Deans Den

Many thanks to all visitors who came to help celebrate Dean’s Primary School 50th birthday. It was very well attended and our visitors were impressed with the children’s learning and classroom environments.

This week in Deans Den we have been focusing on how to be a good friend and how our actions and words may affect others. We read the story of The Rainbow Fish and learned how important it is to share with others. With a little help from Mrs Morrison, the boys and girls are trying to demonstrate this skill during their time in the den and also in the primary one classrooms.

We are all excited to be taking part in the school nativity and we had our first listen to some of the songs we have to practise. A lot of hard work and fun ahead in the coming weeks!!

Primary 2/1 Learning Breakfast.

On Tuesday we held our Learning Breakfast and what a success it was! It was lovely to open up our classroom to all of our parents and carers to share and demonstrate the super learning which takes place on a daily basis.

We started off our morning in the dinner hall with the most delicious breakfast of pancakes, croissants and fruit, all made by our talented dinner ladies – Thank you so much for feeding us all!

It is safe to say the Primary 2/1 pupils gave the breakfast a big thumbs up!

After we had filled our tummies we went back to the classroom to share some of our Numeracy Learning.  We were able to share what we were learning, how we were learning and why. It was great to be able to demonstrate our addition skills, counting and sequencing in tens and all the ways we can use Numicon.

A great big thank you to all the parents and carers who attended on Tuesday. Thank you for your continued support of our school.

Deans Den update!!

It has been another busy week in Deans Den. We continue to work on improving our listening skills as this is a very important skill to master . When you listen well, learning can take place!! One area of learning that has been a success this week is developing our pencil control. Andrew was proud of his detailed colouring of the number 4 and said ” I’m not scribbling.” Well done Andrew!!

The boys are girls are excited to have snack time together and we made a shopping list of the different foods we would like to enjoy. Some suggestions included apples, bananas and crackers.

As it was bonfire night this week we talked about the different ways of keeping safe but still enjoying the fireworks. We were lucky to have a visit from Fire Officer Steel who talked to us about his job and we enjoyed asking him questions too.

Friday is a special day for Deans Primary School as we celebrate it’s 50th birthday. We look forward to sharing our learning with you, hope to see you all tomorrow!!

Primary 2/1 Update!

It has been an exciting week so far in Primary 2/1 as we prepare to celebrate our schools’ 50th Birthday on Friday! We have been talking about birthdays and what they mean to us. We talked about what month our birthdays are in and we even got to celebrate Miss Swanson’s special birthday on Monday!!

This week we have been learning all about why we celebrate Bonfire Night. We learned about Guy Fawkes and his plans to blow up parliament. We shared all of our plans for the evening and even designed a special poster to raise awareness of how to keep ourselves safe. We were lucky enough to have a special visit from Fire Officer Steel who did a fabulous job of explaining all about his job and he also gave us some hints and tips on how to stay safe from fire.

Seeing it was bonfire night we wanted to explore lots of different media to create some fantastic art for our classroom.

We used salt, paint and PVA glue to design a firework picture.  It was tricky to create an explosion picture but the end result looked great.

We also cut up cotton buds and dipped them in various colours of paint and glued them onto a black background to create more firework explosion pictures. This was extremely tricky but it also       helps us to develop our fine motor skills too!

At the end of the day we went into the playground to create a whole class piece of art. We used a massive sheet of black paper and covered it in stripes of glue. We had such fun then throwing handfuls of glitter over the glue. Here is our finished product….

Homework superstars this week – Alfie and Archie with their fantastic 3D firework models . The boys were confidently able to share to the class how they went about building their models and which 3D shapes they used! Well done!

This week’s sound focus has been on the vowel ‘a’. We learned all about Inky’s vowel house and how this is a black tunnel sound coming from the back of our mouths. We did lots of fun activities to help us practise recognising and writing our new sound.

In numeracy we are practising counting in steps of 10 and 5. We have been using the 100 square to identify patterns and help us to count both forwards and backwards. Keep practising at home!

We are very much looking forward to opening up our classroom on Friday morning to showcase all of our super learning in the year 2019.

Busy times in Deans Den!!

