Weekly Update From Primary One

Some highlights below from our busy learning week.

Literacy – Writing

This week as part of our recount genre the children drew detailed pictures and completed the sentence “At the shops I ……………..” We had lots of super ideas such as buying toys, clothes, notepads, food etc. Some examples below-

Phonics – s sound

Our sound of the week is s. It is a blue sound because when making the sound you feel it at the tip of your tongue . The children re-created the sound by writing, sorting and painting. They have also used the sound to play bingo and a word matching game . Some great pictures below.

Numeracy- Number 5

We have had a big focus on number 5 this week. The children used 5 frames to demonstrate different ways of making 5.

Maths – Shape

We have also had a big 3D shape sort. The children worked together in groups to sorts all the 3D shapes that they could find in the classroom. They had great fun learning about the shapes and making models.

Play in Primary One

The children firstly turned our construction area into a Mcdonalds and then into a building site! Some super imaginative ideas.

Have a lovely long weekend.

P4/3 Weekly Highlights

It has been yet another busy week in Primary 4/3.

This week in numeracy we have been focusing on fractions, decimals and percentages.

We have been investigating what a fraction is, how it looks and how we can represent a fraction in different ways. Together with Mrs Stevenson we made up a fraction cheat sheet to help us recall some key vocabulary associated with our learning.

We have been looking at each of our names and what fraction of our name is a vowel or a consonant.

We then completed an activity called Fraction Street, here we not only had to use our knowledge of fractions but also our listening skills. Mrs Stevenson called out an instruction, for example – 1/8 of the houses have a red door or 1/2 of the houses have a car parked outside, then we had to colour the correct number.

We also created our own Fraction Sundaes. Here we created a sundae with lots of different flavours, we then had to identify what fraction of each flavour made up our sundaes. Some of us were super greedy!

We didn’t complete nearly as much as we would have liked to this week so we will continue our learning of fractions into next week too.

In writing we are still working on the genre ‘Recount‘, we are all becoming such experts at what this genre of text requires. This week we wrote a recount of a gymnastics lesson from the previous day. We are very good at using a wide variety of time connectives to help sequence all the different events within our pieces of writing.

This week we have also begun to focus on our Reciprocal Reading skills and have been examining what skills are involved in our current skill focus – prediction. We made a ‘four door’ model of all the skills we will be examining. Prediction, questioning, clarifying and summarising.

Behind each door we can write our answers for the text we are focusing on. When predicting, we have been talking about the most important point, which is justifying our answers using the clues such as  –

The Title,

The illustrations,

The blurb,

The Genre of book,

The audience.

We hope you have enjoyed a little taster of our learning this week. We are looking forward to a well earned rest on Monday and Tuesday next week!

This week in Primary 5

We have been busy this week in Primary 5! This has been our Fractions, Decimals and Percentages focus week in Numeracy and Maths. We completed some work using Fractions. We looked at what a fraction is, how it looks and how we present it – 1/2/, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/6, 1/7, 1/8 etc.

Pupil thoughts:

I think Fractions is a bit hard – Kayleigh

Fractions are very easy and they are fun to learn – Chloe

If you want to half something, you put a line through the middle and if you want to quarter something you put a line through the middle one way and then through the other way. – Lewis R

When you are showing fraction you put a number on the top and one on the bottom with a line in between – Lewis D

Let’s say I had 6 on the bottom and 2 on the top, if I had a shape with 6 parts, I would colour in 2 of them – Erin R

We can use fractions when eating pizza, chocolate and cake – Sophie G

We then went on to look at mixed numbers and fractions. This is where we have a number like 2 4/5 and we then convert it into an improper fraction.

We will look at Decimals and Percentages and how these also link with fractions next week. We will use youtube clips to help with our understanding. We will focus on how we can find simple decimal fractions and working out 50%, 25% and 10% of something.

In Writing this week we continued looking at Recount. Mrs Hillan had an example for us to look at – it was a recount about a trip to a museum. We then picked somewhere we visited and gave a recount of this.

PUPIL RECOUNT IDEAS:

Mine was about going to my Nana’s – Ryley

Mine was about when I went to Arran on holiday – Sophie C

I wrote about Alton Towers – Ariah

I done one on when I went to Erin R’s birthday party – Sophie G

I done one about when I went to Eliburn Park – Matthew

Mine was about going to Burntisland – Caelan

I did one about me going to the beach – Chloe

In Reading we began our focus on Prediction for our Reciprocal Reading Skills. We are very good at making predictions in P5 and we actually make these every day, not only in our reading lessons! This week we were given two images which we then discussed and made several predictions about. Here are the pictures and some of our predictions:

PREDICTIONS:

Caelan – I think the monster is going to crush the kitten because it has it’s foot up.

Olivia – I think it is a goblin because he is green.

Lewis D – The monster is going to wake up the kitten with his foot then follow it home so he can eat all the other kittens, because he looks like he is hungry.

Sophie C – I think he is going to step on the cat, pick it up and then eat it. I think this because he had one foot raised and he looked mad, and when I get mad I’m hungry!

Jessica – I think that the creature is going to keep the cat and take it home. I think this because it looked like the creature was going to grab the kitten.

PREDICTIONS:

Erin P – I think if the rabbit goes through the tunnel then it will go into a big field.

Ariah – I think the rabbit is going to go through the hole and see its house.

Chloe – I think if the rabbit goes through the tunnel then it is going to lead to a different world.

Ciaran – I thought that the source of light was fire.

Lewis D – I think through the tunnel there will be fire and evil people.

Caelan – I think if the rabbit goes through the tunnel, it will go to the stairs of heaven.

