Weekly Update From P1A

I hope you have all had a good week and  managed to enjoy the beautiful weather we have been experiencing. Some highlights of this weeks learning.

Fairyland – Goldilocks and the Three Bears

This week we have been enjoying the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The children enjoyed making different sized porridge bowls using repeating patterns.

The children have also enjoyed using masks to retell the story.

Writing

This week we have carried out 2 pieces of work around the story. The first was a sorry letter from Golidlocks to the 3 bears. The children had to say what she was sorry for and to promise never to do it again.

Indie commented that she is “really proud” of her writing.

The second piece of writing centred around the question “What happens Next?”The children did really well explaining the next part of the story.

Nemi and Indie are very proud to be able to write a number of sentences independently.

Robbie said he really enjoyed working with Emily they “make a good team”

Numeracy – Leading the learning

A good example of Indie explaining and leading the learning during a number talks lesson.

Health and Wellbeing

We are continuing with our “changing me” topic and after sorting some life cycles the children had to identify things that are different within themselves now they are 5 or 6.

Some other comments the children wanted to share-

Robbie – “I love coming to school and especially love breakfast club”

Danni – “I enjoyed blowing bubbles in the field with Mrs Dobbie”

Liam – “I am so quick, I am the fastest runner”

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I will be back next week with some more updates.

Weekly Update From P1A

I hope you have all had a good week. We have been very busy in P1 and the children would like to share some of their learning with you.

Firstly, I just wanted to give you an update on the beans that we are growing in our “greenhouses”. It is really interesting for the children to see what usually happens under the soil.

Fairyland

Writing – Little Red Riding Hood

This week we have been reading Little Red Riding Hood and The Wolf’s Story. The Wolf’s story is a different version of Little Red Riding Hood. In this story the wolf explains that it wasn’t his fault, it was Little Red’s fault for bringing Grandma sticky toffees (ask your child to tell you more!) The children absolutely loved the story and had never thought about there being 2 sides to the story.

After much discussion we decided to vote for who we believed was telling the truth. We create a bar chart to display the results-

As you can see, most children believed that the wolf was telling the truth. The children then had to record which version they believed to be the truth and why. Some examples below-

The children then created a puppet show of their favourite version.

The children enjoyed creating their very own baskets for Grandma, using weaving to create a basket effect.

The children have also enjoyed creating imaginary stories using dragon masks from the castle-

Numeracy

Well done to the boys who challenge themselves to complete the subtraction train in record time! Also great job in creating number families to 14!

Health and Wellbeing

For the next few weeks we will be focusing on “Changing Me” . We began by revisiting lifecycles and how we change as we get older. The children had a discussion about what they would like to be when they grow up. We had lots of interesting occupations including, personal trainers, singers, painters etc.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I will be back next week with more updates.

Weekly Update From P1A

I hope you have all had a good week. We have been really busy  turning our classroom into fairyland! As promised last week I have pictures of the beans that we planted. They are coming along nicely and the children are enjoying looking after them. I will send them home next week and hopefully they will continue to grow in your garden.

The Three Little Pigs

We have really enjoyed reading The Three Little Pigs and have completed a number of activities around the story. Firstly we re-told the story .

Next we decided to carry out a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) Challenge. We wanted to know if we could build a house strong enough to withstand the big bad wolf as he huffed and puffed. Firstly, we investigated materials around the classroom to find out what we could use.

Next we gathered materials  (wooden sticks, lolly pop sticks, straws, lego and wooden bricks) and started to build. I went around with a hairdryer. To represent the huffing and puffing of the big bad wolf. Some “houses” were more successful that others!

On Wednesday we came back from lunch to find that the dragon had visited and left a letter and a gift for all the children.

The children were thrilled with the letter and castle booklets!

Writing – The Three Little Pigs

I gave the the children a picture from the story and they were asked to write what happens next. Some super examples-

Writing – The Three Billy Goats Gruff

The children also re-told the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff, using simple sequencing. Some examples below-

The children made a bridge for the Billy Goats to cross.

