The Station Mouse! See if you agree at home!

Book Week In Primary 1.

The Primary 1 children have been having lots of fun during book week. We have been listening to lots of stories and doing some linked activities.

We decorated our classroom doors to look like the covers of some of our favourite books!

We also enjoyed a visit from one of the authors of Badger the Mystical Mutt books, Laura Jackson.  She even brought along Badger!

We had some lovely stories read to us by Ann from East Calder Library. She read us a story about worries, which helped us to know what to do if we are worried about something. Then she ended with an old favourite, Elmer the Elephant.

The excitement at East Calder just kept on coming, with a visit from the Book Bug!!! He came along to see us all in preparation for our grown ups coming in to school today to be given our Book Bug packs.

NURSERY – ‘LOOK FOR A BOOK’

Our little ones have been participating in ‘Look for a Book’ in East Calder this week.

They chose to hide some books in the library!!! We thought this was a great idea, please look out for the free books hidden next time you visit the library.

You too can participate in this fun initiative by buying books from our Book Sale (bags with information also provided) and hiding anywhere in the community.

NURSERY – BOOK SALE

To promote Book Week Scotland and to help raise funds for nursery we are holding a book sale at Nursery this week.

This is set up in the cloakroom area of the Nursery.

Please support the Nursery by purchasing a book or two which can be used to read at home or use as part of the ‘Look for a Book’ initiative.  The money raised will benefit your child by either purchasing new books or equipment.

Many thanks

NURSERY – BIG BEDTIME READ

We are relaunching our bedtime reading initiative during Scotland Book Week this week.  You will find this set up in the reception area of the Nursery.  These are a set of 5 books for you and your child to borrow and share at home as part of their bedtime routine.

The Big Bedtime Read’s aim is to ensure children read a bedtime story at least 4 or more times a week.

You and your child will have access to our Big Bedtime Read packs whenever you wish.  You are free to change your pack at any time.  All we ask is that you record the pack you have borrowed by writing your child’s name and the date you take the pack, in the lending folder.

We hope you take the opportunity to borrow the packs and take advantage of this activity which will greatly benefit your child by

  • Helping them to become a confident reader
  • Establishing a good bedtime routine
  • Improving concentration and behaviour
  • Helping your child develop decision making skills
  • Improving attachment and bonding between parents and children

A Special Visitor

We’ve had a very special visitor today going in and around all the classes at ECPS!  We were delighted when Book Bug came to see us to help us celebrate Book Week.  Some of us read him stories and others just wanted a big cuddle.  Thank you Book Bug, we hope you come back to visit us next year!!
