Primary 1B Learning Highlights

Health and Wellbeing

This week in health and wellbeing we have been focusing on completing activities for children in Need. We are very excited to dress up in colourful spots on Friday! We have been thinking about how we can ‘connect’ with our friends. We discussed all of the different things which make a good friend. We shared with the class examples of how we feel about our friends.

Saatvik – Kaleb runs with me so he is my friend and I like him.

Alfie – Leighton is always kind to me.

Kellan – Saatvik always plays and includes me in his games.

We also have been learning all about why we take part in Children in Need activities. We watched a powerpoint and learned some very interesting facts. Did you know that since Children in Need started it has raised over a billion pounds for children who are less fortunate than ourselves. That’s pretty amazing! We had a chance to decorate our own Pudsey bears with bright and colourful spots.

We were also very, very lucky to have an exciting online yoga lesson from the fabulous yoga teacher Mrs Anderson from Lotus Learn Yoga. We got to meditate at the start wearing our special yoga glasses and then we learned some new super stretchy poses like the cat, cow and the horse. Finally, after all that stretching and breathing we got to have a ‘savasana’ which is when we could lie on our backs and blow out little air bubbles. It was very relaxing and we look forward to taking part in another session again soon.

Literacy

This week as we continue to work on the Persuasive writing genre we have been sharing our opinion on why we like to play. We learned and used the fancy new joining word ‘because’ to explain our opinion and link up our ideas.

Cooper – I like to play because it is fun and I play with Finlay at the park.

Alfie  – I like to play because it is friendly.

Jake – I like to play because it is fun.

This week we wrote ‘I like to play because it is……’. We had some excellent writing examples from all the boys and girls.

Numeracy

This week we have been movie stars during our numeracy time. Mrs Stevenson has been recording us playing our favourite number games. We are very excited to share this learning with you all very soon. Watch this space for our film debut!!

Remembrance Day

This week we celebrated Remembrance day. We discussed all about why we celebrate this day and what the poppy flower means. It was very interesting and we were incredibly respectful during our 2 minute silence on Wednesday. One of our activity stations this week was to create a poppy picture using a printing technique. These are some of our fabulous creations.

To round up our weekly blog I would like to remind parents and carers to continue to send in the red reading folders everyday so we can continue to deliver quality reading experiences for your child.

Have a lovely weekend.

Mrs Stevenson and Primary 1B

This week in Primary 4

In Numeracy we have continued working on subtraction. We have used this in our Number Talks also. This is one of the sums we had to work out and say how we got our answers:

In writing this week we have looked at Persuasive Writing again and created a one-sided argument about why having a school garden is important. We began by coming up with good reasons for this before completing our pieces.

Children’s pieces:

We have taken part in daily activities to raise awareness of the Children in Need theme this week. We have discussed our goals for each day as well as what we are grateful for and any worries we may have. We have thought about how we can help ease our worries also. Here are some of our thoughts and some pictures:

It helped me discuss how I felt and why I felt that way – Alyssa

I feel happy after writing about all my worries – Erin R

It is good to let the teacher know what your worries are about – Kayleigh

I am grateful for having my family, pets and friends all around me – Maisy

Also as part of this we did Joe Wicks 5 minute workout every morning to start off our day. This was fun and got us energised for the day!!

Well done Primary 4 for working hard again this week!

Mrs Lockhart’s Days

In our Health & Well Being lesson this week we had to challenge our assumptions or as Ariah put it ” Not judge a book by its cover “.

It was really interesting work. We looked at pictures of different people and tried to guess their hobbies and interests from their appearance. Then we discussed our answers – often we were way off! We all realised how much we judge people on appearances and how misleading that can be.

It was a very engaging, thought provoking activity and we all learned a lot.

Have a go ………………

A Week in P5

Literacy
Writing
We continued to develop our persuasive writing techniques.
In addition we practised using various openers to create interesting sentences.
Reading
In group reading we read our texts, discussed them and practised using different techniques to work out the meaning of unknown words in order to improve our vocabulary.
We also discussed what made a good story and then with our partner wrote down what we thought would happen next in our novels. Some of us wrote great beginnings that would make the reader want to read on. Some of us applied what we had learnt about openers earlier in the week and used them in our stories. Also some of used some descriptive adjectives and powerful verbs!
Bailey – I am enjoying the class novel.
Spelling
Sophie Smith – I am proud of my spelling.
Numeracy
We all feel we have improved our addition skills.
Hope – I learnt strategies to help solve problems.
Topic
We practised using the art of collage to decorate flags of various European countries.
Bailey – I enjoyed making the flags. I learnt that each country has a different flag.
Health
This week we learnt that spreading rumours and name-calling is unacceptable and we discussed different strategies that we could use to deal with this.
Grace – I also enjoyed completing my racism ribbon from last week.
Art
This was linked into our learning about shape and we drew worlds where everything was made up of geometric shapes.

This Week in P3/2

Literacy

This week we have been practicing our spelling every day during ELF and Smart Start.

Harrison- “We have been spelling our words in different colours”.

We have been reading our book to ourselves and in our groups. We also were using the book to help us answer the questions.

Lucy- “We were skim reading to find fact in the book”.

We continued writing a persuasive piece of writing this week.

Levente- “I was persuading the reader that snow was fun because my brother and I love to play in the snow”.

Maths

This week we have been rounding numbers to the nearest 10.

Tyler N. “We use the chant 0 to 4 slide to the floor. 5 to 9 clime the vine. This helped us work out if we round up or down. For 54, we look at the ones and because it’s 4 we round down to 50. For 99, we look at the ones and because there is 9, we round up to 100”.

