Literacy
This week in reading, we have been continuing to develop our reciprocal reading skills. During our class novel ‘Charlotte’s Web’, we were stopping at various points in the novel to made predictions. We had to provide evidence to support our predictions. We also creates questions about the chapter to ask to our friends.
This week in writing, we were continuing to develop our narrative writing skills. We had to read our feedback from last week and apply it to this week’s written piece. We then created a plan for our stories ensuring that our writing followed an appropriate structure.
Maths
In maths this week, we continued to learn about fractions. We were learning about thirds, sixths and eighths. We have been drawing shapes and colouring a given fraction. We linked our fractions to our world our work topic as we were working in a pizza parlour. The customer would write the fraction of pizza they would like to buy and the chef would need to cut the pizza into the correct fraction.
It has been another quick and busy week as we near the end of our time together in P4/3. The children have adapted well to change and enjoyed meeting their new teachers for next term. Mrs Morrison is proud of you all.
Health and Well-Being
We continued our ‘Changing Me’ topic and explored how our bodies change as we get older. The children displayed great maturity discussing the subject and both Mrs Morrison and Ms Webster were proud of them all. Well done P4/3!
Literacy and Numeracy
We have revised our writing skills as the children created their own imaginative stories. Mrs Morrison enjoyed reading them.
We revised our mental numeracy strategies that we have worked on during our number talks lessons. Keep practising P4/3!
Next week is our last week together and what a journey it has been. I am so proud of each and every one of them as they have adapted so well to the changes that have occurred throughout the year. Well done P4/3!
Literacy
We have been learning to spell our new spelling words accurately. We have also been practising our words daily through rainbow writing, Play-Doh writing and quizzing our friends.
In writing this week, we were developing our skills to create a narrative piece of writing. We had to look at our feedback from last week to develop our writing. This week, we had to write about getting lost. We used our plans to develop the characters, settings and story line.
In reading, we were developing reading with expression. We were echo reading which is when the teacher would read a page with expression and we would echo it back in the same way.
Maths
In numeracy this week, we started our new topic about fractions. We have been looking at wholes, halves and quarters. We have been splitting shapes into these factions and also writing fractions.
We also had to colour a shape representing a whole, half or quarter. We then gave the worksheet to a friend and they had to write the fraction of the shape shown. After they had wrote their answers, we had to mark the sheet and give peer feedback.
IDL
During our world of work topic, we were learning about interviews. We were learning about how to apply for an interview, what type of questions will be asked and how we should dress.
During art, we were using watercolours to add shading and texture to our landscapes of Edinburgh. We were experimenting with the paints to make different colours using the primary colours, black and white.
Another busy week in P4/3! We continue to work on improving our literacy and numeracy skills. Well done to those children who have worked hard to become independent learners, Mrs Morrison is proud of you all!!
Literacy
We continue to work on our listening and talking skills, in particular presenting information in front of others. Here are some more pictures:
Numeracy
We have begun to look at fractions and explored what half and a quarter of an object would look like. We have also looked at the written form. Please practise with your child.
Health and Well-Being
We have started our new topic, ‘Changing Me’ and looked at what babies need to survive, from their time in the womb and when they are born. The class contributed to discussions in a mature manner, well done P4/3!
Literacy
We continued to develop our skills for narrative writing. We had to write an imaginative story about an accident. We used the narrative story mountain which helps us to develop our story line. We learned about the complication which is the part that makes the reader want to read on.
“We had to write in paragraphs and use the correct structure.”
We have also been learning to use a dictionary to find the meaning of words. During reading, we were sounding out unfamiliar words. We were also developing reading with expression. After we read our stories we had to ask our friends a questions about the text to enhance our questioning skills.
Maths
This week, we were continuing to develop our division skills. We were looking at word problems which can be challenging because you are not given the equations. We have to use our problem solving skills to work out what the question is asking and then solve the equation.
“We have been dividing, this is another way of saying sharing.”
