Telling the time in Deans Den!!

It has been another busy week in Deans Den as the children are working hard to become independent learners. They are really enjoying their role as lead learners and take pride in being the line leader and group messenger. Well done boys and girls!!

In maths, we have been learning about time and exploring using clocks in our play. We discussed where we might see clocks and why it is important to learn to tell the time. Her are some of our answers:

” There was a clock in the hospital” Maddison

” Look there’s numbers on the clock” Max

“Clocks help us to tell the time” Charli- Mae

” I want to learn the time” Andrew

We will continue to practise this during group time. Have a lovely weekend.

P.E in P5/6

In P5/6, Primary 1 and Primary 5/6 did P.E together and used the bars on the side. We partnered up with a primary 1 and took turns using the turns.

We did questions about Australia’s fires and handled data.

We got new classwork on Education city.h

Latest News From Primary One

As part of participation Friday we visited our local shops to ask  if they would display our Reduce, Reuse, Recycle posters. We have been exploring the importance of recycling correctly and we know by doing so we can help to save our planet.  We hope people in the community will see the posters and be reminded of this important issue.  Some pictures below.

In an attempt to become more independent learners, we are beginning to self assess our work against curricular targets. We have began with writing. The children are aware of the 3 main targets and these targets are part of our writing success criteria.

When children are finished their work they traffic light it against the success criteria (red – still a bit tricky, yellow – getting there and green –  I’ve got it!) and put it in the appropriate tray. During this term we will also focus on different forms of Feedback and how we can use it to improve our work the next time.

We are continuing to enjoy Hamish McHaggis’s adventures as he travels around Scotland. We have been celebrating all things Scottish through art and design- making tartan patterns, using chalk to create thistles and starting to make Nessie puppets.

Lead Learners

The children are becoming more confident leading aspects of lessons. The pictures below show a number of children explaining how to partition 8 in a number of different ways.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend. More updates next week.

This week in P2

We have had another busy week in P2.

In P.E. we continued learning more gymnastics skills. This week, we were learning different types of rolls. We learned how to perform a forward roll, a teddybear roll and a pencil roll. These are tricky skills to master!

In Art, we focused on primary and secondary colours. We learned what the primary colours are and then we were set a challenge to see what secondary colours we could make by mixing the primary colours together. We were amazed to see the colours changing as we mixed them together!

Our shell art from last week has now been framed and all of our work looks absolutely beautiful. We are so proud of how well we did. You’ll even find some of our creations in the display cabinet outside of the gym hall.

One of our topic lessons this week involved recreating a story through drama. We read “Katie Morag and the Big Boy Cousins” and then worked collaboratively to tell the story through our own dramas. We discussed what makes a quality audience and then provided each team with strengths and next steps.

This week in science we began investigating the properties of materials. We had to work collaboratively and our communication skills were really put to the test when we found that we had differences in opinion. We loved investigating all of the different objects on the tables.

We practised our knowledge of French numbers to 20 this week by playing a game of Bingo. We had to choose 9 numbers between 0 and 20 and when Miss Borsbey called out a number in French we had to circle the number if we had it. It was so much fun!

We are continuing to practise our skills when telling the time. We have been working on identifying o’clock and half past on both digital and analogue clocks. Have a look at us playing a super fun time board game with our friends!

We are also continuing to work on our spelling, with each group learning a different sound each week. We love doing active spelling tasks and building words using different resources around the classroom. Our favourite resources include magnetic boards, beads and scoobies, and letter jigsaws. We have also been using these resources to build upon our knowledge of the alphabet. We are becoming really confident with the order of the alphabet, the number of letters and the identification of the 5 vowels. We have decided to play a short game of quizmaster every day so that we can keep practising!

P5 Interview an Engineer

Health

In Health we have been discussing the different impacts that jobs have on society and what the salaries of different jobs are. We were surprised how much a pilot earns compared to a mechanic even though people seem to use mechanics more regularly.

STEM

We watched a live online broadcast as part of the Scottish Leadership Engineering awards competition that we are entering. We listened to a presentation by Graeme Ralph, Principal R&D Engineer at Spirit AeroSystems. Afterwards we posted questions which he answered.

P.E. – Hockey

Miss Stanway was blown away by our dribbling skills!

Literacy

One of our class targets is to improve our punctuation and so we have been learning about the use of apostrophes which are necessary when using contractions.

Writing

We finished our Dinosaur stories that we had written COLLABORATIVELY in pairs and then learnt how to peer assess them using a West Lothian writing target grid.

Numeracy

The table fact we are presently focussing on is x4.

We are much more confident at using the grid method to multiply 2 digit numbers by two or one digit numbers.

