Primary 4’s Week

In Numeracy we have started working on subtraction. We completed an assessment to see where we are all at so that Mrs Hillan knows where we need supported or challenged.

For literacy this week we have continued working hard on our new spelling words and we have these home again to practise. We have our new homework out which requires us to pick two tasks from the grid to help us learn our spelling words. It is really important that we complete these each week.

In writing this week we have looked at Persuasive Writing again and created a one-sided argument. We used Fireworks as our theme this time. We assessed ourselves using our core target grids and our genre target grids for persuasive writing. We spoke about the pros and cons of fireworks to help us decide which side of the argument we wanted to write from. We will look at another persuasive piece next week. We continued our topic of The Egyptians this week. We finished creating our questions on what we would like to find out about the Egyptians, here are some of them:

This Week in P3/2

Literacy

 

This week we started Early Literacy Focus (ELF) which means that the children will now be working in small groups with an adult for all literacy activities.

In spelling this week, we were learning a new sound through rainbow writing, practising our words on a whiteboard and using the words in a sentence. We also played spelling pairs with our partner.

We were learning about persuasive writing this week. We were persuading the reader that Halloween is fun.

 

Maths

We were learning about odd and even numbers. We were learning how to work out if big numbers are odd or even. We learned that when a number is in the hundreds, we just need to look at the ones to work out if it is odd or even.

 

IDL

Our new topic is the Vikings. We were learning that in the Shetland Islands they have a festival called Up Helly Aa. It is held on the last Tuesday in January to celebrate the Viking heritage and welcome in Spring.

 

Halloween Fun

We had great Halloween fun on Friday. We were able to dress up in our favourite costumes and had a Halloween craft session as well. There was a great display of original thinking and some fantastic creations made.

The verdict Halloween craft time was amazing!

Happy Halloween from P4/3

There’s been some spooky goings on in P4/3 this week as we have had fun celebrating Halloween!! The children have been creative and designed their own Halloween characters using a range of materials. They will be sent home with your child today.

In Literacy, we have been learning about  Persuasive genre of writing. This involves writing  a one sided argument to try to persuade the reader.

The purple group had some persuasive ideas about  Halloween.

Happy Halloween From P1A

 

Firstly, I would like to say that as a staff, we are so sad that this year we are unable to have a our annual Halloween disco. It is one of the highlights of the year for the children (and some of the staff!!) but hopefully next year things will be back on track. This week some of our learning has had a Halloween theme.

We have been painting pumpkins using a mabelling technique and used wax crayons and a paint wash to create different textured affects.

Writing     

This term we are focusing on persuasive writing. As a starting point, the children were asked to share their opinion on  things that were important to them. Next, we focused on sharing how Halloween makes us feel. The children really enjoyed thinking of words to descibed how they felt and suggested scary, spooky, excited, happy etc. Some examples below-

                        

This week we began ELF which stands for Early Literacy Focus. ELF will run Monday to Thursday from 9.15 -10.25. Within this time, the children will complete 4 literacy tasks  e.g. reading, common words, handwriting and phonics, and will be supported by an adult during each task. We are hopeful that this will  enable the children to become more confident, independent learners. Below is a sound mat which we use to support blending. The children bring 3 sounds and place them on the mat, initial sound on the head, middle sound on the tummy and end sound on the tail, we then blend them together to say a word. We are beginning to change initial sounds to create new words.

   Number 10

This week we have been focusing on number 10. We have been using numicon to help us learn our number bonds to 10.

Health and Wellbeing

This term we will be looking at how we celebrate and value difference. We began this week by looking at similarities between ourselves and our elbow partner. Some pictures below.

Double Trouble in P5

Numeracy

This week we continued to improve our addition skills.

We feel we have improved our ability to double a number but adding near doubles was trickier!

Maths

We revised 2D shape and learnt about the properties of 3D shapes.

Literacy

In group reading we used inference skills to answer questions about the texts. We discussed in detail how we felt about the books with our partners. On Thursday we pretended to be one of the characters from the stories and wrote a letter to another character in the book.

Spelling

Hope – I enjoyed clapping out syllables when spelling and writing sentences for each word.

Grace – I enjoyed putting the spelling words into alphabetical order.

Christmas comes early!

Colin – I enjoyed designing a Christmas Card and spreading some Christmas joy!

Drama

I enjoyed the number game!

Health

We continued our ‘Celebrating Difference’ theme and learnt about how people are discriminated against because of the colour of their skin. Then we went on to design ribbons to raise awareness of racism and to help stop it.

Primary 1B Learning Highlights

Literacy

This week in Primary 1 we have been working hard to improve our literacy skills. We have started reading for ourselves! To start with our books feature only pictures, but this means we can use the pictures to tell the story in our own words. This is one of the targets we are focusing on in class. Whilst exploring our new books we have been discussing the setting, this means where the story takes place. We drew pictures to describe this as well as having ago at writing a simple sentence.  We have also been introduced to all the characters we will be reading about. Their names are Kipper, Biff, Chip, Mum, Dad and of course Floppy. You will hear lots and lots about them over the coming months.

We have been learning the new sound t and i, we can identify the sound and we are becoming experts at writing them too. Our new words this week were ‘and’ and ‘it’.

In writing, we have been learning how to give our opinion. This week we wrote about what we felt about Halloween. Here are some of the sentences we wrote.

Saatvik – I think Halloween is great.

Cooper – I think Halloween is exciting.

Alex – I think Halloween is good.

Sophie – I think Halloween is scary.

We have been working really hard to write tricky words on our own and to use the sounds we know to help us with spelling. We have been remembering to use our targets, this week we had a focus on using a capital letter, a full stop and putting finger spaces in between the words. Here are some examples of our work.

Numeracy

As we continue to focus on teen numbers we found a great game to play that not only helps us to recognise teen numbers but helps us to develop that skill of subitising         (seeing the amount without counting) on a ten frame. Here are some pictures of us in action.

Halloween

It is a shame that we can’t properly celebrate Halloween this year. In Primary One we have decided to make our classroom a bit spookier by creating our own bright orange pumpkins. After reading the story ‘Pick a Pumpkin’ by Patrica Toth we discussed all the different Halloween traditions that our families follow. Carving pumpkins was the most common one! Here are our spooky Halloween pumpkins.

Our Week in P4

In Number Talks we have been continuing to look at a two digit addition sum and the pupils have been asked to share how they would work it out and if they could find more than one way to answer it. One of the sums given was 64 + 34  and here were some of the ways of working it out:

 

For literacy this week we have continued working hard on our new spelling words and we have these home again to practise. We practised our spelling words by writing them in fancy lettering. There are some pictures below to look at. Next week our spelling will look a bit different and we will have some other activities to try at home.

P6/5 Week

Primary 6/5 have been learning about Bloom’s Taxonomy in literacy writing. We have also been testing our peers on questions about the book “Wonder” as that is the book we have been reading in class. We have looked at higher and lower order questions,, including knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation.