I hope you have enjoyed seeing some of the fantastic learning that has taken place this week. Have a lovely long weekend and I shall post more updates next week.

Weekly Update From P1A

I Hope you have all had a good week , we certainly have here in P1. We have been very busy. We now have a beautiful castle for the dragon. The children have made crowns and shields and have really enjoyed using their imagination as they play  in and around the castle. Some pictures below-

Last week we planted some beans in soil, this week we have planted some bean seeds in our own very special  see through “green houses”(some pictures below). By planting them in this way, I hope that we can see how the bean takes root and can begin to identify the different parts of a plant.

Writing –

This week we have been enjoying reading the story of the Three Little Pigs. The children have created  a narrative story about one of the little pigs. They had to describe the setting, explain what happens and how the character felt. Amazing writing by everyone!

Numeracy  and Maths

We have spent  part of the week creating simple graphs to display information. The children are becoming more confident when identifying  the most and least popular item. In the pictures below you can see that most children liked the blue bean.

During smart start the children have been using dried beans to count collections and completing a bean jigsaw challenge.

We have also been looking at 10 as a base number and have been bundling groups of 10 using sticks to support the understanding of teen numbers.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I will post more updates next week.

Weekly Update From P1A

I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend and managed to have some fun time with your family.  Although it has been a short week we have been very busy carrying out tasks from the dragon. We have finished Jack’s beanstalk and made a beautiful golden goose. Some pictures below –

Writing – Narrative

The children have really enjoyed writing “once upon a time” stories where they have been encouraged to use their imagination. They have written stories about kings, princes, wolves, hungry dragons etc. Some super examples below-

We thought it woulds be a good idea to grow our own beanstalks. So we have planted and watered them and are going to record their progress. We also looked at the life cycle of a bean. Once they start to grow the children will bring them home and you can plant them in the garden. Hopefully they will grow into large beanstalks with lots of pods!

Maths – Measure

We have done a little measuring this week using non-standard units. The children drew around their feet and cut out their foot shape and used it to estimate and then measure objects. They also used cubes, magic beans and stones. Some of thier estimates were fairly accurate!

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I will back next week with more updates.

Weekly Update From P1A

It has been a really exciting week in Primary 1. On Monday we came back from lunch to find a trail of green glitter and a letter in our library corner!

After a very exciting discussion we opened the letter and this is what it said…

All of the children agreed that we must help the dragon and the characters of Fairyland. The dragon asked us to rebuild Fairyland in our classroom, so we decided to write to Mrs Stewart and ask her if we could. Some examples below-

Thankfully she agreed. As the dragon mentioned Jack we decided to start by reading Jack and the Beanstalk. We have read 3 slightly different versions and enjoyed all of them. After reading we decided we needed to build and decorate a beanstalk with lots of leaves.

We now have lots of beautifully decorated leaves and magic beans to put on and around the beanstalk (I will hopefully be able to post a picture of completed beanstalk next week)

Writing – Narrative Genre

For writing this week we wrote a story about Jack and his adventure. The children had to write who was in the story, where it took place, what happened and how Jack felt. They all did a fantastic job!

Numeracy

This week we took our numeracy work outside. We made giant number lines and practised jumping forwards and backwards to remind us which direction to go in when we are adding and subtracting.

Health and Wellbeing

This week we had a yoga lesson with Mrs Anderson. The children enjoyed meditating, pretending to move like jungle animals and even enjoyed the relaxation at the end.

I hope you all have a lovely long weekend and I look forward to welcoming the children back on Tuesday 4th May. I will update you on our Fairyland progress next week.

Weekly Update From P1A

I hope you enjoyed the Easter holidays and managed to take advantage of the lovely weather. It was great to see all the children back  for their last term in Primary 1! Some of the learning that has taken place this week-

Writing –

This term we have started a new writing genre and shall be writing a number of recounts pieces. Bascially for us in Primary one, that means writing that retells events that have already occured. The first piece was titled “Playing in my Bedroom”. The children had to write sentences saying where they were, what they were doing, what they made and how they felt. I think they did really well and I can see a big improvement in their writing skills. Some writing examples below.