It has been another busy week in Deans Den. We continue to work hard on improving our listening skills, which we know will help us with our learning. We also got together around the snack table to decide how best to behave when enjoying snack. Here are some of the suggestions:

“We all wait and behave at the snack table” Charlie- Mae

“Close your mouth when you are eating” Andrew

“Help to tidy up after snack” Maddison

“Use quiet voices at the snack table” Max

“Always use your manners” Mrs Morrison

Snack menus will be sent home next week. Please have a look in your child’s bag and if there are any dietary concerns, please talk to Mrs Morrison as soon as possible.

Latest News from Primary One

Each week Primary 1 will be sharing their learning with you through our class blog. This week we enjoyed sharing our holiday experiences and drew some super detailed pictures of places we visited and activities we took part in.

Literacy

We have been working hard to learn 2 new sounds – s and p. To help us with our letter formation we have created “Sammy Snakes” and “Popcorn P’s” (fantastic sensory experience!).

We are learning about our story book characters Kipper, Biff, Chip and of course Floppy the dog! The children are enjoying discussing their adventures and are beginning to recognise some of the words (big thank you for all your support with homework tasks)

Numeracy

This week we have been focusing on creating groups of 7 and 8. The children can make 7 and 8 in a number of ways (3+4, 5+3 etc. using concrete materials) – ask them, challenge them!! this is a very important skill and we are all working hard to develop this.

Other areas

We all love autumn, we have been on an autumn walk and collected lots and lots of leaves. We have used the leaves to create pictures, to order smallest to largest and to sort according to shape. We especially enjoyed reading The Little Acorn which has helped us to understand the life cycle of the acorn.

Participation Friday

Our focus is  Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We made bookmarks from recycled materials and took them to local shops to give to customers to encourage them to think about how small changes can make a big difference. (pictures will appear in next weeks blog)

Next Week HIghlights- Halloween Disco and preparations for Deans Big Birthday Celebrations.

Have a great week!!

Welcome to Dean’s Den

A big welcome from Dean’s Den!! This week we have been working on improving our listening skills, using song and actions to help us.   We also enjoyed exploring a variety of stories, including The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s child by Julia Donaldson. We have enjoyed them so much that we can retell most of the story, using props to help us!!!

We look forward to developing our learning further in the coming weeks.

Signs of Autumn in P2/1

Down in Primary 2/1 we have been embracing all things autumnal. We all decided that  it was our favourite season where we can wrap up warm, drink hot chocolate, go trick or treating on Halloween and most of all look at all the wonderful colours that autumn produces.

We have spent some time outside going on a autumn walk to collect lots of natural materials so we can produce some ‘transient art’. This means art that can move around. We had lots of fun using our imagination to make pictures and then using our ICT skills to take the perfect picture with the ipad.  Here are some examples of our work.

We had lots of leaves left over so we decided to make some leaf people, we added eyes, arms and legs. They look super cute!

We spent some time investigating the leaves and looking at the patterns of their tiny veins. We painted them and printed them onto paper using autumnal colours and we also used crayons to create a leaf rubbing pictures.

At the moment our favourite story is The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. We are enjoying using our new puppet theater to retell the story using all the different voices of the characters in our own words. We love how the book rhymes too. We made a Gruffalo tuff tray too so we can act out the story with all the characters and make up our own stories too, we even added some new characters. We especially love the snake and his log pile house.

Families Connect Final Session

Today was our last Families Connect get-together and we celebrated in style!

We went to Innoflate together and had a great time bouncing around, we’re not sure who had more fun, the children or the adults!

Can you spot Sarah hiding in the ball pit?

Back at school we had a special visitor waiting for us – Gary Locke, the Hearts coach and ex-professional footballer! This was very exciting! Gary spent some time with us and then visited a few of the classes, he gave some great advice about becoming a professional footballer – his top tip was to listen to teachers and stick in at school.

Families Connect

Today at Families Connect we were discussing Number Talk. We learned some numbers in Welsh – this showed us how confusing learning numbers can be for our children. We tried out some games related to numbers – we had to sort buses into ‘teen’ and ‘ty’ garages and then we were given a busy street scene where we had to find lots of hidden numbers; similar to ‘Where’s Wally?’

When the children joined us, we enjoyed snack together and then played the games. Some of us challenged ourselves by timing how long it took us to put all the buses in the garages and find all the numbers in the scene. We were all careful to pronounce the number names clearly, as sometimes children can confuse ‘teen’ and ‘ty’ numbers.

Next week is our last week of Families Connect. We will be sad for Families Connect to end but we are really looking forward to a group trip to Innoflate to celebrate the completion of our programme!
