Primary 4 Class 21.01.2022

What a fantastic week we’ve had!

We learnt to use apostrophes to shorten two into one, we got a visit from Draco the Dragon who asked us to write  a story about him and we asked questions about our novels.

For IDL, we used google maps  to locate our school and where we are in relation to the map of Scotland.  We also used ICT to find information about John Logie Baird.

For Numeracy, we revised on all the multiplication strategies we have learnt and played games based on this topic.  We learnt to do doubles and trebles as well.  We create patterns using everyday objects as well.

We hope you have a nice weekend everyone!

What have P6 Been Up to this week?

Smart Starts – This week we have been playing Wordle every day. It is a game where you have to work out the unknown word. On Friday we solved the daily puzzle in just 4 tries! You might want to try : https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

This week was Patterns and Sequences focus week. We learnt about square numbers.

Bailey – I liked making patterns using shapes for my partner to continue.

In addition we also learnt more about rounding numbers.

PE

Bella – I enjoyed hockey and learnt how to dribble and pass. Now I need to get better at scoring.

Coding with Mrs Buntin

Emily – It was fun using the Bee Bots.

Bailey – I enjoyed coding and learnt how to make my own game.

Cameron – I enjoyed finishing my PowerPoint as part of our WW2 topic. It was about the blitz.

Bud!

We had a visit from Poppy Scotland who brought a van called Bud. We even got to make our own poppies and learnt a lot!

Alexis – I enjoyed learning about the death coin which was given when people passed away.

The World War One Memorial Plaque was made from Bronze and hence it was popularly known as the “Dead Man’s Penny” among front-line troops, also becoming widely known as, the “Death Penny”, “Death Plaque” or “Widow’s Penny”.

Hello and welcome to this weeks blog. We have had an extremely busy learning week. Some pictures the children wanted to share with you.

Numeracy and Maths- Patterns and Relationships

This week we have been looking at patterns. The children have been copying, continuing  and patterns using cubes, beads and colours. Some pictures below-

Writing – What Happened Next?

This week we  continued with our narrative writing genre. The children  had to use their imagination to descibe what might happen to Jack and his mum now that they have the golden goose. We had lots of great ideas including, buying a golden palace, getting Daisy the cow back, buying more farm animals etc. Some super examples below-

Learning Through Play

Part of our classroom has been turned into a doctors surgery complete with a reception and waiting area, an examination bed, PPE, bandages, plasters etc. The children absolutely love it and have had great fun bandaging each other up, listening to their heartbeats, taking x-rays etc.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend. I will be back next week with more highlights.

Primary 5’s Update

This week in Primary 5 we have been very lucky to start sessions on digital learning with the help of Mrs Buntin. We are beginning by looking at coding. This week we spoke about creating algorithms and we made some up to make BeeBot move to make a chosen digital number by going forward, left, right or backwards:

Digital Numbers On White Background Stock Vector (Royalty Free) 1404265058

We are excited to learn more next time! Here are some pictures of us this week:

In Reading we have gone back to revisit our prediction skills. We did these for our group readers this week. Here are some we made:

Sophie C – Fern is going to go back to the barn and Wilbur is going to be missing.

Sophie G – I think that Fern’s mum is going to start believing the stories that Fern has been telling and she will go to the barn and see Wilbur and Charlotte etc all talking.

Erin R – I think that when all the kids go to see the Queen, the castle is going to stink-bombed.

Ariah – I think crickets are going to wake up Wilbur. He is then going to go to Fern’s house and Charlotte is going to go and look for him, then get lost.

Jessica – I think that when Mr Stofflees is finished painting that the tiger is going to come to life.

In Spelling we practised our words by writing them in alphabetical order. This was challenging, especially when some of our words started with the same letter! We also selected some other tasks to help us practise our words.

In Writing we created a new narrative story. This week we took some inspiration from our class novel where one of the characters was briefly taken back in time to when he was born. Then Mrs Hillan showed us part of a story she had created, but this time her character went into the future! We used these stories to then create a plan first, then used this to write our own Adventure in Time stories, remembering that we needed to include a problem and resolution. Please have a look at us hard at work and read some of our stories below:

In Numeracy this week we have continued using our division skills and we have worked hard using the SHM textbooks. One group have looked at dividing by 10, 100 and 1000’s and the other has worked on dividing by 2, 4, 5 and 8.

In topic, we have put our Space topic on hold to do a Scottish Mini topic on The Celts. We have started this week by creating a thought shower together of what we know, what we would like to know and how we can find out. The Blue shows what we already know, the Orange shows what we would like to find out and the Green shows how we might find out:

P6/5 Week Ending Friday 14th January

P6/5 Week starting Monday 10th January

Monday:

Maths – All groups were looking at fractions today; one group were sorting various activities and games into degrees of difficulty. We looked at the forward plan to help us discuss the learning intentions for these activities and decided most them were covered by “to sort and compare fractions”.

Literacy – reading groups have new reading books so we all looked at the skill of prediction.