Phonics and Reading

We have been working really hard on our blends – ch, th, sh, wh and ng. The children have been creating words and reading sentences which contain the  blends.

Health and Wellbeing – Health Me

For the first part of this term we will be looking at how to keep our bodies and minds healthy. We began by idenifying something that we already do to keep us healthy. Some examples below-

Next, we drew examples of healthy food we would like to have in our lunch boxes-

Numeracy – Subtraction and numbers up to 20

We are continuing to learn how to subtract numbers and make numbers beyond 10 using 10 as a base. Some pictures below-

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I shall be back next week with more updates from P1A.

Weekly Update from P1A

Hello everyone and welcome to this weeks blog. We have had another busy learning week which has included some Easter crafts.  We have made Easter cards using finger paints. We hope you like them!

We have also made Easter baskets which have little chicks inside and a few chocolate eggs. Enjoy!

Writing –

This week the children continued to develop their information writing skills. Our topic was Easter and children had to write sentences explaining when it was, what it was and how it is celebrated. Some excellent examples below-

Some very exciting news, Aaron, Robbie and Liam have been asked by Mrs Stewart to read their information reports to the whole school during our virtual Easter Assembly. Well done boys I am so proud of you!

Literacy –

During Literacy this week the children have been completing some free writing tasks. It is great to see them challenging themselves to write 4 and 5 sentences independently!

Some more images of the children completing reading skills tasks and making sentences with our new ch sound.

Numeracy and Maths –

As well as our usual numeracy, this week we attempted to make symmetrical eggs. It was a very challenging task however, the children displayed a growth mindset and didn’t give up!

I hope you all have a wonderful Easter! Eat lots of chocolate eggs and enjoy time with your family.

Weekly Update from P1A

Welcome to our weekly update. This week we have continued to welcome signs of spring. We drew and painted blossom trees using the bottom of a plastic bottle to give the effect of  blossoms.

We also looked at the life cycle of bees and found out lots of interesting facts about their hives and the Queen Bee.

We have now finished our “Hello Spring” display. As you can see we have created lifecycles for frogs, butterflies and bees. We are very proud of it!

Writing – Information Reports

The Spring theme continued into our weekly writing. The children were asked to write a report containing information about frogs. What they look like, where they live and what they can do. We had a fantastic discussion and found out lots of interesting facts e.g. frogs are nocturnal, they can camouflage themselves and some are poisonous. Some examples below-

Numeracy

When the children come in class in the morning they now complete a daily number challenge. This challenge takes place as we are ordering lunches and completing the register. It is a super way to get motivated for the day and the children are keen to challenge themselves to complete as many questions as they can.

This week we have began looking at subtraction and are exploring the concept in an active way.

I hope you have a lovely weekend, keep safe and I will post more updates next week.

Weekly Update from P1A

Hello everyone and welcome back to our class blog. It is great to be back and hopefully things can now get back to feeling a little more normal.

Although Spring does not officially start until the 20th of March, we have been enjoying the lovely sunny weather and have began investigating how our environment changes as we welcome the new season. We wanted our classroom to reflect some of the changes going on outside and have started creating new Spring wall displays.

We read a lovely story called Cody the Cautious Caterpillar. This inspired us to investigate the life cycle of a butterfly. As you can see from the picture above we made caterpillars using finger paints and butterflies using collage materials. At the top right of the picture you can see a diagram detailing the cycle. We moved onto look at the life cycle of a frog. As you can see from the picture below, we drew frogs using a guided draw and created life cycle diagrams. Investigating Spring has definitely made us all feel positive!

Writing –

This term we are focusing on the genre of report writing. The children have been learning to write about leaves, shoes and tents so far. They have detailed what they look like, where you might find them and what there purpose is. Some examples below-

Numeracy –

Since we all came back to class we have been focusing on addition and combining different combination of numbers to 10. Some of the activities the children done to support their understanding of this concept pictured below –

I hope you all have a great weekend. Stay safe and I will post more updates next week.
