This Week in Primary 5

This week in Primary 5 we have been given our new home learning sheet for the month along with our first week’s spelling words. We have been practising these in class and should continue to do so at home.

We have now been given our group reading books. We have started reading these in class and have made predictions on these already, saying what we think the book might be about and why we think this.

We have continued our Recount writing genre and this week we wrote a recount of our birthdays. Mrs Hillan went through each stage with us, sharing information on her birthday recount, and this gave us ideas for our’s. Read some of these below :

In Numeracy we did a number talk on addition, initially looking at 2 digit numbers, then we were given a 4 digit number to try. We could see that no matter how large the number was, the process was just the same! We also got an opportunity to look at some online numeracy games this week.

For our Novel Study this week, we created images of all the main characters for our display. We used what we had read to help us decide what they would look like.

We also created some questions in groups for some of the main characters in the story. We then used these to do a ‘hot-seating’ activity, where one of us pretended to be a character from the book and the rest of us took turns asking our questions. The person in the role of the character had to use their knowledge of them from the story to answer the questions as they may do. We all got a turn of being a character and asking questions.

Here are some photos of us creating our questions:

We look forward to another week of learning next week!

P4 class 3rd September 2021

What a fantastic week we had!

We learnt to many things about recount writing by working together.  Our teacher gave us text samples of each feature of the text and we had to work as group to classify them into Title, Orientation, Sequence of Events and Personal comment.

We also assessed and our own as well as our peer’s recount writing.  We are getting better at giving feedback based on our success criteria.

For Numeracy, we learnt to use partition strategy for addition.  We also identified the value of digits within a number.  We are up to the Thousands now.   For Maths, we created 2D shapes using popsicle sticks.  We named the shapes and talked about it’s properties.

Title – P6s’ Week

Orientation

kaiden – Welcome to the BLOG and the best class ever. Here is what P6 have been doing this week.

Sequence of Events

In literacy we have been learning how to write a recount. A recount is a retelling of events in the past so we have decided to write our BLOG in this way. There are four sections : Title, Orientation, Sequence of Events and Personal Comment.

In maths we have had a focus week learning about 2D and 3D shapes.

Debbie – I liked drawing an animal made of shapes. It was a cat made from circles, ovals, rectangles and squares.

Bailey – This week in Basketball I enjoyed the game where someone tries to knock the ball out of the court.

Kyle – I enjoyed playing small games. I liked it.

Jaxson – I enjoyed drawing my shoe. I was proud of it.

Emily – We had a secret compliment challenge. We were given a secret person at random. Then all week we gave them compliments. We had to guess who our secret person was at the end of the week.

Kyle – I feel great when I get compliments.

Emily – I enjoyed designing a graffiti brick.

We were able to design a graffiti brick when we were caught using positive and encouraging language.

Personal Statement

Emily – We had a great week.

Grace – I hope we have a good week next week.

p6/5 blog

At the start of the week we did we did bottle organization ect after that we did writing about Mr Topley’s years in the army he was really good at explaining it and it was really exiting. Then we started tiling for math with 3 dimensional shapes it is really fun to tile we also got to colour them in we were not able to make design in our tiles but we could make patterns with the tiles with the colours. We did a sway for parents about how our class thinks.

We started literacy on the loch ness monster that we were then going to put it in our jotters. Later in the week we also got a chance to change our library books and a couple of people chose Anne Frank books plenty of people chose non fiction the rest chose fiction books. We did 3 dimensional shapes the class did math sheets this carried on till after break.

Weekly Update From P1

We have finished our P1 class charter. We read Elmer stories to help us think about our school values and how we can demonstrate them to each other.

Literacy

This week we have started learning sounds. The first sound we have focused on is “m”. The children have been learning to recognise it, say it, write/make it and identify if the m sound is at the beginning or end of a word. Well done to everyone one for trying really hard!

Numeracy

The children are continuing to learn all about numbers and this week they have been learning about numbers 2,3 and 4. They have been working hard on number formation, creating groups and explaining different ways to make numbers.

Maths – Shape

For the next 2 weeks the whole school are focusing on shape. In Primary one  we have been exploring the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. We began with a shape sort (how many sides, how many corners? etc.) The buddies very kindly helped the Primary ones make shape monsters using 2D shapes. Some very impressive pictures below-

The children have also been making shape patterns in the playground.

I hope you have enjoyed this weeks blog. I will be back next week with an update. Have a lovely weekend.

A busy week in P2/1

We have had such a busy week in P2/1!

Spelling

This week, the P1s have been learning all about the ‘m’ sound. We have had lots of practise forming the letter m and identifying words that we hear the letter in.

The P2s have been consolidating their knowledge of the ‘oa’ and ‘ai’ sounds. They were challenged to think of different words containing these sounds, and to try and use them in a sentence.

Writing

We have continued to focus on the genre of Recount. This week, we were challenged to recount our bedroom! We had to draw and label our bedroom, before trying to write some sentences about what we like to do in it.

Numeracy

Primary 1 have learned two numbers this week! We have learned all about the numbers 3 and 4. We have been focusing on what the numbers mean, how they can be made and how to form the numbers correctly.

Primary 2 have been looking at forward and backward number sequences to 100. We have been playing some fun games to help us learn, including snakes and ladders!

Maths

As a whole school this week, we have focused on the topic of shape. The class were outside with Mrs Dobbie trying to find 2D shapes in the local environment. On Thursday, we had the chance to work with our buddies to create our very own monsters using 2D shapes!

P.E.

In P.E. this term, we are focusing on spatial awareness. We had to move around the hall in different ways and using different pieces of equipment such as bean bags.

Shape Week In Primary 4/3

This week we have been focussing a large part of our learning on 2D and 3D shape.

We have enjoyed playing guess the shape game, where we used our knowledge on properties of 2D shape to give clues to our friends to help them guess the name correctly.

We have been outside in the glorious sunshine collecting a range of natural materials to make shape pictures and then build a fact file to display our learning about shape properties.

We were set  STEM challenge to build a 3D shape using only cocktail sticks and gummy sweets. Here are some of our finished models.

Finally, we we learning about the different nets that make up a 3D shape. We chose which shape we would like to make and got to working cutting and sticking to create our final 3D models. This helped us think about the different shapes of faces making up a 2D shape.

We hope you enjoyed reading the highlights of our shape focus week.

Highlights from Primary 5

This week we have continued working hard in Primary 5. We have finished off assessments in  Reading and  Numeracy and Maths.

In Reading we have continued our Novel Study. We have discussed and noted down any favourite parts from the story so far. We found out that Zoe’s Dad worked in an ice cream factory and have created posters to advertise all the different flavours of ice cream.

We continued with our Recount writing genre this week too. This week we imagined we had been on a trip to the moon and retold the events of this. We went through an example with Mrs Hillan, and then created our own recounts.

For Art this week we created some self portraits. We looked at how we can draw all of the features on the face accurately. These are some of our drawings in progress:

For PE just now we are working on Basketball skills. We have been learning the chest pass, bounce pass, single hand dribbling and double hand dribbling. We have also began working on our shooting skills. Here are some photos of us in action:
