Weekly Update From Primary One

Martha Fluharty Classroom

Hello and welcome to this weeks post. Some super learning to share with you!

This week in preparation for our narrative writing we enjoyed listening to the story of Little Red Riding Hood. The children began by tracking Little Red’s jounery through the forest and drew maps to detail her route. Some examples below-

Writing – Little Red Riding Hood

Once that was completed, the children wrote an imaginative story using the Little Red Riding Hood story as a stimulus. The children had to imagine that the wolf  wasn’t hiding in the bed , it was another animal. They had super ideas, some examples below-

We now have a new display which  hopefully will help the children focus on achieving their core writing targets.

Health and Wellbeing

Some super action shots of the children developing their skills during our Monday PE lesson.

In class, we have been reading the Colour Monster. The colour monster changes colour depending on his mood e.g. he is red when angry, yellow when happy, green when calm etc. The children have drawn their own monsters and we are going to use them in a corrider display (will post a picture of the completed display next week)

I hope you have a lovely weekend. I will be back next week with more updates.

This Week in P3

LiteracyIn reading this week, we have been developing our reciprocal reading skills. We also had to create questions about the text to ask a friend. We then had to identify the key details of the story in order to summarise the text.In writing this week, we continued to develop our narrative writing skills. We were using our imagination to create a story about a magic key. We had to read over our work to check that we had used our core writing targets.MathsIn maths this week, we were continuing to learn about time. We were focusing on o’clock and half past. Throughout, the day we would check the time on the analogue clock. In numeracy, we continued to look at subtraction. We were learning about the column subtraction method. This is where you take away the ones colum and then the tens. With some equations, we needed to regroup.IDLIn RME, we were looking at the Christan bible story. We were learning about Jonah and the whale. As a class, we had create a discussion about moral decisions Jonah had to make and what our personal views were on these decisions.

Welcome to this week’s  blog. It has been another busy learning week at Deans. Some highlights the children wanted to share with you.

Maths – Time

This week we have been learning to tell the time. We have been ordering days of the week, seasons and exploring months of the year. On Monday, we began to  focus on o’clock times and next week we will look at half past.  The children have made their own clocks and have been challenging each other to tell the time. Some action shots below-

This week we continued with our narrative writing genre and used The Three Billy Goats Gruff story to help us. Firstly, we read the story, then we sequenced it-

Then we used puppets to re-tell the story-

Next we re-told the first part of the story including the “who and where”-

Lastly we challenged each other to make a bridge big enough for the troll to fit under-

We have celebrated Rorbert Burns birthday this week by reading stories about Hamish McHaggis (ask your child to tell you about him). The children love hearing him speak Scottish, for example – “stop your blethering!”, “haud your wheesht!”. We have also attempted to create our own Deans tartan-

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I will be back next week with more updates.

This Week in Primary 5

This week in Primary 5 we have been busy filming our Sharing the Learning video to send out to our parents and carers to tell them all about what we are learning in Numeracy and Maths and how people at home can help us.

We have been working on dividing by 8 and 6, or showing the link between division and multiplication this week. One group had an opportunity to use a calculator with their tasks this week.

In Spelling this week, we practised our words by creating spelling flowers. This is where we write the word in the middle and then write the letters which make up the word on each petal. We also played noughts and crosses using our spelling words. Every time we got a word right, we got to put our nought or cross down!

In Writing we have continued our Narrative writing. This week we used an idea from watching an Author’s Live episode with Cressida Cowell who wrote the ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ books, where we drew a map first and then used this map to create a plan for an adventure story. Mrs Hillan showed us a few examples of maps, such as the map of Neverland. We will use these maps and plans to write our stories next week!

In Reading we made predictions again, based on where we are at in our group readers. It is interesting to see if our predictions are correct as we read on.

Lewis D – I predict that the tiger will turn out a different colour from the colour a tiger is meant to be.

Olivia – I predict that the children are going to be late to the palace because the police are going to stop them for too long.

Erin R – I predict that the crowd of people are not going to let the children past and the Queen will think they are not coming.

Kayleigh – I predict that Biff and Wilf got trapped and then the man took the Blue Eye.

Chloe – I think the man has the Blue Eye but the children get it again and they go back to the castle.

Sophie C – I predict that the ferris wheel will break down at the fair.

Since it was the celebration of Robert Burns on Tuesday, we talked about him, listened to some of his poems and did a little bit of research on him. We also designed our own tartans.

Writing – What Happened Next?

This week we  continued with our narrative writing genre. The children  had to use their imagination to descibe what might happen to Jack and his mum now that they have the golden goose. We had lots of great ideas including, buying a golden palace, getting Daisy the cow back, buying more farm animals etc. Some super examples below-

Learning Through Play

Part of our classroom has been turned into a doctors surgery complete with a reception and waiting area, an examination bed, PPE, bandages, plasters etc. The children absolutely love it and have had great fun bandaging each other up, listening to their heartbeats, taking x-rays etc.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend. I will be back next week with more highlights.

