Weekly Update From P1A

Hello and welcome to the final blog of this term (hard to believe!) . Some of this weeks learning that the children wanted to share with you.

Literacy –

This week we have been focusing on the “a” sound. The children have been making “a” in lots of different ways and have been learning to blend it with another sound to make a  word – am which we then used in our writing. In term 2, we will be doing lots of blending of sounds to make 3 and 4 letter words.

   

 

Writing –

This week the children have been learning how to create a simple sentence using the common words they already know. The sentence was I am 4 or 5. In order to be successful the children had to use a capital letter, finger spacing and a full stop. Some impressive pictures below.

During smart-start the children have been using magnetic letters to make common words and then practiced writing the words on different coloured paper.

   

Reading –

Books we have really enjoyed this week include-

This is a lovely story about Billy who worries about everything. He worries so much that he can’t sleep. Luckily Grandma knows how to help him. She makes him a worry doll so that Billy can tell his doll all his worries and she will worry instead of him. It is a lovely story that the children really enjoyed and they loved seeing my worry doll (in the picture above).

The Colour Monster

This is a story about feelings and emotions. The colour monster in the book is feeling very mixed up. He is yellow, blue, red etc. (each of the colours represent an emotion e.g. yellow happiness etc.) the story helps the children to identify feelings and understand that we all experience different feelings and sometimes more than one at the same time. This linked to our weekly health and wellbeing activity.  We drew our own colour monsters using a guided drawing technique.

   

This week we revisited 8 and moved onto the number 9. The children have been learning different ways to make and partition 9 and have been displaying different combinations  on a ten frame. We are also continuing to develop subitising skills using dot patterns (the ability to recognise the number of objects in a group without counting them)- e.g. how many do you see and how do you see them? The children are definitely becoming more skilled in this area of numeracy.

Primary 1B Learning Highlights

Health and Well Being

This week in health and well being we have been talking about our worries. This can be an especially worrying time for some children so it was a nice opportunity to speak openly about anything which has been worrying us. Together, we listened to the story of Silly Billy by Anthony Browne.

Billy had lots of different worries, some of which seemed a little ‘silly’ like being worried about shoes and rain. We discuss how no worry is really silly and how it is important to share our worries with our friends or an adult we trust. After sharing some of our worries, we fed our worries to the worry monster by drawing a picture of them in his tummy.

We have introduced ‘bubble time’ in our class, if we feel worried or would like to talk to a grown up we can request bubble time in the afternoon to simply have a chat and chase that worry away.

Literacy

In literacy this week we have been learning the new sound ‘a’. We now know that this is a vowel, a black tunnel sound, where we have to open our mouths really wide to form the sound. Alongside this sound we have been learning about Inky’s Vowel house. Below is a picture of the vowel house. There is a story to go with each picture. We are very good at remembering the actions and the sounds which go with the story.

To help us remember the shape of the letter we made some ‘ant a’s’ for our classroom display.

New word focus –

Last week we learned all about three new words, I , the and a. This week we have introduced the word ‘am’. We are able to write and recognise this word. We had a word hunt in our classroom and had to find and sort all the words we know so far into hoops. We then competed against each other in ‘word splat’. It was great fun.  We even used the new word in our writing task this week, check out our fantastic sentences.

 

Numeracy

This week we have been ordering numbers to 20. Every morning we can choose a number card and as a class we order the numbers all the way up to 20. We are now getting very quick and confident when recognising teen numbers. Mrs Stevenson is very sneaky sometimes and is our class number thief. We need to figure out which number she has stolen! It is lots of fun….

We have also been learning about the magic number 10! How to write it, how to make collections of ten and how to make ten in all sorts of different ways.

We have been continuing our work on subitising by practising this game with our friends.

We are definitely ready for our October holidays. It has been such a busy term and now it is time for a well earned rest. We will welcome all the children back to school on Wednesday 21st of October. Have a lovely break.

Primary 4 working hard

This week in Numeracy we have been working on addition with missing numbers – for example

12 + __ = 34. This is something that has always come out as being a challenge for pupils, but when we looked at these together the children found them much easier to work out. Hopefully when we are faced with these again we will be able to answer them confidently.

