P5’s Weekly Update

Numeracy

This week we practised learning our x8 tables using various strategies including active dance using this link:  https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/supermovers/ks2-maths-the-8-times-table-with-filbert-fox/z4mrhbk .

We continued to learn about fractions and this week focused on comparing and ordering fractions. The class is taking part in a fractions competition using Sumdog and some of us have even been practising at home!

Next week we are going to learn about converting decimals to fractions.

Literacy

We continued our novels in group reading and in order to show understanding of what we had read we illustrated a key event and explained why what we had drawn was important.

During our discussions about adventure stories we read through an extract and discussed why the vocabulary used was effective.

Outdoor Learning

This week we wrote nature poems on the playground.

Topic

As part of our topic on dinosaurs we continued to organise our notes into a presentation. Kiera and Sophie P gave an informative and lively talk to the class. Lily-Elen’s group also  spoke confidently in front of the whole class. We gave them peer assessment using two stars and a wish. Well done!

Science

Our topic is Earth’s Materials. This week we learnt how soil is made. Kyle acted out the story of Roger the Rock becoming Simon the Soil in front of the whole class. He was brilliant!

This Week in P3/2

Literacy

We were learning to improve our vocabulary during Word Boost. We were introduced to 6 boost words and their meaning. When we hear a boost word, we have to put our finger on our nose and explain the meaning of the word. We also played the miming game, this is where one person has to mime out the boost word and the class have identify what the boost word is.

We were also developing our skimming and scanning skills during our reading comprehension. This is where we have to identify the key words within the question and skim read the text to find the answer.

For writing this week, we started learning about narrative writing. We were introduced to the structure we have to use for this genre and we created a narrative piece in small groups. Afterwards, we peer assessed each groups work and identified the areas of success and areas that they could improve on.

Maths

This week, we continued to develop our division skills. We were using our jotters to solve equations from the textbook. During number talks, we looked at division word problems. This is challenging as you have to initially work out what the question is asking you to do. We then discussed the different strategies we could use to calculate the answer.

IDL

For art this week, we were creating various landscapes. We were using pencils and we had to use different techniques to create different textures.

P4/3 Update

P4/3 have enjoyed another successful week of learning and Mrs Morrison is proud of her class. We were lucky to have Mrs Stewart visit our class this week, where we demonstrated our knowledge of explanation writing. We explained the purpose of the writing and presented our information in paragraphs. Great job, P4/3!

Numeracy

We began our new topic of division and learned that dividing means to share groups equally. Some children used concrete materials to demonstrate their understanding, whilst others began to work out division problems. We also looked at the connection between division and multiplication. Please practise dividing by 2,5 and 10. Homework sheets will be sent home on Monday.

Literacy- Class Talks

Presenting information in front of others can be a nerve-wracking experience and as a class we discussed how some people are more confident than others at delivering this skill. However, we are all willing to give this a go and support and encourage each other. Well done to Isla and Ethan who presented their talks and answered questions from their friends. I look forward to listening to other children next week.

Have a lovely weekend and I will check in with you again next Friday.

Weekly Update From P1A

I hope you have all had a good week. We have been very busy in P1 and the children would like to share some of their learning with you.

Firstly, I just wanted to give you an update on the beans that we are growing in our “greenhouses”. It is really interesting for the children to see what usually happens under the soil.

Fairyland

Writing – Little Red Riding Hood

This week we have been reading Little Red Riding Hood and The Wolf’s Story. The Wolf’s story is a different version of Little Red Riding Hood. In this story the wolf explains that it wasn’t his fault, it was Little Red’s fault for bringing Grandma sticky toffees (ask your child to tell you more!) The children absolutely loved the story and had never thought about there being 2 sides to the story.

After much discussion we decided to vote for who we believed was telling the truth. We create a bar chart to display the results-

As you can see, most children believed that the wolf was telling the truth. The children then had to record which version they believed to be the truth and why. Some examples below-

The children then created a puppet show of their favourite version.

The children enjoyed creating their very own baskets for Grandma, using weaving to create a basket effect.

The children have also enjoyed creating imaginary stories using dragon masks from the castle-

Numeracy

Well done to the boys who challenge themselves to complete the subtraction train in record time! Also great job in creating number families to 14!

Health and Wellbeing

For the next few weeks we will be focusing on “Changing Me” . We began by revisiting lifecycles and how we change as we get older. The children had a discussion about what they would like to be when they grow up. We had lots of interesting occupations including, personal trainers, singers, painters etc.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I will be back next week with more updates.

Primary 1B Learning Highlights

It has been another short but busy week in Primary 1B.

We have taken our learning outside this week on a few occasions even though the weather has not been kind to us. We have been focusing on using the correct symbols in the correct place for addition and subtraction stories. We have been using loose parts to develop our own number stories, telling the story and then recording the calculations. We have been so imaginative and it has been great fun. We have had tanks being attacked, 3 little pigs houses blown down by the wolf, scary rabbits being chased and funny faces all with a story to tell!

When it got a bit wet we took shelter with our work!

We have been working on improving our drawing and listening skills. We have come a long way with both of these skills. One of our favourite little activities as a treat is to complete a guided draw. This week we wanted to draw a dragon. We are planning to name our dragons and write a story about some of his adventures next week. So watch this space…. Here are some of our wonderful drawings. We are all so proud of our work.

We hope you enjoyed this short blog post featuring only some of our learning highlights this week.

Mrs Stevenson and Primary 1B

P5/6 Blog

This week we have done…

Maths

On math we have been looking on this online app called trip adviser. On trip adviser we have being booking our teacher a holiday and adding up how much it would be. And then we look up hotels see how much that is then get a flight and work out how much it cost.

Literacy

On literacy we have been doing Free writing were we can right what ever we want. We have also been getting  spelling words that we can practice and we wrote a story with they words.

P.E

In P.E we have been doing football and gymnastics. In football we pick teams and then we play. In gymnastics we get mats out and then do what we want like handstands and cartwheels and more.

Learning in Primary 4

This week we made predictions about what we thought would happen next in the story of The Witches. Here are some of our great ideas:

Lewis – I think that the boy’s gran is going to put him in the knitting and put him down to the witch’s balcony.

Summer – I think that the Grand High Witch will go to her room and not see the boy/mouse and he will grab a bottle of the mouse maker, take it back and they will creep into the kitchen and put it in the witches’ food, but the Grand High Witch won’t eat it.

Shay – I think that Grandma will lower the mouse down to the balcony and he will grab the Mouse Maker, but the Grand High Witch will see him and try to grab the knitting as he goes back up!

Gracie – I think Grandma is going to go to the Grand High Witch’s room and get the bottle and give it to the Grand High Witch as a drink, she will drink it and turn into a mouse.

Sophie C – I think the boy is going to go into the sock and be lowered down to the balcony and steal all of the Delayed Action Mouse Makers and bring them up to Grandma’s room!

When we discussed how the skill of making predictions can help us in the future we came up with a number of good reasons, from being able to predict when you may achieve your dreams and goals, to making predictions if you were a scientist!
In Numeracy we did a number talk where we added two 2 digit numbers together. We had a good discussion around this and came up with different ways of getting the same answers. It was also a good way for us to recognise our mistakes and learn from them.
We have also continued working on our skills in multiplying a 2 digit number by a single digit. We worked hard on this and challenged ourselves with some trickier sums. Some of us need to keep practising our tables and some of us must remember to add on any numbers we have carried over.