IDL

This week we continued to learn about the Up Helly Aa Festival. We had to collaborate as group and create a small drama to describe the key features of the Up Helly Aa.

P7/6

We have had a successful learning week!

For Literacy, we learnt to use emotive language and rhetorical questions in our persuasive writing.

We have been working so hard at developing our comprehension skills.  We have been learning to use clues in the text to make inference.  We also used our skimming and scanning skills to find answers to comprehension questions.

Numeracy

We have been learning about the inverse relationship of multiplication and division. We are also developing our skills in short division.

HWB

We are developing our understanding of discrimination and prejudice.

P4/3 Update

It has been another successful week in P4/3 as we continue to challenge ourselves in our learning. We have been learning new sounds this weeks and I can tell from the results of the dictation carried out this morning, that all children have made improvements. This is so nice for Mrs Morrison to see the children motivated and wanting to improve, well done P4/3!! A big thank to parents/carers for all your hard work in supporting your child’s learning. Here are a couple of spelling tasks that have been completed at home and in class:

In numeracy this week we have been learning about place value, which involves identifying the value of a number. Some children have found this concept tricky to grasp, so we will continue to explore this further next week.

Have a lovely weekend and I will check in with you next week.

Please remember reading books need to be brought to school every day. We aim to read daily in class as well as completing comprehension activities and this can be difficult if not everyone has a book. Reading books are put in quarantine for 72 hours before they can be re used so it is very important that they are returned to school on Thursday. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Have a great weekend!

Happy Guy Fawkes From P1A

I hope you have all had a good week. The children enjoyed their socially distant Halloween party last Friday. We have some super dancers in Primary One!

Some learning the children would like to share with you-

The children have enjoyed using shapes and paint to create their own fireworks.

Writing

This week we have been working hard to further develop our skills in persuasive writing. The children were asked to give their opinion on how fireworks made them feel. Some super sentences below!

You may notice that at the bottom of each writing page there are core writing targets. The children are working hard to achieve them by using a capital letter, finger space, full stop etc.

Word Boost

This week we introduced a new learning tool called Word Boost. BOOST words are good words for supporting your child with their talking, listening and later with their reading and writing. They are more ‘grown up’ words and we choose them from children’s story books. We want children to learn words like enormous and tiny so that they can use these as well as words like big and small. We teach Boost Words through a story the children enjoy. The story is read daily and 4-5 words are choosen. We talk about what the words mean, what they sound like and how we can use  them in all sorts of ways. We use the words lots of times because that is how children learn them. We will go back over the words from time to time because this helps your child to remember them.
Pictures below of this weeks Boost Words and story.

Maths – Shape

As well as number work  we have had a focus on 2D shapes and 3D objects. We have been sorting them and using them to build rockets, gates and robots.

As well as shape, I set the children a problem solving challenge. They were asked to draw as many different ways as they could to make 5 using 2 different coloured apples. They did really well, I’m very proud of them!

Health and Wellbeing – Celebrating Difference

Last week the children identified similarities between themselves and others in the class.  This week they identified differences, some responses below

Indie said ” I’ve got a sister and Katie doesn’t”

Conlon said “He has ginger hair and no-one else has”

Emily said “I like drawing and Sahel doesn’t”

I hope you all have a lovely weekend. More learning on next weeks blog.

Primary 1B Learning Highlights

Health and Wellbeing

As we continue to focus on the topic of Celebrating our Differences,  we have been identifying how we are different and what exactly makes us special. It was very interesting to hear about everybody’s unique talents, abilities or little quirks which make us the person we are. Here are some of the examples which we shared with each other.

Finlay – I am good at writing words and that makes me special.

Kaleb – I am learning my name and how to write it and that makes me feel special.

Lucy – I am really good at playing games and that makes me special.

Leighton – I can ride my bike without stabilisers and that makes me feel special.

We are working together with Primary 1A to build a special display to highlight our hard work in Health and Well Being over the last few weeks. We will share the finished result with you when it is ready.

Literacy

This week we have had a focus on building and extending our vocabulary. We have been using a new and exciting programme called Word Boost. Each week we focus on a new story and learn all about 4 exciting and ambitious WOW words. This week we read the story Leo’s Dream by Antonie Schneider. Our boost words were –

Celebrate

Reply

Investigate

Enormous

Parents should have received a special ‘parent postcard’ detailing our new words to practise using in everyday conversation in the red homework folders.

We have devised a secret signal for when we hear a boost word being spoken, we will tap our noses. Suffice to say there has been lots of nose tapping this week. It has been great fun learning about these words and matching them up with pictures. We even had a go at drawing our own pictures too….

We now know that there are different types of words. Words which are coloured yellow are adjectives (describing) and red words are verbs (doing words).

Numeracy

This week we have been continuing our hard work with teen numbers and using the ten frames to represent these numbers.

We have also been working on recognising number words and matching the numeral to the word or the collection. We have been enjoying using the laptops in the class to develop this tricky skill.

A great game we have discovered is ‘Numbers to Words Fruit Shoot’ on  the topmarks website. Here is the link to have a go at home.

https://www.sheppardsoftware.com/math/early-math/number-words-fruit-splat-game/

We are getting really good at describing how we see dot patterns and now we can use the = and + symbols when recording a number story.

Bonfire Night

Seeing this Thursday is Bonfire night we have been learning a little bit about the history behind why we celebrate bonfire Night on the 5th of November. We discussed how Guy Fawkes had a plan to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Mrs Walker set up a fun activity where we could practise our printing and colour mixing skills. We made the most beautiful fireworks pictures and even added a little sparkle too.

We hope everyone has a happy and safe Bonfire night and a lovely weekend when it comes.
