Primary 1B Learning Highlights

Health and Wellbeing

This week in health and wellbeing we have been focusing on the word bullying, what it means, what it looks like and what we should do if we ever encounter it ourselves. We discussed that bullying is something which, happens over and over again, is deliberate and can happen when more than one person is doing the bullying. We decided that we would definitely not tolerate any bullies in Primary One and we made up slogans to prevent this from happening. Our class slogan is ‘No Bullies Here’.

We have also continued to focus on recognising our emotions and how we deal with different emotions. We have been drawing portraits of ourselves and how we look when we are feeling a certain way. We discussed strategies to help us and shared ideas of different things we can do when we feel sad or scared. We had some wonderful suggestions, such as, find a friend to talk to or play some music.

Literacy

In literacy this week we have been working hard using the magnetic boards to blend and segment words like, cat, fat, mat. We have learned about word rhyming families and how we can use them to help us to spell these new words.  Our new sounds this week have been e and f. On Thursday we made some fantastic e ‘Elmos’ to decorate our class and to help us recall the shape of the letter as it can be a tricky one to get right!

As we continue to work on developing our persuasive writing skills this week we were giving our opinion on whether we like pets. We wrote 2 sentences,  I like pets. Pets are… and we had to fill in the last part of the sentence with our opinion.

Here are some of our opinions.

Finlay – I like pets. Pets are friendly and are cute.

Jake – I like pets. Pets are cute and cuddly.

Arianna – I like pets. Pets are nice.

Jack – I like pets. Pets are cute.

We continue to enjoy reading our word boost stories. This week’s words are from Katie Morag and the Two Grandmothers. These words have definitely been the trickiest so far but we have made a great attempt at remembering their definitions and trying to use them everyday when we are talking. These are the words we have focused on.

Numeracy

We have been exploring different ways to represent teen numbers this week. We have used Numicon, ten frames and made cube towers. We continue to develop our addition skills through making and counting out collections of numbers.

It has been a very busy week in Primary 1B and we are ready for a break at the weekend. Please remember to bring in reading books everyday and a gentle reminder that as a health promoting school children will only be allowed to drink water in class.

Have a fabulous weekend.
