A Busy Week in P4/3

It has been another busy week in P4/3, as we continue to develop our literacy and numeracy skills as well as beginning to work on Christmas crafts!! Look out for some creative art work heading your way in the next couple of weeks.

Numeracy

We have been working hard to develop our mental maths skills through number talks. All of the children have the opportunity to share their strategies with one another and discover the best method that works from them.

Health and Well- Being

We made the most of the cold, but dry weather (before the snow arrived!) to participate in physical activity. We have discussed the importance of keeping active and the benefits to our physical and mental well- being. Next week, we will design posters to demonstrate our knowledge and some will be on show on a school Health and Well- Being wall display.

Literacy

Next week all children will complete an end of term spelling assessment. If possible, please practise the words (sent home yesterday and today) with your child.

Have a lovely weekend, stay warm and cosy and I will check in with you next Friday.

Some children thought children should help at home, such as Bailey, and some children thought they shouldn’t, such as Anna.Ā  Ā Each of them came up with a list of arguments which were written on the board by Miss Taylor.

This scaffolding then helped us set out our own piece of writing.

Alexis – I am getting better at using full stops.

Numeracy

We continued to practise subtraction strategies this week and we continue to gain in confidence.

Anna – I am better at subtraction!

Music

This week we continued to practise our drumming skills and keeping in time to the beat using objects like pencils to make a sound.

Miss Stanway – I was devastated!

Weekly Update From P1A

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in P1A! The children are so excited.

Ā  Ā

Digital Learning

This week the children were given the opportunity to take part in the creation of a festive Stop Frame Animation. It is animation that is captured one frame at time, with physical objects (in this case Mary, Joseph etc.) that are moved between frames. When you play back the sequence of images rapidly, it creates the illusion of movement.Ā  Each class is contributing to the retelling of the Christmas story (when complied it will be available for you to view), Some pictures of the children demonstrating their skills.

The children are also learning a Christmas poem “Peppermint Sticks” which will be recorded and available to view during the last week of term. We have also began making Christmas decorations (a sneak peak below!)

Literacy – Writing

We have started our Christmas writing and this week they were asked to write “what they like about Christmas”. As you would expect all enjoyed getting presents, some said they liked putting up decorations and all wanted to play in the snow (at least one wish has been granted!). Some examples below

Our sounds this week have been “d” and “u”. We now have all the vowel sounds and the children have been working hard to blend the sound to make words and write short sentences. We have also been working extremely hard on reading and writing common words. Any help you could give them would really support the development of their reading and writing skills.

We are continuing to focus daily on teen numbers however, it important to consolidate numbers and number bonds within 10 so I created a fun challenge for them.Ā  I split them into 3 teams andĀ  gave them mats with dot patterns and cups with the answer on top. They had to quickly count and place the correct cup on top of the dot pattern. This went well so I changed it slightly. The children were then given mats with addition sums on it and cups with answers on top. They found this challenging but great fun. They can be very competitive!

Health and Wellbeing

This week we looked at friendship. How to make new friends and something they could offer a new friend. The children came up with a number of suggestions –

Robbie – “I would ask them to join a game”

Katie – “treat them nicely and if they got hurt I would help them”

Emily – “play games with them”

They made some lovely friendship tokens.

Ā  Ā

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I will be back next week with more news from P1A.

Primary 1B Learning Highlights

Health and Wellbeing

This week in health and wellbeing we have moved slightly away from our focus on bullying onto the qualities that make a good friend. We discussed all of the friends we have and why we are friends with them. We shared what quality made us a good friend. Here are some of our examples.

Leighton – I cheer my friends up if they are sad.

Kellan – I like to do kind things for my friends.

Lucy – I always play nicely with my friends.

Reuben – I like to draw pictures for my friends

Finlay – I like to include all my friends in the things I do.

We designed and made friendship tokens which showed us being a good friend. Jack and Finlay even began writing some kind notes for their friends, well done boys on showing kindness – I think we all agree that is the most important quality in a friend!

We watched the story ‘Frog and Toad are friends’. We loved seeing all the different ways that Frog and Toad helped and cared for each other. They were such great friends.

Literacy

This week in our writing session we thought we would get into the Christmas spirit and share why we like Christmas. There were lots of fantastic reasons given by everyone . I think we all agreed that Reuben’s idea was the most heart warming. He shared that he loved Christmas so much because he got to have a huge family dinner with everyone.Ā  We continue to focus on our core targets, and we have having a BIG push on trying to remember finger spaces in our work.Ā  Here are some of our fantastic end results.

This week our new common words are ‘he’ and ‘my‘. We are working hard reading and writing all of these words everyday. Keep practising at home everybody!

The new sounds focus for this week are d and u. Now we know all of the vowel sounds we are able to build lots of new words, this will be a big focus for us right up to Christmas. We have been building words using the magnetic letters, paddle boards and we have been playing lots of new games to help us develop these skills.

Maths

We have been continuing to focus on 2D shapes and started to get to grips with the names of some familiar 3D shapes.

Christmas Preparations

This week saw us start our Christmas preparations with the beginning of advent. Our Classroom Christmas trees are up and Frosty the snowman is on our classroom door to welcome the children in the morning.

We have started to learn a special Christmas Poem for a very special project. Here is copy for you to help you child to practise at home (you will also find a paper copy in the red home work folders)

Xmas poem

On Monday, Mrs Buntin demonstrated how to use a piece of exciting new technology called Stop Frame Animation. We all got a turn to have a go at developing our class scene for the whole school nativity. It was great fun and the end result will be amazing, we are so exited to see it!

We have also decorated our own special Christmas Bauble with Christmas design. Miss Borsby’s dad has very kindly offered to engrave children’s names onto each decoration. We can’t wait to see what they look like!

Have a fantastic weekend everybody. Stay cosy!

Another little reminder for children not to bring in toys from home at the moment due to all the current restrictions in place to keep everyone safe.

Many Thanks!

Mrs Stevenson and Primary 1B

Primary 4’s Week

In Numeracy we continue to work on Subtraction. We all had the opportunity of being ā€œthe teacherā€ and spoke through a ā€˜borrowingā€™ sum with the rest of the class. Here are some photos of us doing this:

In writing this week we have completed one more Persuasive Writing and created a one-sided argument about why a Movie Day is a good idea. We enjoyed doing this and thinking about how a movie can help us learn new vocabulary etc as well as being relaxing and a lovely treat.

“It’s the perfect way to get ready for the Christmas holidays” – Rihanna

“Having a movie day helps us learn hard words” – Hadiyaah

“It gives us a treat for all our hard work” – Joe

“A movie day gives us the chance to learn something new” – Gracie

In Reading this week we have continued reading in our groups as well as listening to and discussing our class novel which is The Christmasaurus. We are excited to see what happens next. We will continue to use this text to help us in our Word Wizard roles.

We have been busy learning our Christmas poem this week. As a class we split up the poem a line at a time in small groups. This has worked really well! We are looking forward to filming this next.
