Maths
This week we have been focusing on counting forwards and backwards in 10’s.  It sounds easy, but we sometimes find it a challenge counting backwards from a large number.  347, 337, 327, what comes next?

Language
Although it has been a short week, we have all been working hard on our reading skills and challenging ourselves with our word walls.  Please remember to bring them into school every day.  In handwriting, we have been practising joining the ‘th’ join – try writing as many th words as you can and remember to join ‘t’ onto ‘h’.

James and the Giant Peach topic

We have been writing invitations to parents and carers to come along and visit our class next week.  We are going to be sharing our learning about James and the Giant Peach.  This will be an opportunity for us to show you our giant peach and the creatures we have made, and to see around our classroom.  We look forward to seeing you on Thursday.

Families Connect

Today at our Families Connect group we looked ‘beyond the page’. We discussed different ways of telling stories using different things to give us ideas, such as, picture cards, magazine cuttings and signs in the community. We then looked at the cbeebies Storytime app and how we can use that to support learning with our children. Next week we will be taking part in numeracy activities.

Primary 3/4

It has been nice for us all to be back together and hearing all about our news from the holidays!! We have reminded ourselves of the expected standards in the classroom and how we must work hard to achieve the best results.

Primary 4 children have been learning to play handball in preparation for the tournament next Wednesday. Please ensure your child has a bottle of water and sports clothing to change into.

Primary 4

This week we have been developing skills in handball in preparation for the handball festival next Wednesday. Our teams will be playing in groups of 6 against other schools from the cluster. We have been thinking about team strategies and revising different types of passes. Could you please ensure that your child has their gym kit and a bottle of water with them for the event. Also, a wee reminder that we have weekly gym sessions on a Tuesday and a Friday as lots of pupils are coming with no gym kit on those days.

We have been working on poetry in literacy and have created some excellent Autumn themed poems. We thought carefully about how to use adjectives to create better description and we tried to use alliteration. Next week we will be working on some Autumnal art work to create a new class display.

We have been working on our 4 times tables and it would be great if pupils could continue to work on these at home. Pupils have also been developing skills in written addition and continue to develop strategies through Number Talks sessions.

The class are excited about the Halloween disco and we look forward to seeing everyone’s costume.

P5/6 Hallowe’en Writing

This week we used these pumpkins to help us to write a story. In our story we had to describe these pumpkins using a simile or metaphor.

The pumpkin was as enormous as a beach ball. (Alicia)

The pumpkin was a wrinkly granny (Caiden) (The pumpkins had been in the classroom for a few days so were looking a bit wrinkly!)

The pumpkin was as bony as a skeleton. (Charlie)

In my story the pumpkins were in the pumpkin patch and then they turned into a balls of fire! (Corey)

This week’s blog was written by Corey and Miss Aikman.

P1 and P2/1 having Fun

This week we have been learning all about the Fire Brigade and how they help our community.

.

Joseph and Lennon built their own model of a fire station.  Joseph said that the fire fighters were inside the station sliding down the pole getting ready to go to the house on fire.

Tadas, Elkie and Brendan made a building which was on fire. Brendan said that the fire fighters helped put out the fire but the building collapsed. They also built their own fire station.

Lennon designed and built his own fire hose to fight the flames.

Lewis and Aayan drew pictures of fire fighters in their special uniform. Lewis was most proud of the details on the helmet.

We have been learning how to contact the emergency services and also practising our addresses.

In gym this week we have been learning how to move around the gym in different ways. We were excellent at playing follow the leader and displaying all the different ways to move. Mark said ‘ I enjoyed doing bunny hops’. Ivy said ‘I like skipping and I enjoyed being the leader!’.

This week we have been writing about what we are going to dress up as for the School Halloween Disco. Here are some examples of our excellent work.

One of the main skills we have focused on this week during busy start is cutting. Ivy and Chloe had great fun holding their scissors properly and turning the paper to help them cut straight and wavy lines.

Nathaniel has been practising threading  to help his fine motor skills. We had to remember to go up and down and up and down in a pattern.

Jamielee and Rihanna have been practising writing tricky words. Jamielee said ‘ I to write on the big write board because it is cool’. Rihanna now feels confident when spelling some new tricky words.

Tyler and Scarlet have enjoyed playing snakes and ladders with each other. They took turns and practised their counting on skills when using a dice.

What a busy week it has been!

P5/6 Titanic Topic

We have began working on our new topic – The Titanic. We discussed the different classes of passengers who were on board the ship and compared their jobs, lifestyles, money and clothing. Miss Aikman allocated us a class (1st, 2nd or 3rd class) and we used the information we had learned to create our own passengers and families. Family Surnames were chosen by each group from a list of real life Titanic passengers.

P2 Reflection

Today we had our novel study assembly and we sadly say goodbye to the Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch. Primary 2 really enjoyed learning about how to make a healthy lunch and making up our own imaginative stories about living on an island and working in a lighthouse. We enjoyed using describing words to bring Mr, Mrs Grinling and Hamish the cat to life. We even made our own pesky seagulls! We also used drama activities to show how much we learned about the story.

We look forward to our next topic which is “Toys from the Past”
