Fractions in P5/6

In P5/6 we are learning about equivalent fractions.

Today we made posters to show our understanding of them!

We had to choose from 3 fractions to make a poster – 1/2, 1/3 or 1/5.

We had to think about the different patterns made with the numerator and denominator when coming up with equivalent fractions.

P5 Basketball Festival

On Wednesday P5 took part in the cluster Basketball Festival at DCHS. All pupils showed great team work and super sportsmanship. They also showed fantastic improvement in their basketball skills.

Many thanks to all our adult helpers who accompanied us to the festival.

Here are our proud players with their certificate.

Fractions in P5/6

In maths we explored fractions using numicon. Pupils worked in groups to show the different ways to represent a fraction.

This led to lots of rich discussion around the relationship between multiplication, division and fractions. We also discovered which numbers could not be used to represent certain fractions and discussed the reasons why.

Highland Clearances in P5/6

This week in P5/6 we got a nasty surprise when the laird appeared in our village and told us we had to leave our homes within 3 days. The land was needed for sheep and our rent was overdue.

This made us sad, angry and disappointed. We decided to write to the laird to convince him to let us keep our homes. We discussed persuasive language and used this to compose letters.

Later we  worked as a group and thought about what we would do if we actually had to leave. What would we take? Why? Where would we go and why? Lots of discussion and decision making took place.

Mindfulness

In p5/6 we have been taking part in daily mindfulness. We were very lucky this week as Mrs Moyes brought up our school guinea pigs to join us.

Our mindfulness story focused on spending some time on the beach – here are some of the things we saw.

Millie – I saw dogs

Tayle – I was playing with a beachball

Arran – I saw Whales.

Liam – I saw a blue whale and a great white shark.

As a class we have seen many benefits to our daily mindfulness. These include being calm and relaxed as well as more positive and focused.

Art in P5/6

We have created a display of artwork showcasing our skills of using oil pastels and black pen and our knowledge of the style of the art work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Many thanks to all of our parent’s/carers and family members who came to watch our performance of 1719 yesterday – we had great fun performing for you all!