Weekly Update From Primary One

Happy New Year to you and your family. I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and managed to stay well.

Welcome to the first blog post of 2022. The children are  happy to be back at school and have settled  in well . The children have choosen some of this weeks work they would like to share with you-

Literacy – Writing

This term we are focusing on a new writing genre and  will be exploring narrative/descriptive writing.  To get us started we received a very important letter from Jack (from Jack and the Beanstalk) telling us that the giant had followed him down the beanstalk and had escaped. A picture of the glitter trail that led to a letter in our library corner.

We decided that we would we use our imagination to think about where the giant could be hiding and how he was feeling. The children came up with super ideas e.g. behind the beanstalk, on the roof, in the forest etc. We also had some great describing words when writing about how the giant  might be feeling, such as miserable, suprised and lonely. Some examples below-

Numeracy – Time

As well as our normal numeracy we are going to learn about time. We began by looking at daily routines and the children drew things  they do in the morning, afternoon and at night. This enables the children to link daily routines and personal events to time sequences. Some pictures below-

We have also really enjoyed reading and making hungry capterpillars to help us sequence the days of the week.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I will be back next week with more updates from Primary 1.

Update From Primary One

Free Merry Christmas Animations - Clipart - Graphics

Welcome to this weeks blog. The Deans Decision Makers have been busy creating STEM challenges for our school advent calendar. The first challenge was to go on a nature walk and look for patterns in the environment. The children took lots of pictures and identified lines of symmetry in a number of objects. On Tuesday, our challenge was titled “Dancing Salt” (sound waves and vibrations). We had to place clingfilm tightly over a bowl then put salt in the middle and place the speaker in different position around the bowl and watch the sound waves create vibrations. We discovered that salt was too light and rice was a good alternative.

On Wednesday the children had to make an igloo using marshmallows and cocktail sticks. This was tricky but as they worked together they managed to create small igloos. Some managed to make a roof and opening for a door.

On Thursday the challenge was to use marshmallows and spaghetti to build and measure a tower.

It got a bit tricky so the children made snowmen instead. It is nearly Christmas after all.

Lots of good discussion, problem solving and fun had by all!

This week we read a beautiful book called Little Robin Red Vest. It is the story of a kind little bird who gives away his 7 vests to his friends who need them.  On Christmas Eve he was cold and alone but Santa had been watching him and rescued him. Mrs Claus knits him a very special red vest and this is how the robin got his red breast. The children have drew robins for our winter display and designed vests. A lovely story well worth reading.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend . Not long to go now!

Welcome to this weeks blog. On Friday of last week the children took part in Participation Friday. This event happens once a month and enables the children to become more involved in the local community. In Primary 1, we will be  visiting local attractions in Deans and giving them a rating out of 5 stars. Some picture below of us visiting the park and feedback from the children.

They loved it with most of them giving it 5 stars!

Writing santa clus - Saint Athanasius Catholic Academy

As this week was the end of our  persausaive writing block we had a little fun! The children had to persude the reader that “Santa should visit me because……….” It was lovely to hear how kind and helpful they had been all year. Some super examples below-

I am sending their writing home for you to enjoy!

I hope you all have a lovely weekend. I will be next week with the last post of 2021!

P4/3 Learning Highlights this Week.

This week we have been getting into the festive spirit in our classroom. We have enjoyed opening the Deans decisions Makers advent calendar each morning. We have loved the fitness challenges and sharing what has been making us happy each day. We have also started researching all of the Victorian Christmas Traditions which we love to celebrate at this time of year. We worked together in pairs to use the internet and some research texts to find out as much as we can.

Here are some of the facts we found out-

Sometimes Victorians had a upside down Christmas tree hanging from their ceilings.

Candy canes were invented to keep children quiet during ‘living’ nativity scenes and the shape was to represent the shape of a shepherds crook.

Victorians sent the first Christmas cards and some Victorian Christmas cards were very strange!

We had a go at making our own Victorian decorations. We made Cornucopias and paper chains. Cornucopias are cone shaped decorations hung from a tree with ribbons and filled with delicious sweeties.

To complete our block of Persuasive writing we wrote letters to Santa to persuade him of how well behaved we have been this year. We had some fantastic arguments from the everyone. Here are some examples.

I have been helpful to my mum by cleaning the kitchen – Elkie

I have been helping by looking after my pets – Nathaniel

I have been helped my mum by watching my baby sister and letting mum have a wee rest – Lennon

We are fairly certain that Santa will have no choice but to deliver all of P4/3 amazing gifts this year.