Next week is a short week as we are on holiday on Monday and Tuesday!

p6/5 blog

this week we started with learning the areas of a compass and left and right, we didn’t all know them and that’s why we did it. After break Mr Topley came in and told us about his years in the army while he was telling us about the army we took notes and after we wrote the notes and then wrote the notes into paragraphs and some of us got the chance to go onto word and write it down. After that we finished the day off with P.E. and we climbed up ladders and done monkey bars.

On Tuesday we started talking about our topic myths and legends that carried on after break we done a summary on our books that we have read already and wrote it into our literacy jotter. Some of us fixed the library by moving the bookshelves and sorting the books into fiction and non-fiction. after that we done a summery on our books which we took notes and turned it into paragraph’s we had also did math on number lines.

On Wednesday we had Mrs Dobbie. We got dirty and it was extremely messy and we carried on after break for a little bit. We then we had continued our summary’s. After lunch we got our free writing jotters after we had a look at our math wall and looking where to put our displays. We  continued with our summary and reading them out. We then put up some stuff on the walls in the classroom.

On Thursday we started with logging into our glow some people were not able to log in so

P4 class

What a productive week it has been.

For literacy, we wrote a recount on Flying a Kite with Ms Taylor, we learnt to use past tense form of the verb by adding “ed”  We uplevelled our sentence writing skills by adding adjectives using our describing bubble.

For Numeracy, we have been revising on writing numbers in words and digits form.  We have also been learning to use partitioning strategy for addition.  For Maths, we explore the properties of 3D shapes and classified them according to their properties.

For HWB, we learn about the roles of people in our community as well as our on roles as children.  For PE we have been working on our hand eye coordination and concentration skills as we performed catching and serving the bean bags on our rackets.

For IDL, we have learnt about how the Romans came to Britain, where the came from and who Julius Caesar was.

The Week in P3

Literacy

In reading this week, we were using our skimming and scanning skills when answering questions about a passage. We had to pick out the key word in the question and then we would skim read for that word in the text.

In writing this week, we continued to develop our recount reading skills. We had to read our feedback from last week and try and up-level our writing. This week, we were writing a recount of our experiment about absorbance.

Maths and Numeracy

In numeracy this week, we were learning about less than, equal to and greater than. To help remember the correct symbols, we had to think of a crocodile and the crocodile always eats the largest number.

In maths, we were learning about 2d and 3d shapes. We also had a STEM shape challenge. Working with a partner, we hard to create shapes using cocktail sticks and Playdoh.

IDL

In science, we were learning about absorbance. When a material is absorbent, it soaks up liquid. We were given 4 materials and we had to put the same volume of water in each. Before the experiment, we had to write a hypothesis, predicting the material that would absorb the largest amount of water. Working in groups, we had to collaborate and record what was happening during our experiment.

P6 Weekly Post

Orientation

This week we have been completing various activities.

Sequence of Events

This week in literacy we have been practising our spelling using various strategies. We have continued to read our class novel and learnt how to predict before, during and after reading.

Emily – I was proud of the detail I put into my writing.

This week we wrote a recount of a special event.

In numeracy we all feel much more confident about using decimals.

During PE we were fantastic at basketball.

Joel – We had ‘Green Gym’. We built obstacles outside for other people in class. We practised the skills of teamwork and communication. In ours we had to collect balls during the course.

In health we started our new Jigsaw unit, ‘Being Me in My World.’ We discussed our achievements and goals for the year.

Personal Statement

We hope we have a fun week next week!

Weekly Update From Primary One

A few highlights from our very busy week.

Literacy

This week we have been focusing on the c sound. The children have been learning to recognise the sound, as well as read and write it. We have been playing c bingo and sorting pictures according to their initial sound. Some pictures below-

We have also continued our recount writing genre. This week the children had to recall one thing that they like to do at school. They came up with lots of suggestions including painting, drawing, writing sounds, playing in the home corner etc. Below some pictures of their writing and detailed pictures-

Numeracy and Maths

We are continuing to develop number sense and the children have enjoyed taking part in lots of different number games. They have also been exploring the properties of 2D shapes. The buddies supported the children in the making of shape rockets with their names on them.

In primary one, we also understand that play is very important to a child’s development. Play encourages and develops language skills, emotions, creativity and social skills. The children have had great fun this week turning our home corner into an Italian restaurant with real pasta and sauces. Some great pictures of them sharing, turn-taking and role-playing.

I hope you enjoyed this weeks blog. Have lovely weekend everyone!

Primary 4/3 Learning Highlights

It’s been another busy week in Primary 4/3.

This week we got our new family home learning sheets and spelling lists home. We are excited to practise these at home with our loved ones.

This week in Health and Wellbeing we have been learning what it means to be part of a team. Our value focus for this week has been Included, we all know that being part of a team means we feel included. In pairs we came up with words to go alongside the feelings of being ‘Included‘ and ‘Excluded‘.

We were set a tricky challenge of working together as a class team to pass a ball around the circle without using our hands or feet. We really had to work together for this, we had a lot of laughs as we came up with some imaginative ways to pass the ball. Lexie used her head, Charlie used his elbows and Vratko used his ears! We made up word diamonds to choose the most important vocabulary to go with being part of a team and how it makes us feel.

We also started our topic this week, The Victorians.

We are excited to start learning about all of the gruesome things they did in the past! We started off by developing some research questions to shape our learning over the next few weeks.

Here are some of the questions we came up with.

What kind of clothes did they wear?

What did their toilets look like?

Did they have cars?

What did their houses look like?

Who helped sick people?

How did they celebrate holidays like Halloween and Christmas?

What was school like?

What inventions did they come up with?

We can’t wait to get started and share all our discoveries with you.

We hope you have enjoyed a little snap shot of our learning this week.
