Primary 1B Learning Highlights

Health and Wellbeing

This week in health and wellbeing we have been focusing on the word bullying, what it means, what it looks like and what we should do if we ever encounter it ourselves. We discussed that bullying is something which, happens over and over again, is deliberate and can happen when more than one person is doing the bullying. We decided that we would definitely not tolerate any bullies in Primary One and we made up slogans to prevent this from happening. Our class slogan is ‘No Bullies Here’.

We have also continued to focus on recognising our emotions and how we deal with different emotions. We have been drawing portraits of ourselves and how we look when we are feeling a certain way. We discussed strategies to help us and shared ideas of different things we can do when we feel sad or scared. We had some wonderful suggestions, such as, find a friend to talk to or play some music.

Literacy

In literacy this week we have been working hard using the magnetic boards to blend and segment words like, cat, fat, mat. We have learned about word rhyming families and how we can use them to help us to spell these new words.  Our new sounds this week have been e and f. On Thursday we made some fantastic e ‘Elmos’ to decorate our class and to help us recall the shape of the letter as it can be a tricky one to get right!

As we continue to work on developing our persuasive writing skills this week we were giving our opinion on whether we like pets. We wrote 2 sentences,  I like pets. Pets are… and we had to fill in the last part of the sentence with our opinion.

Here are some of our opinions.

Finlay – I like pets. Pets are friendly and are cute.

Jake – I like pets. Pets are cute and cuddly.

Arianna – I like pets. Pets are nice.

Jack – I like pets. Pets are cute.

We continue to enjoy reading our word boost stories. This week’s words are from Katie Morag and the Two Grandmothers. These words have definitely been the trickiest so far but we have made a great attempt at remembering their definitions and trying to use them everyday when we are talking. These are the words we have focused on.

Numeracy

We have been exploring different ways to represent teen numbers this week. We have used Numicon, ten frames and made cube towers. We continue to develop our addition skills through making and counting out collections of numbers.

It has been a very busy week in Primary 1B and we are ready for a break at the weekend. Please remember to bring in reading books everyday and a gentle reminder that as a health promoting school children will only be allowed to drink water in class.

Have a fabulous weekend.

Primary 4’s Week

In Numeracy we have been working on decomposition (borrowing). Some of us have found this quite a challenge, but we have stuck with it. This would be a good thing for the children to practise at home when they can!

At first I thought it would be hard, but when I got the hang of it, it was really easy – Emily

When I started it was quite tricky and now it’s got really easy – Caelan

When I’ve started using my head to work them out it has gotten easier – Sophie C

It was tricky but when we got our mind to it, we could do it – Summer

I found it extremely hard, but when I thought about it, it was easy – Shay

In writing this week we have looked at Persuasive Writing again and creating a one-sided argument about why having a school uniform is important. We began by coming up with good reasons for this before completing our pieces. Here are some of our thoughts:

We should have school uniform for if we get lost on a trip – Maisy

When I thought about having a school uniform, I thought of hundreds of ideas! – Erin R

It was tiring, but it was a good job and worth it! – Alyssa

When I was writing I used my persuasive writing mat to help me – Kayleigh

Here are some of our finished pieces:

We have been busy preparing our Sharing the Learning ready to film next week! We have lots of good things to tell you about that P4 do in Literacy, Numeracy and Health and Wellbeing.

In PE this week we have been playing some games to help increase our fitness levels. We were in the hall this week due to rainy weather. We really enjoyed the Video Game where we had to ‘fast forward’ – run, ‘rewind’ – go backwards, ‘pause’ – stop, ‘record’ – pull a silly face and ‘slow motion’ – walk at half speed! Here are some photos of us enjoying the games this week:

Well done on another productive week Primary 4!!

P4/3, Five to Thrive

This week, we enjoyed a Health and Well-being focus linked to Children in Need. We explored the 5 to thrive approach to improving physical and emotional well- being.

First Thrive to Five- Connect

Here we explored different ways of connecting with one another to improve well-being. Suggestions included: give someone a smile, sharing is caring , be kind and gentle and include others. We also discussed goals and targets and ways of achieving them.

Second Thrive-  Take Note

Here we looked at  ways of identifying traits of when people are not feeling themselves and actions we could take to help others.

Third Thrive- Get Active

Moving your body in different ways can help your physical and mental well-being. As part of our P.E. lesson, we took part in a range of physical activities such as speed, dribbling and balance. We discussed the positive impacts exercise can have on the body and then we completed a fitness diary, self-assessing our ability to complete the task.

Fourth Thrive- Be Curious

As a class we discussed the importance of taking part in learning, the different ways to challenge ourselves and why it is beneficial to try something new.

Fifth Thrive- Give

Thank you to all who donated to the sharing shed, it is nice to think of others during these difficult times.

