Primary 2 W/C 22/11/21

We have had another busy week in Primary 2!

Numeracy

We are still working hard on subtraction. The children are using different strategies to support their learning and are trying so hard.

Literacy

In writing this week, the children did a piece of persuasive work. They had to provide reasons why their choice of pet was the best. The children came up with great arguments.

Music

The Nativity songs have started! (I am sure you have heard them all at home!) The children are enjoying singing ‘Down in the Stable’. We look forward to performing the Nativity in December.

This Week in P3

In writing this week, we were persuading the reader about our favourite pet. We had to look at our feedback from last week and had to uplevel our work

As a class, we have been focusing on our questioning and summarising skills. We paused when reading to ask our friend questions about the text.

Maths

This week, we were looking at angles. We were identifying that a right angle is 90°, an acute is less than 90°, an obtuse angle is between 90° and 180° and a straight angle is 180°. We were using concrete materials to help us identify the type of angle.

IDL

In expresive arts this week, we were using charcoal to create representation  of extreme earth. We were learning to shade by using the charcoal to create different dimensions.

Weekly Update From Primary One

Some of this weeks highlights.

Persuasive Writing

This weeks persuasive piece of writing was about why exercise is good for you. The children had great ideas and the writing was amazing. Some children writing 2 sentences and all children attempting to sound out words independently. I am so proud of them all!

Numeracy

This week we have been working on addition to 10 as well as making numbers in different ways. The children are becoming more skilled at partitioning  dot patterns and enjoyed using numicon to create number families to 10. They are becoming more skilled at explaining the strategies they have used.

Charlotte making 10 by using 4,2,2,1 and 1

   Hunter making 10 using 6,2 and 2

A big thank you to everyone who helped make fantastic diormas. It is great to see the children engaging and enjoying reading. Some examples below.

They will be displayed around the school for everyone to enjoy.

Last Friday we celebrated the Scottish Book Bug Launch by dressing in our pyjamas, gathering in the hall and listening to stories. Some pictures from the    Launch-

Buddies

The buddies joined us on Thursday afternoon to create the front cover of the book they are writing together.

Have a lovely weekend and I will be back next week with a weekly update from Primary one.

Learning Highlights from P4/3

This week has been a busy and quick week.

On Monday in Green Gym we were being animal detectives. We had previously laid cat food out in trays of soil and mud. We then came back to these trays to investigate and look for any animal footprints. We were convinced that we saw deer footprints! We also played a game of Predators and Prey, we had to camouflage ourselves from the prey to avoid getting eaten! We are really enjoying green gym, it is great to be active outside whilst learning about our environment.

This week our teachers apprentice group had the great honour of presenting to Mrs Cochrane. They did a fantastic job of leading the learning and facilitating a discussion surrounding their chosen text about dinosaurs. We are getting very good at using the language of reciprocal reading and being able to apply it to our reading tasks within the classroom. Some of us were a bit nervous but we rose to the challenge and felt proud of our efforts afterwards.

In numeracy we have been looking at strategies to assist subtraction, including exchanging, place value and being able to read word problems for numbers up to 1000. We thoroughly enjoy a challenge and although we initially found this a bit of a challenge we persisted and learned from our mistakes to help us feel confident in out learning.

In writing this week we have been focusing on the planning stage for next week’s task. We have been revising all of the concepts of Persuasive writing and looking at appropriate vocabulary to up level our work. Next week we will be writing about why Santa should give us our chosen present.

We hope you enjoyed a brief snapshot of our week in Primary 4/3.

An Update from Primary 5

We have had a busy week in Primary 5 this week.

In Numeracy we have continued looking at Place Value and larger numbers in general.

We worked together on some number talks this week too. We looked at Friendly Numbers. We could see how if you worked out the answer to one question, then you could use this to easily answer a question with similar numbers involved.

In Literacy we have been practising our spelling words this week by creating some spelling rainbows and some partner work. We played Spelling Tennis this week, where we spelled out our words whilst passing the ball back and forth on each letter.

In Reading we have revisited our predicting skills this week. We used where we were in our group readers, to then make predictions of what we thought might happen next. Here are some of our predictions:

Chloe – Gran, Biff and Chip will make something to stop the builders of the motorway.

Lewis D – I thought that Superdog was going to save everyone he knew and around him.

Sophie C – I think the pig is going to be sad because he can’t make a web like the spider.

Jessica – I thought that there was going to be a thief and the dog will try to scare him.

Erin R – I predicted that dad was going to snap and that would make Jimi-Luke be alive again.

Caelan – Since the pig can’t make a web, he is going to try to get out of his pen and find lots of string to tie together.

In Writing we have continued our genre of Persuasive Writing. We wrote pieces this week about why recycling was important. Here are some of our thoughts and some of us working on our pieces:

Sophie C – I think recycling is very important for the environment.

Gracie – I think recycling makes everyone happy.

Kayleigh – I enjoyed writing about recycling so now everyone knows how to recycle.

Lewis R – Recycling helps the environment.

In topic we have been creating images of our Solar System as well as doing some research on the International Space Station. We will continue more research next week. Some of us worked with Mrs Hillan on creating a rocket for our display.

We are looking forward to more new learning next week!

This Week in P3

Literacy

This week, we have been practicing our spelling every day. We have been practicing our words in many different ways. We have been playing games with our spelling words such a roll, read and write.

In reading this week, we have been continuing to develop our skills when reading with expression. For our reading comprehension, we have been developing our reciprocal reading skills. After answering questions about our text, we have to create questions to ask to a friend and write a summary.

For Scottish book week, we had to Stop, Drop and Read. This was exciting as we were watching Newsround when the bell went off. As a class, we have been sharing our recommendation of books to read. We also loved coming into school in our jammies to get our book bags to take home.

Numeracy

This week, we started learning about addition. We have been learning that using concrete material such as 100 squares or counters can help accurately calculate the answer. We were looking at partitioning as an effective strategy to help us calculate the answer.

IDL

For our topic this week, we were learning that a tsunami is created when an earthquake or a volcano erupts under the water. This causes a gigantic wave to be created under the surface instead of on the surface from the wind. A tsunamis hits land and causes destruction.

When watching the news, we also learned there was a small earthquake in Scotland at the start of the week. We are loving how we can research current affairs related to Extreme Earth.