In Number Talks we have been looking at a two digit addition sum and the pupils have been asked to share how they would work it out and if they could find more than one way to answer it. One of the sums given was 24 + 45 = and here were some of the ways of working it out:

 

For literacy this week we have continued working hard on our new spelling words and we have taken these home again to practise. We have completed some other comprehension questions on our group readers this week, this time looking at reading sentences from the story and deciding if they were true or false. In writing this week we looked back at our All About Me stories and we assessed ourselves using our core target grids and our genre target grids for descriptive writing. We talked through what each target meant then assessed ourselves after we had read over our work. We then used our genre placemats to help us record what went well in our piece of writing and what we could do to make it better.

 

 

For our Novel Study this week we created some questions to ask the characters in the book. Then we took turns at taking on the role of one of the characters to answer the questions we had made. We had to use our imagination as well as our knowledge of the text to help us answer.

We used our miming skills in drama to act out a scene from the story and our classmates had to guess which part we were acting out.

This Week in P3/2

Literacy

 

This week we were describing how we looked, our personalities and our hobbies. We used the descriptive bubble to support our writing.

 

We have also been reading our books and looking for information to help us answer questions based on the text.

 

During spelling this week, we have been practising our words using rainbow writing, Play-Doh writing and writing the words with our eyes closed. We were also writing sentences with our new words.

Maths

 

This week we have continued with our topic of place value. We have been using hundreds, tens and ones cubes to represent different numbers.

We also had to collaborate and work as a team to identify the hundreds, tens and ones of the given number.

 

Health and Wellbeing

 

This week we were discussing how it feels to belong and safe. Everyone in the class shared an example of when then had felt that they belong or they were safe.

We also thought about our goals for the year. Everybody had to think of at least one goal they would like to set for in school.

P7/6

LD- I found out that some tribes in the Amazon lose their traditions due to other tribes taking over their village.

KT- We learned about angles.  I enjoyed going outside and looking for angles.

LS- I learned to round decimals to whole numbers.

GH- I have been practicing my number bonds.

AF- I learned to that to summarise text, I must only write about the main events.

MN- I really enjoyed learning to create ‘cartoon art’.  I had to make sure I followed the step by step instructions.

 

For HWB-  The children created a list of activities which promote their positive outlook.

Up, Up and Away in P4/3!!

It has been another busy week in P4/3! as all of the children continue to make improvements in their learning, well done everyone!! We have added to our learning environment in the form of our flying high wall display. We shared our ideas on the different ways we can encourage and support each other and succeed in our learning. A big thank you to Mrs Walker who helped create the display in her own time.

Our class novel this term is ‘ The BFG ‘ by Roald Dahl. We have been enjoying exploring the different characters, especially the Giant! Have a look at some of our directed drawings of Sophie and the Giant. Mrs Morrison is proud of your efforts!!

P.4 Book Reviews

 

We finished our non- fiction readers this week so we were able to review our books. We thought about all the the book review worksheets we had completed in the past and we decided to create our own. We had to create the layout that suited us best and decide on the content too. Mrs Lockhart thought they were fabulous (better than the worksheet ones!).

Weekly Update From P1A

Welcome to our P1A blog. We have had another really busy week in Primary One. The children have used a  number of different materials and techniques to create some fantastic Autumn art . Some pictures below.

The children finished our  Autumn display by creating acorns. They made them by using sponge paints and collage.

We had great fun making Autumn Sun-Catchers. The children cut and sorted tissue paper and arranged the paper inside a leaf shape. I laminated them. All we need now is some Autumn sun to create the desired affect!

To create the prickles for our hedgehogs the children used plastic forks dipped in paint. We think this technique was really effective.

Literacy –

This week we have focused on the “p” sound as well as common words “the, A and I”. We have played “p” bingo and used our coloured cats to determine where in a word we hear the “p” sound.

   

 

Writing –

This week the children were asked to draw a picture of themselves. They had to add lots of detail e.g. eyebrows, fingers, etc. and the picture had to have all the relevant body parts. The aim was to get them to think about using descriptive language e.g.  I have long brown hair/ blue eyes etc. Some examples below.

We have also been busy making our own zig-zag books which sequence the life-cycle of an oak tree.

Numeracy –

In numeracy we are continuing to focus on numbers to 10. This week we have been exploring different ways to make numbers using a variety of concrete materials.

Health and Wellbeing

As part of our Jigsaw recovery programme  the children were asked to think about what they are looking forward to learning now they are back at school.

Katie said “I am looking forward to writing more numbers and I feel happy when I do this”

Liam said “I am looking forward to learning how to draw and add more details and I will feel good and happy”

Conlon said “I am looking forward to learning how to write all my letters correctly and that will make me feel good and happy”
