This Week in P3

Literacy

In writing this week, we continued to develop our skills when writing a descriptive piece. We looked at a few examples and assessed each piece of writing. Then we read our feedback from last week and used this to up-level our writing. This week, we were describing a female rugby player. We used the describing bubble to help us structure our description.

In reading this week we were focusing on our summarising skills. This is where need to tell a friend what the text was about. We have to only include the important details.

Maths

In numeracy this week, we continued to develop our multiplication skills. Some of us were looking at the 3 and 4 times tables. We also had a class number talks where we discussed the different strategies we could use to calculate the answer. We also played multiplication games such as times table bingo.

IDL

For our sports topic this week, we looked at ‘The Football Players’ (1908) by Henri Rosseau. Henri Rosseau was famous for his abstract paintings. We discussed the meaning of abstract and then identified what made this painting abstract. Then, we designed our own abstract painting representing a sporting event.

P4 Class 25.03.2022

We have had a great time this week researching facts about Scottish wildlife.  We learnt to categorise them into herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.

We used graphs to represent our surveys on  favorite pets.  We estimated and measure the height of trees outside and we made function machines.

We also enjoyed making poems about gratitude.  We used our senses to express how we feel.  For reading, we have been working on our reading aloud strategies and asking evaluative questions.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

PE

We made the most of the beautiful weather this week and went outside for PE. The children worked on their balancing, climbing and strength.

Outdoor Learning

The children had Outdoor Learning with Mrs Dobbie on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Dobbie set the children a challenge of getting from one side of the playground to the other, only one person was allowed their feet on the ground.

The children decided to use the crates to move across the playground. They worked amazingly as a team!

Drama

What a dramatic morning we had in Dean’s Hospital. We had accidents from falling off a roof, falling out a tree and breaking arms and legs! Someone also had trouble breathing. Luckily, we had amazing Doctors on standby to make everyone better!

Weekly Update From Primary One

Welcome to this weeks blog. Some of our highlights to share with you.

Outdoor Learning

During this weeks outdoor learning, the children wrote a fantastic collaborative Spring Poem using their senses-

Classroom Garden Centre

This week, in our class garden centre we have been looking at different  life-cyles. Firstly we tracked the life cycle of a bean, (we planted beans last week and are patiently waiting for shoots to appear) some pictures below-

Then we looked at the life cycle of an apple blossom tree. We planted some apple seeds and are hoping that they grow so that, we can transfer them into pots for the children to take home and plant in their own gardens.

The children then went onto create their own apple blossom tree life cycle diagram.

Writing – My Bedroom

This week we continued with our descriptive writing block. The children had to describe their bedroom, where in the house it was, how many beds, what was in the room and what they enjoyed doing there, Some super examples below-

As the weather has been amazing this week, the children have enjoyed some outdoor numeracy as well has spending time on the trim track. A great time had by all.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend. I will be back next week with more updates.

What have P6 been up to this week?

Topic

Jaxson – I enjoyed drawing a WW2 soldier and his equipment.

Silence Day in aid of Ukraine

Well despite everyone thinking we would never manage it…we did! There was the odd blip. (Miss Stanway was the first to forget.)

Anton – I was surprised at how much money we raised.

(So far £71). Thanks so much for your generous donations.

Hope – It was hard but we remembered why we were doing it.

It helped that we spent some time outside drawing and going on the trim track even though we could only communicate on our whiteboards.

We even practised some BSL (British Sign Language). Our favourite sign was for hometime…it was a tough day!

Literacy

On Monday it was National Poetry Day. We listened to a poem and then wrote poems of our own.

Science

Robbie – I enjoyed the water cycle song.

P5’s Weekly Update

This week in P5 we have had another session of Green Gym where we continued to build the Willow Den but we also got the opportunity to do some tight-rope walking if we wanted to! This was lots of fun and made Mrs Hillan giggle quite a lot!

Ryley – I found it quite exciting to go on the tight-rope. At first I found it quite scary, but after a few times I enjoyed it.

Sophie C – I was looking at the tight-rope at thought that I didn’t want to go on it, but when I did, it was fine.

Chloe – The tight-rope was hard and when you got the hang of it, you could do it.

Olivia – I loved the tight-rope walk and I never even found it hard!

Lewis R – The tight-rope looked a bit scary, but when I went on it, it was fine.

Gracie – It was fun adding some bits to the willow den.

Sophie G – At first the tight-rope looked quite scary, but when you went on it was ok. I liked helping people go along it.

Kayleigh – At first I couldn’t get on, but when I did it was fun!

Kullyn – It was fun at first, but when I fell I got embarrassed. But it got better along the way.

In Writing this week we looked at poetry as Monday was World Poetry Day. We all discussed and then created our own ‘Thank you’ poems, where we said what a Thank you looks like, smells like, tastes like, sounds like and feels like. Have a look at some of our super efforts:

For Spelling this week we used our spelling words to create a ‘Spelling Poem’. Some of us put a lot of thought into these. It was good for us to know that a poem doesn’t have to rhyme. We also played a game where we wrote our spelling words twice and then shuffled them, turned them upside down and took turns trying to find spelling word pairs.

