P5/6 Hallowe’en Writing

This week we used these pumpkins to help us to write a story. In our story we had to describe these pumpkins using a simile or metaphor.

The pumpkin was as enormous as a beach ball. (Alicia)

The pumpkin was a wrinkly granny (Caiden) (The pumpkins had been in the classroom for a few days so were looking a bit wrinkly!)

The pumpkin was as bony as a skeleton. (Charlie)

In my story the pumpkins were in the pumpkin patch and then they turned into a balls of fire! (Corey)

This week’s blog was written by Corey and Miss Aikman.

P5/6 Titanic Topic

We have began working on our new topic – The Titanic. We discussed the different classes of passengers who were on board the ship and compared their jobs, lifestyles, money and clothing. Miss Aikman allocated us a class (1st, 2nd or 3rd class) and we used the information we had learned to create our own passengers and families. Family Surnames were chosen by each group from a list of real life Titanic passengers.

P5/6 Novel Study

This term we have been enjoying reading our exciting class novel ‘The Nowhere Emporium’ by the Scottish author Ross MacKenzie. We have all written a  wonder in our class Book of Wonders – will any of them come true? (Miss Aikman hopes hers does!)

P5/6 Art

This week in Art we created a small sketch book  (lots of folding was involved!)  where we began to sketch  some pictures of The Titanic. We  gave each other feedback on how to improve our original sketches and used this feedback to sketch make our next sketch even better

P5/6 Poetry

P5/6 have been discussing the poem ‘In the Dark’. We looked at the language used by the poet and discussed how the images he was describing matched with what we saw in our own bedrooms at night. We then drew pictures based on our discussions.

Budding Engineers!

We had a visit from Mr Leckie, a civil engineer from Aecom, who came to present certificates and prizes to some of our pupils for their innovative entries in the ‘Imagineers’ competition. The pupils had to come up with an invention that could help solve a problem in the world – our winners included ‘ The helping hand’ which is a robot that distributes medicine in remote or war torn areas, the ‘Plastic Picker’ which trawls the bottom of the ocean removing and recycling plastic and the ‘Automatic Claw 31000’ which scans and sorts rubbish to promote recycling. Well done everyone!!

PE Week Beginning 14th May

This week we all started our new topics in PE. WE are now learning about fitness.

Each class had a chat about what the word ‘fitness’ means to them. Each class mentioned a healthy diet and exercise. We talked about different types of fitness and discussed if we had a favourite way to exercise.

Primary 5 warmed up by stretching and going for a jog. They then worked different muscle groups through exercises. They worked with partners to do 10 sit ups at a time – the partners held their feet down to make sure the sit up was effectively working the abdominal muscles. They then worked their chest, arm and shoulder muscles by doing press ups – they chose which type of press up they were most comfortable with. They moved on to trying out burpees, mountain climbers, and finally, they ended with a plank competition!

Primary 5 Maths

Primary 5 have been learning to:

  • design a house using a scale – 1m = 2 boxes
  • build the house, using bricks, following the design
  • researched house prices to work out how much the house would sell for
  • used descriptive language to describe some of the rooms for a brochure

Bathroom

As you walk into the bathroom you will see a shiny white bath with a good quality built in shower along with a squared shower drape. The toilet is a nice grey shade with a black toilet seat. Moving on to the sink, it is a beautiful black sink along with black taps. The walls are a lovely pastel shade and it also comes with a blue checked floor. The heater has a nice warmth from it and it is in good condition. Moving on to the lighting, it has a good glow, energy saving light bulb required. The window has a hard wood base surrounded with strong glass.

PE Week Beginning 16th April

In PE this week Primary 1 have been learning ball skills. We rolled sponge balls down our arms and legs and back up over our heads using our fingertips! This was much trickier than it sounds! We were throwing and catching small balls with two hands and challenging ourselves by trying to throw and catch using only one hand. We even tried doing this while walking around the gym hall! We also worked in pairs to practise our throwing and catching.

Primary 2, 2/3, 5, 6, 6/7 and 7 have been learning about athletics. We know that athletics involves running, jumping and throwing events. As we took part in long distance running and sprinting last week it was time for us to have a go at jumping this week. We tried out long jump, high jump and triple jump. We tried each jump without a run up, recorded our distance and then tried again with a run up, we were amazed at the difference having a run up makes! We spoke about the personal and physical qualities needed for athletics events and discussed which events we think we would enjoy most.
