Latest Exciting News from Primary one

Our start award winner from last week was Viktor, he received his reward for displaying our school values by making everyone feel included.

We have had another visit from the dragon! We came back from lunch on Monday to find a trail of green glitter leading to 3 bears sitting beside 3 bowls of porridge.

From the clues we guessed that the dragon wanted us to read Goldilocks and the 3 Bears. We have had great fun reading and carrying out activities around the story. We created a story map using pictures to tell the story and we have completed 2 pieces of writing. The first one was a wanted poster. The children had to describe Goldilocks and where she was last seen. The second was a letter from Goldilocks saying sorry to the bears for going into their cottage without permission and causing damage. Some pictures below.

We are also creating an interesting wall display. Pictures in next weeks blog.  Great news our bean plants now have little shoots. This week we have explored the life cycle of the bean plant and are early tracking their progress!

A group of children worked really hard to sequence the story. They communicate, collaborated and problem solved (all skills from Developing the Young Workforce). They were very proud of the results.

We are continuing to look at different ways of displaying information. This week we created a pictogram using our eye colour  and a bar graph of animals in the zoo. The children can now identify just by looking at the graphs what is the most/least  popular and some can say how much more popular one is than another.

Almost all children are now leading some part of learning, and some are feeling confident enough to support others. See below.

Some of our highlights as described by the children.

Vrishti – “I enjoyed writing  the sorry letter to the bears”

Mark – “Number talks so that I can challenge myself”

Sophie “writing facts about Goldilocks for the wanted poster”

Archie – “writing sentences”

Louie – “using the big number line to count on and back”

Summer – ” learning our new l sound”

Connor ” reading fairytales”

We hope you can make it to our sharing the learning tomorrow. I will post pictures next week incase you are unable to come.

Have a lovely weekend.

P5 offer Emergency Assistance!

Health

Mrs Wallace helped us in health this week. We learnt about how to be calm if we were faced with an emergency.

Keris – I learnt how to do the recovery position.

Literacy

In group reading this week we practised using a dictionary to find the meaning of tricky words. Thinking about alphabetical order helped us to find the words quickly.

During a visit to the library, we found some books about our new topic, WWII.

In pairs, we searched the contents page of a WWII book and choose an area to research. Initially when we read the pages there were some quite complicated words so we used the strategies we had practised to work out the meaning of these words.

This week in spelling we learnt how to spell the past tense of irregular verbs and we also learnt how to use the apostrophe for possession.

Numeracy

In number talks this week we have started to discuss efficient multiplication strategies.

We practised converting decimals and fractions to percentages and some of us practised finding 50 per cent of a quantity.

Topic – WWII – Drama

We learnt about children who were evacuated from their homes during the war. During drama we used pair and group role-plays to show how the children and their families would be feeling.

Lewis – I learnt that evacuees were evacuated to the countryside.

Logan – I learnt that the U.K.used propaganda posters to help win the war.

Georgie – We designed our own WWII propaganda posters.

We were able to use our art skills and make links to our learning about persuasive writing.

R.M.E.

We learnt about one of the parables that Christians believe Jesus told in order to teach people how to live their life. It was called ‘The Prodigal Son.’ When we had watched a cartoon version of the story we discussed the moral of the story and wrote a recount of the events in our book.

Afterwards we watched a clip of Veruca Salt from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and discussed the meaning of this modern day parable!

P.E.

This week we all (especially Miss Stanway) thoroughly enjoyed an enthusiastic game of Dodge Ball!

World Book Day – whole school competition!

World Book Day was an exciting event for us this week with almost all children and staff wearing their pyjamas to school, bringing a favourite book and a cuddly toy to snuggle up with! The WBD theme this year was “Share a story” so we had 3 different opportunities to have “time out with teddy” over the course of Thursday.

We were thrilled to have over 60 children bring in stories in a box / pictures for our whole school competition! There has clearly been lots of thought and creativity gone into these, and we are especially pleased how many children were enthusiastic about it having been a family learning opportunity!

Our local Librarian is coming into school tomorrow to judge these and will have a difficult time choosing a winner from each class! The winners will be announced on Friday at assembly, and will receive a £10 Waterstones gift card!

All of the Reading Ambassadors leadership group would like to thank everyone for taking part and making it a successful day!

P5 enjoy Drama and World Book Day

Drama

On Thursday morning we had a drama workshop.

Maia – I enjoyed it because we got to be pirates and it was funny when we were scared.

Shantelle – It was fun, exciting and very funny.

Lacey – Everyone was scared of me and Mason.

Monika – The very last bit was funny because Mason and Lacey got scared and they put their knees together.