“We have been dividing in 2s, 3s, 4s and 10s.”
“We were working as bakers and we had to divide the cakes equally between the people.”
IDL
In IDL, we were looking a city landscapes. We were looking at the detail and texture of the buildings. Then, we looked some examples of landscapes and we were given the opportunity to choose a landscape of Edinburgh to represent.
For our world of work topic, we were identifying our skills and linking them to jobs we would like. Then, we had to prepare notes to explain the type of job we would like to our peers.
It has been another busy week in P4/3. We made the most of the sunshine and took our learning outside. Some children presented their class talks out on the field, here are some pictures;
More photos to follow next week.
Numeracy
We continued to develop our understanding of division and looked more at solving division word problems. Some children challenged themselves to look at division sums with remainders. Well done P4/3! Next week we will look at fractions.
Literacy
We explored the new writing genre of Narrative writing. We discussed what kind of writing this would entail and discovered that if we wanted to become the next JK Rowling or Roald Dahl, then we would need to be familiar with and practise this type of writing. We will work on improving our imaginative writing over the next few weeks.
Health and Well-Being
We continue to explore friendships and the different ways to be a good friend. Next week we will introduce a new topic, ‘Changing Me’ where will explore the changes in our body.
I will update the blog next week, have a great weekend when it comes!
Literacy
We were learning to improve our vocabulary during Word Boost. We were introduced to 6 boost words and their meaning. When we hear a boost word, we have to put our finger on our nose and explain the meaning of the word. We also played the miming game, this is where one person has to mime out the boost word and the class have identify what the boost word is.
We were also developing our skimming and scanning skills during our reading comprehension. This is where we have to identify the key words within the question and skim read the text to find the answer.
For writing this week, we started learning about narrative writing. We were introduced to the structure we have to use for this genre and we created a narrative piece in small groups. Afterwards, we peer assessed each groups work and identified the areas of success and areas that they could improve on.
Maths
This week, we continued to develop our division skills. We were using our jotters to solve equations from the textbook. During number talks, we looked at division word problems. This is challenging as you have to initially work out what the question is asking you to do. We then discussed the different strategies we could use to calculate the answer.
IDL
For art this week, we were creating various landscapes. We were using pencils and we had to use different techniques to create different textures.
P4/3 have enjoyed another successful week of learning and Mrs Morrison is proud of her class. We were lucky to have Mrs Stewart visit our class this week, where we demonstrated our knowledge of explanation writing. We explained the purpose of the writing and presented our information in paragraphs. Great job, P4/3!
Numeracy
We began our new topic of division and learned that dividing means to share groups equally. Some children used concrete materials to demonstrate their understanding, whilst others began to work out division problems. We also looked at the connection between division and multiplication. Please practise dividing by 2,5 and 10. Homework sheets will be sent home on Monday.
Literacy- Class Talks
Presenting information in front of others can be a nerve-wracking experience and as a class we discussed how some people are more confident than others at delivering this skill. However, we are all willing to give this a go and support and encourage each other. Well done to Isla and Ethan who presented their talks and answered questions from their friends. I look forward to listening to other children next week.
Have a lovely weekend and I will check in with you again next Friday.
Literacy
We have been practising our spelling words this week. We have been practising using our rainbow writing, playdoh writing and writing our words on a whiteboard with our eyes closed.
For writing this week, we were writing an explanation for the role of a firefighter. We had to take notes when we were researching the role. These notes helped us add detail to our explanation sequences.
Numeracy
This week, we began our new division topic. Dividing is a way of sharing something. We were learning about different strategies we could use to help us solve an equation. We could use our fingers to skip count. We would count the number of fingers we have up and that would be our answer.
We could also draw circles and then draw dots to share within the circles. We would share these equally and count the amount of dots in the circle.
IDL
For our world of work topic, we began researching the jobs we would like to have when we are older. We had to research the skills and attributes required for these roles.