PE – we all looked at possible activities for the coming term and decided to focus on tennis, rugby and continue football.

To help us with our understanding of vertebrates and  invertebrates, and our artistic skills, we drew skeletons.

Tuesday:

Maths: continuing work on fractions in our groups, looking at denominators and numerators.

Literacy: continued work on prediction (the rest of the book). Progressed from making notes to writing this up in sentences (some in paragraphs) into jotters. We also did an extended writing piece – a narrative story of each child’s own choice.

Mrs D STEM activities in the afternoon. Fractions

Wednesday:

Maths –  Fractions, with one group focusing on simple fractions of a number, the rest on equivalent fractions. A small group were also able to work on percentages and how they relate to fractions.

Literacy – generating questions (and corresponding answers) about their group reading books, which will feed into a reading comprehension activity. We also peer assessed the narrative writing from the previous day.

In the afternoon we used our drama skills to further our understanding of “Macbeth” and what a medieval battle might have sounded like.

We also continued working on our skeletons. We extended this activity today by getting some people to label the different bones while some people  drew examples of other animal’s skeletons.

Thursday

In maths some continued their work on fractions of a whole number, while another group worked on related word problems.

In literacy some were creating questions about the text they were reading, while others had to catch up on their reading.

In the afternoon the class continued their work on “Macbeth” and practised their drawing skills by creating an image of the three witches.

Friday:

Assembly, when LH got the star award for sensibly supporting others.

Maths: how to make a loop game, and using these to practice maths including decimals and fractions.

PE: throwing and catching, relating to racket and ball skills

Primary 2

What a very busy start to the new term! We have welcomed three new pupils into Primary 2 so it has been a very exciting week!

Writing

We have moved on to our next genre in writing which is narrative. The children have worked very hard to create their story about ‘The Lost Puppy’. We are trying to remember a capital letter, finger space and full stop in all of our sentences.

PE

We are now doing basketball for PE. This week we have worked on dribbling, chest passes and have started trying to shoot into the basket, which is a challenge! The children have really enjoyed basketball and cannot wait to play a proper game.

Topic

We are doing a mini topic on Scotland. We have discussed this week what we already know about Scotland and what we would like to learn about. We also sang ‘Heid, Shooders, Knees an Taes’ as we were looking at Scots language. They found Scottish slang very funny as they think it sounds very ‘weird’. Just in case you hear any slang about the house!

I am extremely proud of how hard the children have worked this week.

Have a lovely weekend!

This Week in P3

Literacy
This week, we have been working hard practising our spelling words. We have been playing spelling games with our friends to develop our skills when sounding out words.

In writing this week, we started learning about narrative writing. We use a story mountain to help us plan our story. We had to use our imagination to create a text to entertain the reader. We were writing a story where we went through the wardrobe and we went into a different land.

Numeracy
This week, we have been focusing on missing number addition equation. This is an addition equation where we have the answer and one of the digits we are adding and the second digit is missing. We could use the count on strategy or the take away strategy.

IDL
We have been learning about Christian beliefs this week. We have learnt that Christians believe in one God and they pray to God to give thanks, to give them guidance or for forgiveness. We also were learning that Christians believe that God created the universe in 6 days and on the 7th day God had a rest. Then, we had to design a poster to display the key features if Christian beliefs.

Weekly Update From Primary One

Happy New Year to you and your family. I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and managed to stay well.

Welcome to the first blog post of 2022. The children are  happy to be back at school and have settled  in well . The children have choosen some of this weeks work they would like to share with you-

Literacy – Writing

This term we are focusing on a new writing genre and  will be exploring narrative/descriptive writing.  To get us started we received a very important letter from Jack (from Jack and the Beanstalk) telling us that the giant had followed him down the beanstalk and had escaped. A picture of the glitter trail that led to a letter in our library corner.

We decided that we would we use our imagination to think about where the giant could be hiding and how he was feeling. The children came up with super ideas e.g. behind the beanstalk, on the roof, in the forest etc. We also had some great describing words when writing about how the giant  might be feeling, such as miserable, suprised and lonely. Some examples below-

Numeracy – Time

As well as our normal numeracy we are going to learn about time. We began by looking at daily routines and the children drew things  they do in the morning, afternoon and at night. This enables the children to link daily routines and personal events to time sequences. Some pictures below-

We have also really enjoyed reading and making hungry capterpillars to help us sequence the days of the week.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I will be back next week with more updates from Primary 1.

Happy New Year from Primary 5!

In our writing this week we have started our new genre of Narrative writing. We discussed how this is where we can really let our imaginations run wild! We have to work on giving lots of details for characters, setting etc. We started off this week by looking at the example in the big book, which was all about a Great BMX Race. We discussed this piece and then thought about races or competitions that we have taken part in and this is what we wrote about. Here are some pictures of us busy writing our stories:

Some of us also shared our stories with the class:

In Numeracy we have been continuing to work on our division skills and started off by testing each other on our knowledge so far. We have also worked on our Number Talk skills, looking at the place value of numbers to work out our answers.

Next week we look forward to some more new learning!
