This Week in P3/2

Literacy

During writing this week, we were focusing on varying our sentence length when writing a Viking dairy entry. We had to include connecting words, adjectives and facts we have learned about the Vikings.

During reading, we were sounding out unfamiliar words and then answering reading comprehension questions about our text.

“We were answering questions about our reading books.”

We use the look, say, cover, write strategy to help us sound out words containing our spelling pattern. In groups, we also played a tricky word flash card game.

Maths

This week, we learned more about addition. We were learning to use column sums to help us add bigger numbers. It is very important we remember our knowledge from place value when using this method.

“We used Number Talks to discuss the different strategies we can use when adding.”

“This week, we were learning to add using column sums.”

IDL

This week, we were learning about the Lewis Chessmen. These were found on the Lewis Island in 1831. There were 93 gaming pieces in total. Each piece is different and you can see these today at National Museum of Scotland.

“The Lewis Chessmen are the game pieces that the Vikings use to play chess.”

“The game pieces were carved from walrus ivory and whales’ teeth.”

Update from P2

Have a read to see what we have been up to this week!

Christmas Story

Mr Welsh read us one of our favourite stories yesterday! We showed super listening skills and were paying close attention to see if we could hear our boost words!

Writing

During writing this week we wrote letters to Santa persuading him that we have been good this year. Some of our arguments include hoovering the rug, being kind and helping to do the dishes!

Christmas Lunch

We had such a delicious Christmas lunch on Wednesday! After our lunch, we wrote letters to the lunch ladies to thank them for our wonderful food. We tried super hard to use adjectives to describe our lunch.

STEM Challenge

On Tuesday, we began learning about the Christmas story. We learned that Baby Jesus was born in a stable. We had to demonstrate our collaboration, communication and leadership skills whilst working with the people next to us to build our very own stables! We had lots of materials to choose from but had to think hard about which materials should be used where. We discovered that the kitchen roll tubes were the best material to make the sides of the stable!

Salt Dough Hands

On Thursday, we each had a batch of salt dough and we had to print our hands into the dough. Once the dough has had a chance to dry over the weekend, we will paint them next week and bring them home!

Christmas Jumper Day

Look how great we all look in our Christmas jumpers!

Today we all said goodbye and good luck to Miss Hennessy as she is leaving to work in a new school. We are all very sad to see her go but wish her the best of luck and hope to see her again very soon.

Lights, Camera, Action in P4/3!!

This week, P4/3 learned about stop frame animation during their time with Mrs Buntin. All of the children made contributions to re-telling the Christmas story using the technique of stop frame. A big well done to Ashley and Nathaniel who were able to describe and demonstrate the process to Mrs Morrison!! Look out next week (via e-mail) for the finished piece of work, well done P4/3!

Next week, we will enjoy our last week of term before the Christmas holidays. A big well done to all of the children for dealing  so well with the changes that have had to be implemented due to COVID-19. Mrs Morrison is proud of you all!

Special events next week:

Tuesday 15th December- movie afternoon and snacks!

Wednesday 16th December- P4/3 record a Christmas poem. Children to wear Christmas jumpers or something sparkly!!

Enjoy your weekend and I will check in with you all next week.

P5 Act Up!

Drama

This week we listened to the story of the birth of Jesus Christ and then in small groups acted out the story.

We used props to represent the baby Jesus and practised using our voice, facial expression and body language to represent how the different characters were feeling.

Can you guess who was the sheep in this scene, who was the angel and who was the proud father?

Going Digital

As well as acting out the Christmas story we completed a scene of the Nativity using stop frame animation. We did this with Mrs Buntin.

Alexis – I enjoyed this.

Colin – We learnt how to move the figures a little bit each time.

Jaxson – Then we took 50 million photographs.

Anna – Then you put the photographs together to make a video and narrators record a message over it.

Christmas Lunch

One highlight of the week this week was the Christmas lunch.

Bella- My favourite part of lunch was macaroni cheese and ice-cream!

Jaxson – It was nice to see Joy.

Sophie S – I liked the Christmas music at lunch.

Numeracy

This week we practised formal methods of subtraction using columns.

Lily-Elen – I am more confident at subtraction.

Health

This week we kept running for 5 minutes during P.E.

Piotr – I enjoyed the 5 minute run!

Jaxson – I was proud of everyone for running for 5 minutes.

Hope – I enjoyed football and am more confident at tackling.

Art / Music

Bailey – I enjoyed looking closely at paintings.

This was part of our work with ‘Limelight Music.’ We then went on to listen to a piece of music and draw a picture depending on how we felt about the music. Everyone interpreted the music in a different way.

Topic – Europe

Cameron – I enjoyed playing the online games.

Sara – I didn’t know Russia was so big.

Anna – I learnt that in Lithuania they make beads out of tree sap when it is hard.
