P3 Sharing the Learning

Thank you to all the parents, friends and family members who came along to support the children with their learning this week.

We had a lot of activities to try including making seagulls, making wax resist ladybirds, using comic life on the laptops, trying stop frame animation, playing games and making Empire State Building pictures.

We showed our stop frame animation of the peach travelling over the Atlantic Ocean.  If you haven’t seen it, you can click on the link and watch it here.

P3 Sharing the Learning Event

Maths
This week we have been focusing on counting forwards and backwards in 10’s.  It sounds easy, but we sometimes find it a challenge counting backwards from a large number.  347, 337, 327, what comes next?

Language
Although it has been a short week, we have all been working hard on our reading skills and challenging ourselves with our word walls.  Please remember to bring them into school every day.  In handwriting, we have been practising joining the ‘th’ join – try writing as many th words as you can and remember to join ‘t’ onto ‘h’.

James and the Giant Peach topic

We have been writing invitations to parents and carers to come along and visit our class next week.  We are going to be sharing our learning about James and the Giant Peach.  This will be an opportunity for us to show you our giant peach and the creatures we have made, and to see around our classroom.  We look forward to seeing you on Thursday.

Primary 3/4

It has been nice for us all to be back together and hearing all about our news from the holidays!! We have reminded ourselves of the expected standards in the classroom and how we must work hard to achieve the best results.

Primary 4 children have been learning to play handball in preparation for the tournament next Wednesday. Please ensure your child has a bottle of water and sports clothing to change into.

Our first term of Primary 3/4

We have been reflecting on our learning from the start of the term. One of the most interesting things has been reading the BFG by Roald Dahl.  We have enjoyed listening to the story and developing our writing skills by taking notes and presenting our information in paragraphs.

Another area we have been focussing on is how we receive feedback and the different ways feedback can improve our learning. “My feedback is to improve my handwriting and the layout of my work”  (Hope)

Our focus in the gym hall has been to travel safely and improve our co-ordination skills. ” I can control the ball with a hockey stick” (Liam)

Our focus in numeracy this term has been to work with numbers up to 10, 000 and to recognise place value.” Primary 4 children have been using the textbook and have enjoyed working out word problems.”  (Cameron)

Our motto for next term is to “continue to work hard but with less chatting!” (Lewis)

P3 Art

We have finally reached the part in our novel, James and the Giant Peach, when the peach lands on the Empire State Building in New York.  We have been looking at the shape and form of skyscrapers, and in art this week, we have been making line drawings of the Empire State Building.
“it was hard at first, but it’s fun”  “can we try this again?”

We think our drawings are all unique – we hope you like them.

Den Activity

Today Mrs Moyes’ group worked very hard. We had to look through lots and lots of letters to find the letters which make up our names. We then stuck them onto paper. We challenged ourselves by also finding the letters to make our last names with a little support Mrs Moyes. We really enjoyed this activity!

P3 use Comic Life in ICT

One of the highlights of the day today was using the comic life program on the laptops to make a comic strip.  We used some of the photographs we took when we made the peach crumble last week.  Although we need to finish off our comics, the children were very enthusiastic and commented “it was great fun”  “it was hard at first”  “can we do this again?”.

Our next step will  be to add speech bubbles to our comic pages.

Weekly update from Primary 3/4

It has been another busy week in class. We have been learning to be a good friend and how making the correct choices can benefit the whole class. We had a lovely afternoon making compliment clouds and they have  certainly brightened up the classroom!!

A big focus this week has been to improve the quality of our writing pieces. We are learning the different ways of taking notes and how this can help transfer our ideas into paragraphs. We are proud of our progress and our next steps is to peer and self assess our writing pieces, using a range of strategies.

P3 Get Cooking

P3 made peach crumble as part of the James and the Giant Peach topic.  In writing we wrote out the recipe.  Then in the afternoon, after we washed our hands, we got started making our peach crumble.

We made two crumble dishes, one with  fresh peaches and  one with tinned peaches.  We compared the similarities and the differences between them.

First we put the peaches in the dish, then we weighed the flour, sugar and margarine.  We mixed them together and put the crumble mix onto the peaches.  We baked the crumble in the oven for 30 minutes.  After it cooled, we all had a taste of each crumble.  Most people in the class preferred the tinned peach crumble.

Autumn Leaves

Primary 3 went for a lovely Autumn walk this week and we collected some leaves.  We have been learning to write acrostic poems and we used the words leaf and leaves for our poems.  We made leaf rubbings with crayons, and we have created a lovely display in our classroom.