WORLD BOOK DAY

During the day we had lots of opportunities to read quietly. In the afternoon we went to visit P3/4 and discussed our favourite books. Then we listened to our buddy read their book aloud. We were very impressed with their reading!

Literacy

In group reading this week we practised answering ‘HOT’ questions – higher order thinking. An example of this type of question would be : ‘What words and phrases has the author used to show how the character is feeling?’ Some children were lucky enough to work with Mrs Stewart this week!

We practised improving our cursive style in handwriting.

In spelling we practised adding ‘ing’ to words. Most words you just add ‘ing’ but some words have special rules!

Numeracy

We learnt how to change fractions into decimals. Initially we practised converting tenths then we moved onto changing hundredths.

In order to compare the decimals we practised placing them on a number line.

In order to apply what we had learnt we used the laptops to play decimal games.

Princess – I enjoyed learning about decimals.

Mohamad – I enjoyed maths because it was challenging.

Aleena – I learnt how to change a fraction into a decimal.

More us have beaten our scores on ‘Big Maths’ this week.

P.E.

We played an unusual game this week. In order to score each team had two opposite corners of the room with goals in. It was a little bit confusing. Some of us scored lots of own goals!

On Thursday we had to do P.E. in the classroom and so we did a mixture of fitness and zumba activities. Liam led the dancing and we were very impressed. It was great fun!

Art

This week we have started to learn about tone. Tone means darkness or lightness of colour. We looked at and discussed a picture by Edward Hopper called Nighthawks, which demonstrates tonal contrast. We practised using tone to create 3d objects then we used red and white paints to create a gradual tonal strip. Mixing white to a colour creates a tint.

Samuel – I learnt about shading.

Georgie – I enjoyed painting from darkest to lightest.

Eva – I learnt how to lean on the pencil to make it dark.

Latest News From Primary One

We have had such a busy week in Primary 1. We have had another visit from the dragon and celebrated World Book Day.

Our star award winner from last week was Layla. Well done and keep up the good work Layla!

We have read Jack and the Beanstalk and have been taking part in lots of activities centered around the story. This weeks smart start included bean counting, escape the giant (subtraction activity) and matching dots patterns on beans to numbered flower pots. Some pictures below.

We have also been planting bean seeds (hopefully we will all have small beanstalks to take home) and will be recording their growth and learning about the life cycle of  beans and other plants.

We have been using our imaginative writing skills. Our first writing task was to think about what we would do if we found a magic bean. Some pictures of our thoughts and ideas.

In our second piece of writing we had to think about why we would climb a beanstalk and what we might find at the top.

We also had a another visit from the dragon. So so exciting! He is really pleased with our progress so far and left a present. Castle booklets for everyone to write plans, thoughts and ideas in. Our first entry was about how we felt when we knew the dragon had visited our classroom.

In maths we have been looking at different ways to display information and we thought it would be a good idea to make a graph about out favourite flavour of jelly beans. Blueberry was the clear winner.

Lastly a big thank you to the children who took part in our World Book Day competition- Emily, Louie, Sophie and Connor. A fantastic effort! We all enjoyed sharing our favourite stories with our favourite toys and each other.

More updates from Primary I and the dragon next week. Have a lovely weekend.

Another busy week for P3/4!

P.E

We continued with our block of athletics. This week the children were learning about throwing for height and distances. To warm ourselves up we played a game of human skittles. This allowed the children to understand the different kind of throws that are needed in different situations. It also gave the children an opportunity to revise their jumping skills as the balls were rolling towards them.

Maths

This week the children continued exploring money. The learning this week focused on subtraction from a total amount, this also links in with what we are learning in our numeracy work. This will help the children to deepen their understanding of how money works when we start with an amount and then we purchase something we end up with less. Maybe the children can use this knowledge when spending their pocket money!

Topic

P3/4 and P3 came together this week to rehearse the final run through of their t.v adverts. The children were given the opportunity to expand their skills in listening and talking, collaboration and leadership within this lesson. After, the children then performed their adverts to the class. These performances were recorded and played back to them the following day. The children all done an amazing job convincing their audience why people should visit Glasgow.

Sharing The Learning

P3/4 and I would like to say thank you again to all of the parents/carers that joined us on Tuesday afternoon for our sharing the learning session. The children really enjoyed having you all there. The focus of this lesson was exploring persuasive language and looking at how we can do this in an advertisement. The children and parent/carers were as to create a poster convincing tourists to swap the high temperatures and to spend some time in our beautiful country. The end results of this tasks were fantastic, so a massive well done from me! There was some great taglines using persuasive language and the pictures were detailed and bright of some of the amazing landmarks that this country has to offer.

Another great week P3/4! See you all again on Monday!
