Last Week in P3

Literacy

For writing this week, we started learning about information reports. A person would read an information report to learn facts or information about a particular subject. We read through an example of an information report and then we peer assessed the piece. Then we had to write an information report about a pet.

For reading we continued to develop our summarising skills when reading a variety of different texts.

Maths
For maths this week, we were learning about pictographs. This is a data handling method used to make information easier to read. We them conducted a class survey about our favourite Scottish food.

IDL

In RME, we were learning about the Jewish celebrations of Shabbat. Shabbat is the Sabbath day and it is celebrated on a Saturday. To celebrate Shabbat, there is a family meal and a blessing takes place before the meal.

I liked using the Padlet to write our questions, clarifications and summary about our Novel. TN

In writing, I enjoyed writing facts about the bees.  MM

I learnt that when we measure an area, we must write the unit of measure e.g. cm2, km2 and m2.  LM

This week we wrote an information report about bees.  We used our note taking skills and comprehension skills to find facts about them.

What have P6 been up to this week?

Literacy

We continued to read our group novels and practised visualization skills – drawing a key moment from the text.

We chose an animal and researched using non-fiction books and the internet. We practised taking notes with a partner. Later we wrote an information report about the creature, shared with our class-mates and self-assessed our work using the West Lothian targets.

Bailey – I enjoyed writing the report. We wrote about sharks and I found out that the Whaleshark is the biggest shark.

Jaxson – I liked researching snakes. I found out that snakes use their tongues to smell and their scales help them breathe under water.

Bella – I enjoyed writing about Red Pandas and Pandas – they are very interesting.

PE

In P.E. we continued to practise our gymnastics and tennis skills.

Anton – In tennis I hit the ball to Emily 4 times in a row!

Health

We talked about loss and bereavement and strategies to help us deal with these situations. This was difficult but lots of good ideas were suggested to help us cope.

Numeracy

We have been practising our mental multiplication facts. We have applied this knowledge in order to solve problems and multiply by multiples of 10. In addition we have reinforced how to mentally multiply a 2 digit number by a 1 digit number.

Science

We continued to learn about the life cycles of different creatures.

An update from P5

We have had a fun and busy week in P5 this week.

In Green Gym we were given various activities to choose from such as making bandanas using cloth and bit of leaves, grass etc. We used stones and rocks to rub the grass etc inside the cloth and then the colour rubbed off on to the cloth. We also got to build dens, make bird feeders and create little decorations using nails, wood and leaves etc.

In Digital learning we started off the lesson by discussing hardware and software and the differences between these.

Examples of hardware – phone, ipad, laptop, smartboard, computer, console.

Examples of software – apps, wifi, glow, games etc.

We also coded Hungry Snake, where we had to put eggs around the place for the snake to find, but if he touched a rotten egg then the snake had to disappear!

In Numeracy we finished off our data analysis work from last week. In one group we looked at interpreting data from a database and graphs and in the other group we looked at using tally charts to gain information.

In Reading we continued to work on clarifying unknown words in a text. We used our group texts this week and found some really interesting words!

Examples of words we clarified:

hazy, mangy, oblige, contraption, sorrow, particular, wistful, adamant.

We are working hard to do the final work on our Space topic. We have worked in groups again to research the last planets ready to present these and include these in our class encyclopedia.

In Writing this week we picked a different job role to write about. We had to start by making some notes on the job we wanted to write about. Mrs Hillan showed us an example for a nurse. We were given the opportunity to use laptops to research any information we weren’t sure of that we wanted to include.

In spelling this week we created word searches using our words. We also picked from a variety of our strategies such as spelling tennis, back writing and noughts and crosses.

In PE this week we had our second session of badminton skills where we practised different serves. We also went on to have a go at some short games.

Remember it is a holiday on Monday! Enjoy the long weekend!

This Week in P3

Literacy

Numeracy

This week, we were focusing on multiplication word problems. We had to use our critical thinking skills to help us understand what the question was asking. Additionally, we have been discussing different strategies to solve multiplication equations during Number Talks.

What have P6 been up to this week?

Literacy

We continued reading our group reading novels.

Maths

This week was ‘Data Handling’ focus week. We revised the different types of tables and graphs and then answered questions in order to show our understanding of them.

Health

Mental Health

As a warm-up we used our teamwork and communication skills to pass the hoop around the circle without breaking the chain.

We discussed what makes us feel stressed and strategies for dealing with this. Then we wrote these different strategies on the faces of a cube. We can roll this cube whenever we are stressed and the strategy can help us.

Leo volunteered to show the whole class his run onto the springboard and then his jump off it!

Kyle performs a star jump.

Lily-Elen performs an arabesque balance.

Coding

This week we  practised writing code with a loop, variable and repeat function.

Anton – In my game there are planes and hot air balloons flying everywhere. There is a spider hanging onto the hot air balloon and after  5 seconds it falls off. After 10 seconds the spider shows again and everything is back in the same place – this is the loop.

Oscar – My game is underwater and the fishes move around in different directions in a loop.