In addition this week we learnt about factors and prime numbers.

Topic

Our new topic is Mary Queen of Scots. Using her family tree we learnt about who her relatives were.

Using role-play we learnt about key moments in her life.

Eva – Being executed was a sad way to die.

Emma – Marrying Darnley was a mistake because he was mean.

Chloe – She should not have married The Earl of Bothwell as people thought he was a murderer.

Keris – Bella was great at being Queen Mary.

Lacey (The Earl of Bothwell)  – I expressed my meanness through my face and body.

Art

We practised using a variety of tools to create different types of lines.

Hamish McHaggis visits P2/1

What a mysterious week we have had!  Late last week our friend Hamish McHaggis unexpectedly disappeared without a trace. It was the most peculiar thing. Nobody knew where he had gone to!!!

We made lost posters using fancy adjectives to describe him….but still no Hamish…..

We were beginning to get worried when all of a sudden Mrs Stevenson got an email from him. What a relief!

It turns out he’d been off on an adventure to Edinburgh…lucky Hamish. He sent us loads of pictures which helped us learn about some famous Edinburgh landmarks.

We especially loved the story of the Greyfriar’s Bobby dog. Some of us even decided to write our own stories about the little dog.

All of this drama has helped us to prepare for our class assembly. We have also been learning our national anthem ‘Flower of Scotland’ and have come up with some very imaginative actions to go alongside the words. As well as a song we have also learned to perform a Scottish country dance, it was great fun. We can’t wait to share it all with you tomorrow.

Update from Primary 3

This week P3 have been demonstrating how well they can read to Mrs Hillan by reading their group readers to her. We have some very fluent readers in P3, as well as some children experimenting with using expression. Keep it up Primary 3!!

In Numeracy this week we have been looking at counting on and counting back. We used some Interactive games online to support this. We had to use our communication skills and collaboration skills in order to work together on these games.

As part of our ‘Wee Tour of Scotland’ we have looked at Edinburgh and Stirling this week. We have worked collaboratively on the laptops to find information to create factfiles and leaflets. We will work hard to complete these next week as well as hopefully looking at another city in Scotland.

Next week we will be making shortbread with Mrs Wood after us writing our own instructions for how to make shortbread last week.

Primary 3 have been enjoying Zumba during our PE time. The pupils were great at following the routines! The children had the opportunity to select which Zumba tracks to follow. Hopefully next week we can maybe try individuals leading learning through our own freestyle Zumba!

Exciting new topics

We have been starting some exciting new topics this year.

For our topic work we have been looking at some Scottish comics and their characters. We hope to develop this. Watch this space! This will also contribute to our language work this term. We are also continuing our work on climate change.

In maths we have started looking at fractions, decimals and percentages. We have also been doing data handling and relating this to the warming of Australia and the deadly fires they have experienced.

Primary One Science Club

What a fun session we had today.  We were very lucky to have budding young scientist, Bella, come along to help us out. Thank you Bella for being such a great help.

Today we had a go at the skittles colours diffusion experiment which has been very prominent on the internet lately. First off we tried spacing the skittles out around a paper plate and then adding water on top of them, hoping to see the colours soak into the middle. This didn’t quite go to plan. We discussed some alternatives and decided to try warm water in the middle of the plate to see if it made a difference. We found out that when the water was warmer it worked much faster. It’s all about trial and error. It didn’t look quite how it did on the internet but we gave it our best and tried to improve our work when it didn’t quite work out! That’s what science is all about!

P6/7 – continuing to Grow our Business !

Following the success of Limited Edition Christmas Forkies in the last few weeks of term “Crafty” business decided to send a donation of £52 to Childline (this allowed for a dolls’ house to be purchased and 1 hour of counselling over the Christmas period).

Looking forward to the new term, P6/7 have decided to focus efforts on our upcoming Spring Fayre and the types of craft packs and Spring items that we might sell. Miss Taylor attended the Parent Council meeting on Tuesday evening, to represent the business, and to offer that P6/7 will be keen to sell goods, and to help support by being the sales teams on stalls from 12.30 – 1.30 on the day of the event (Friday 3rd April).

We have since discussed the budget we have available, and started to look at materials  and resources we may need.

We also spent time looking at our individual skills on My World of Work website. This has a section particularly for Primary Children where pupils can create their own profile and check their skills by completing a questionnaire. This then categorises everyone as a type of animal, suggests jobs that may be suitable for the future and also ways to develop skills now. This proved very popular with everyone and also cause some amusement as we had a number of bears , panthers, koalas and even a clownfish! Despite the humour, the questions asked, give a good insight to personalities and I believe a few parents have already had a go on Thursday evening”! Children can access this website from home now that they have been registered.