This Week in P3/2

Literacy

During Literacy this week, we were up-levelling our writing by adding adjectives and using our core writing targets.

Alexis- “I was writing sentences about Pudsey Bear”.

We read through our reading book and then answered comprehension questions about the text. When reading, we made predictions about what might happen and looked at the picture for clues.

Tyller J. “I was reading my book”.

We have been practicing our new spelling sounds every day. We practice using our whiteboards, rainbow writing and using our spelling words when writing a sentences.

Maths

In maths this week, we were learning about patterns. We were also completing a number sequence and identifying the rule of the number sequence. We used a 100 square to support us and work out the rule and complete the number sequence.

Calvin- “Pattern is when the same thing is repeated”.

Aaron – “We were learning about number sequence. This is when you add the same amount to each number”.

IDL

For our topic this week, we were learning about Vikings homes and what they wore. We looked at what Vikings made their homes from. We compared a Viking house to our home and discussed the different materials that were used and the advantages and disadvantages of these materials. We also learned about how the Vikings dressed and the materials that their clothes were made from. The Viking used materials such a wool, leather and fur to make clothes and shoes.

Robyn- “We were learning about what the Vikings wore. They wore capes”

Scarlet- “They wore jewellery and broaches”.

P7/6

It has been another great week!  The P7/6 class have been working extra hard at learning division strategies and they have been busy writing an expository text.  They have been learning about the history and significance of Remembrance day as well.

The children have been heavily involved in organising Children in Need activities and it has been a successful venture.  For IDL, they have been working in groups research 3 different types of animals from the Amazon.  They have been learning about the different diet, habitat as well as food chain.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

P56’s blog

Apostrophes have two diferent purposes. They connect two words together: “It is” turns into “It’s”. They can also be for someones property. It sometimes comes before the s.

In maths we have been working on decimals. Decimals are things that can represent wholes or percentiges. When you go to the shops you get something £2.50 the 2 that represents units.

The 5 represnts 5 tenths and the 0 represnts hundredths.

P5 Remember

Remembrance Day

This week we celebrated Remembrance Day or  Poppy Day . We had a two minute silence on Wednesday to remember armed forces members who have died in the line of duty. We also watched a video by Rev. Nelu who talked about what it meant.

This Weeks Learning

Literacy

On Monday we continued to read our novels in group reading in order to improve our fluency and decoding skills. We practised answering questions about the text with our reading partner on Tuesday. Then on Wednesday we discussed our novels in detail in order to practise our talking and listening skills while being encouraged to back up our ideas with evidence from the text. Finally, on Thursday we wrote a persuasive piece connected to the novel.

Numeracy

Hope – We learnt how to add several numbers using different strategies.

Anna – We can look for numbers that make 10.

M – Then we can look for numbers that make 11 and 9.

Then if we add these together it makes a multiple of 10.

Debbie – It was tricky at first!

We did find it difficult. However, practise makes perfect so we had another go and we feel more confident now.

Maths – Shape

We continued to practise discussing the properties of 3d shapes and this week using pipe cleaners, to represent the edges of a shape, built our own 3d shapes.

Science – Micro-organisms

Bailey – I learnt that some microbes are harmful but some can be helpful. There are three types – bacteria, fungi and viruses.

Jaxson – I enjoyed designing my microbes poster showing how they can help us.

Health

We learnt about the difference between direct and indirect bullying and continued to discuss ways of dealing with conflict.

Weekly Update from P1A

Welcome to this weeks blog. We have had a super week, working hard and learning lots. The children have chosen some areas of their learning they would like to share with you.

We celebrated Remembrance day by making poppies and observing the 2 minute silence.

Literacy -Writing

This week we have continued to develop our skills in persuasive writing. The children had to give an opinion about play, why and what they enjoyed about it. Some examples below-

  – “o” sound

This week we have been learning about the “o” sound. The children have been writing, making and using the sound to create 3 letters words. Some children have been challenging themselves to create short sentences using a mixture of CVC words and common words!

O owls made with Cheerios!

As well as working on number bonds to 10 this week, I set the children 2 number matching challenges. In the first challenge they were given a large sheet of paper with numbers on it, they had to place the correct number sums on top of the answer. The second challenge was similar however, this time they had to match the correct dot pattern to the number. They enjoyed and did well on both!

Health and Wellbeing

This week our health and wellbeing has been linked to Children in Need. We have listened to clips from the BBC and Joe Wicks about the importance of mental health and reconnecting and valuing those around us. The children choose a friend from the class to compliment them and say what makes them special, they then drew them a special picture. Some examples below-

Lastly a picture of the children getting ready for Children in Need 2020.

Have a great weekend. More updates next week.
