National Photo competition – “HOLD STILL” – a moment in time

https://www.npg.org.uk/hold-still/

Spearheaded by The Duchess of Cambridge, Patron of the National Portrait Gallery, Hold Still, a portrait of our nation in 2020, is an ambitious community project to create a unique photographic portrait which captures the spirit, mood, hopes, fears and feelings of the nation as we continue to deal with the Coronavirus outbreak.

Whilst many people’s lives are on hold to help protect our helpers and heroes, there are some that are working harder than ever, and others that are enduring the upheaval of hardship and loss. Hold Still will capture a snapshot of the people of the UK at this time, creating a collective portrait of our nation which will reflect resilience and bravery, humour and sadness, creativity and kindness, human tragedy and hope as we hold still for the good of others, and celebrate those who have continued so we can stay safe.

The Duchess and the National Portrait Gallery invite you to submit your own photographic portrait, taken during these extraordinary times, which responds to one of the following themes:

  • Helpers and Heroes
  • Your New Normal
  • Acts of Kindness

One hundred shortlisted portraits will feature in a virtual exhibition on the Gallery’s website and a selection of images will also be shown across the UK later in the year.

The project is completely free and open to all ages and abilities. Images must involve people, and can be captured on phones or cameras. Each image will be assessed on the emotion and experience it conveys rather than its photographic quality or technical expertise. The closing date for submissions is the 18 June 2020.

I love taking photos, and maybe you already have that special portrait of someone in your family or a selfie, that captures this moment in time?

Worries!

Have you heard the story “The huge bag of worries” ?

I like it because it reminds us that lots of people have worries and the more you think about them and carry them around in your mind, it is like carrying a bag that gets heavier and heavier until it’s just too much to carry!

Watch the video to find out what to do if you feel this way too!

This is a nice idea you might like to try – to doodle away your worries!

Primary 2 – Thursday 14th May 2020

Good Morning everyone! I hope you all found Wellbeing Wednesday fantastic – I know I did! You should now have your week 6 pack of learning at home. Here are some activities to go along with your new pack.

Numeracy

As we are focusing on fractions this week, here is a fraction challenge all about numbers. Please use concrete materials around your home to help you should you need them – you could use stones, pencils, sweets or any other objects you may have! Your challenge is to find half of the numbers below:

  • 2
  • 4
  • 6
  • 8
  • 10

What strategy did you use to find half of the numbers? How many groups did you have to split the numbers into to find a half? Discuss these questions with someone at home.

Art

This week, we are going to think about our heroes. A hero doesn’t always need to be someone famous or a superhero from a film, it could be someone a lot closer to you. Maybe even someone in your family! Here are some super fun art activities all about heroes!

  1. Make a mask! Use any card that you can get your hands on. Cereal boxes, egg box lids, delivery packages… anything with a bit of weight works really well! Make a hole. Tie it together with string, laces, wool… and have fun decorating!
  2. Arm cuffs! Leftover loo rolls make excellent superhero arm cuffs!
  3. A Cape (of course!) What could you use for a cape? A towel, a pillow-case, an apron, a coat worn by the hood?
  4. Superhero training! Every hero needs to practice their skills to stay on their game. Set up a DIY obstacle course in your garden or living room.
  5. Talk about your heroes. You can use this opportunity to talk about the real heroes who make a difference in your world everyday … remember, not all superheroes wear capes!

Writing

Staying with the theme of heroes, this week we are going to create a character profile all about our very own superhero! Your superhero can be anyone you want them to be! Use the template below to draw your superhero first and then write 3+ sentences all about your superhero! Have a think about the following things and use them to help draw and write about your hero.

  • What is their name?
  • What is their power?
  • What do they look like?
  • Do they have any accessories (e.g. a shield or a wand)?
  • What does their voice sound like?
  • What is their job as a hero (e.g. to fight crime or to save animals)?

                Special Activity

Today Blair Drummond Safari Park are going live on Facebook to give everyone a talk all about tigers! Follow the link for the live talk at 12pm and see if you can make notes about any interesting facts you find out! Remember you can use bullet points when making notes!

Then complete the noun worksheet below.

Numeracy and Maths

Daily Ten

For your daily ten today, let’s finish off practising adding on ten more before moving onto ten less.

Here’s the 100 square as a support tool.

  1. 25     2. 60      3. 57      4. 20      5. 11     6. 80       7. 90     8. 21      9. 53  10. 30

Ten Frame subitising

We’ve not done this in a little while, so brush up on your subitising skills to shout out or write down how many dots are in the ten frame (without counting, if you can!). You have 3 seconds per ten frame.

Money

I have added a number of online games for you to try on Educationcity, you will find them in the Home learning section of our class area. They are….

  • Recognising coins
  • Splash out
  • Shelling out

Looking forward to seeing all of the work (pictures) from your money challenges.  They really do make my day. Please ask an adult to email them into the school office.

wldeans-ps@westlothian.org.uk

Make sure to finish off all the money worksheets in your last home learning pack.

Ever heard the phrase ‘ Money doesn’t grow on trees’ ? …I certainly heard that a lot from my parents when I was little!!

Why not have a go at designing your own money tree. All you need is a selection of real coins, a piece of paper and some crayons or coloured pencils. Draw the blank tree outline (or have an adult help you..) and choose a selection of coins to make the leaves. Pop the coins under the paper in the place you would like the leaf to be and rub! Ta..da.. A money tree.. Here is a picture to give you some inspiration.

Don’t forget to look carefully at the coins as you are rubbing them, think about how much they are worth, their size and colour, their shape and finally you could even add up how much your money tree is worth when you are finished.. What could you buy? Is it enough for that new toy you have your eye on? Have a look online, what can you afford to buy if your money tree was real?

Enjoy!!

Story time

I have been enjoying reading some stories to Noah by the author Eric Carle, last week we all listened to the Hungry Caterpillar. This week I thought I would share with you another favourite, the story of ‘The Very Busy Spider’. So grab some milk or your water bottle and let’s pretend it’s story time in class!

I don’t know about you, but I used to be quite scared of spiders. I’ve come to realise that they are not scary at all, in fact they are extremely useful little creatures. You will see lots of webs around your garden just now. They are fascinating and must take a spider so long to build! Amazing!! Why don’t you go on a spider web hunt and see how many you can find. You could even have a go at drawing your own complicated spider’s web or finding out why spiders are so useful.

I’ve added a link below to guide you how to draw your own spider. Have fun!

Parents/Carers – Below is a link to the School Meals annual survey, it would be very much appreciated if you haven’t already filled it out to do so.  Many Thanks!
