Highland Clearances in P5/6

This week in P5/6 we got a nasty surprise when the laird appeared in our village and told us we had to leave our homes within 3 days. The land was needed for sheep and our rent was overdue.

This made us sad, angry and disappointed. We decided to write to the laird to convince him to let us keep our homes. We discussed persuasive language and used this to compose letters.

Later we  worked as a group and thought about what we would do if we actually had to leave. What would we take? Why? Where would we go and why? Lots of discussion and decision making took place.

*ATTENTION P6 and P7 PARENTS*

We have a very exciting opportunity coming up at Deans Primary. We are going to be holding a parent and child first aid course in school on Friday 22nd March from 9:30am-12:30pm. This will be run by staff from the Low Port Centre and we are sure this will be a very valuable experience for all those involved. There is no charge to parents/carers for this.

Spaces are very limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you would like to participate with your child please return the slip in your child’s bag to school office as soon as possible.

Mindfulness

In p5/6 we have been taking part in daily mindfulness. We were very lucky this week as Mrs Moyes brought up our school guinea pigs to join us.

Our mindfulness story focused on spending some time on the beach – here are some of the things we saw.

Millie – I saw dogs

Tayle – I was playing with a beachball

Arran – I saw Whales.

Liam – I saw a blue whale and a great white shark.

As a class we have seen many benefits to our daily mindfulness. These include being calm and relaxed as well as more positive and focused.

Art in P5/6

We have created a display of artwork showcasing our skills of using oil pastels and black pen and our knowledge of the style of the art work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Many thanks to all of our parent’s/carers and family members who came to watch our performance of 1719 yesterday – we had great fun performing for you all!

Oor Wullie and other delights

We have enjoyed creating our own Oor Wullie stories. We used tableaux in drama and took photographs of them. We got our ideas from magazines and cartoon strips. It was really fun.

We have been working on long division in maths and continuing with our mental maths and practising our tables with Big Maths Beat That etc.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh

P5/6 have been looking at the works of Scottish artist/architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. We looked at example of his work and discussed their features.

We then sketched some of the these features in our sketch books.

We will then use these ideas to create our own art work inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Brilliant Baking

As a special end of term treat  P5/6 took part in some baking today. Everyone worked well in their groups, weighing and measuring out all the ingredients. The pupils enjoyed the experience – especially getting to eat them after all their hard work!

Nearly Christmas!

We had fun selling all these stress balls and Christmas crackers at the fayre.

This week we did a lot of maths and we looked at Bob Ross, which we might do in the future.

Primary 6/7 have been doing a new thing with “Around the World” when we use it to practise our mental maths.