In Numeracy we completed our money assessments and played some interactive money games. Mrs Hillan tested our knowledge on giving change so that she knows how much we know so far. We also looked more in depth at counting amounts of money using coins and notes.

We completed our Roundhouses last week for our Celtic topic – take a look!!!

For our Space topic this week, we presented our group posters to the rest of the class.

14/3/22

IDL

The children enjoyed the challenge this week of trying to put a skeleton back together! They then completed an art lesson with Mrs Morrison about how to draw a skeleton and looking at all the different bones.

PE

Mrs Wallace came to visit our PE lesson this week and was very impressed with how the children participated in a game, how they could use a chest pass and a bounce pass and how many children successfully scored into the basket.

Literacy

The children have worked very hard this week on their end of term check-ups. We have also been working hard to answer comprehension questions about our reading book by answering in a sentence and not forgetting our core-writing targets!

I am very proud of how hard the children have worked this week! Enjoy the sunshine and have a lovely weekend! 🙂

P4

This week we had a fantastic time learning many skills such as;

Numeracy- reading timetables and revising on our division and multiplication strategies.

We used our laptops to research facts about kelpies.  We took notes then we used these facts to write a description of kelpies.

We leant to copy, paste and use enter tab on the keyboard.  This helped us make a PowerPoint presentation.

For IDL, we used clay to make sculptures and leant how to mould, make it stable and add texture to it.

Happy weekend everyone!

What have P6 been up to this week?

Numeracy and Maths

This week was ‘Mathematics and its Impact on the World Week.’

We discovered how important maths is in the world around us and in the world of work. Using the laptops we researched different occupations and found out what mathematical skills are needed.

Katie – A doctor measures temperature and calculates weight.

Callum – A therapist needs to know the time when a patient is coming.

Alexis – A writer needs to understand money in order to buy their equipment.

Robbie – An artist uses geometry and shape.

We also researched famous mathematicians.

Here is Callum’s poster.

Here is Fraser’s poster.

Katie – I learnt that Isaac Newton got hit on the head by an apple and discovered gravity!

Bailey – Riemann came from Germany and was an expert in physics.

Kaiden – Descartes died in a science lab!

Literacy

Reading

In our groups we read a section of the text and then wrote down our predictions for what would happen next based on what had happened so far.

In addition we took time to read the amazing science-fiction stories we had all written!

Kaiden – I liked the robots in Fraser’s story.

Robbie – I liked the monster in Callum’s story when it crashed into the ocean and scared people.

Naavah- I liked the story I read because it was detailed.

Writing

Bailey – I enjoyed learning about a police diver and writing about them in my descriptive writing.

Health

We talked about alcohol and the effects it can have on your body. We also discussed the difference between responsible and anti-social drinking and the misuse of alcohol.

We also talked about what to do in an emergency and how to put people in the recovery position:

PE – Netball

We practised dodging away from a defender in order to be in a good place to receive the ball.

Naavah – I have got better at netball.

Emily was amazing at catching the ball this week. She has worked very hard at this.

Outdoor Learning

Naavah – We went litter picking, planted more trees and emptied the compost bin.

Hope – We need to start again with the compost bin because a packet was put in which means it won’t work.

Coding

We learnt to write block code and use a loop function. Then we uploaded a link to my app on TEAMS.

Kyle – A race car driver was doing a course but a person didn’t look left or right and so a car hit him! The step forward would be on loop. I put a note up saying always look left and right!

Emily – In mine there are two animals racing, they start at different times and the panda wins. An alert then comes up to say the panda has won!

Participation Friday

We sold our rocks for the first time last week and sold out! So this week we have been busy making more to sell.

Some of us have even used the Ukraine flag on our rocks as part of our designs which have positive messages.

Important Announcement about Next Thursday

We are having a silent day in order to raise money for Ukraine. We will have to communicate using whiteboards when in school. However, we are allowed to talk at lunchtime and break. Miss Stanway will try not to speak during the entire day. We know will be quite difficult but the people of Ukraine are going through a challenging time at the moment so we are going to try really hard!

Weekly Update From Primary One

Some of this weeks highlights.

Outdoor Learning

This week the children enjoyed looking at areas of biodiversity in both of our playgrounds. Some children noticed the buds appearing on the plants and discussed the importance of biodiverstiy.

Descriptive Writing

This week the children had to write about their favourite toy. They had to use the descriptive bubble to support their learning. We chose to include – size, colour, texture and what they like to do with it. Some great examples below-

Garden Centre

In class, we have been disucssing the changes, that Spring brings and through this discussion we decided it would be great to have our very own garden centre in the class, where we could grow and nurture seeds and plants. Some pictures of our new garden centre and the children planting beans.

We also began planting bean seeds in their very own green house so that we could watch and record them growing.

I hope you have a lovely weekend and I will be back next week with more updates.
